AFAIK Only these aircraft can fly RNP into NZQN (I spent about a week and a half flying around NZQN with JK at the Wakatipu Aero Club, so I know the area a little bit)Qantas 737-800Air NZ A320Air NZ 737-300 (I think)I think the Jetstar A320s doesn't have approval to fly RNAV into NZQN yet, and neither can the Mt Cook ATRs. I think they had to fly the VOR approach and join the figure 8 circuit visually or hold at AFTON, with far higher met minimas. When I was at Queenstown I saw an Aussie RAAF C-17 doing practice circuits, which I find a bit odd. Also there's a lot of mountain wave turbulence around the area (I was told when forecast is 100+ kts at 10000ft on the Clyde ARFOR) so aircraft may still divert even if the sky is relatively clear. Here are 2 videos: (I used the 'media' tag, with the full youtube link in case you're wondering)

That probably explains why when I last flew out of Queenstown a Jetstar A320 had to hold due to low visibility (as reported over the airport PA) but the Qantas 738 that was to fly me home to Sydney was able to get in OK.What I have trouble with is the final turn to line up with rwy 23. I find that the autopilot tends to take too wide an arc and you are not lined up correctly. I have flown this in real life and well remember this last turn as I was on the LHS and couldn't see the runway and it seemed to come very late in the approach. Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread.Bruce

Jeff,I was able to access the file at avsim 20 hours ago, so the screen shots I posted were with thet new approaches. If you ever need to find a file that has been recently uploaded, go to "Whats New" and you get what you want before customs clearence as John put it.

+1 Great job guys.
Thanks and nice pics. Take a look at the readme, it will give you some tips on flying. I noticed you flew the RNAV-Z to runway 23, but you did not use IAN. You will get tighter approach tracking inbound from BUNGY if you follow the instructions on the readme. Yo set the final approach course to 234 and then engage APP approaching BUNGY. You will then fly final approach in FAC/GP modes and it will take you pretty much down to the threshold like an ILS.Take a look at the screenshots included in the upload and you will see what I mean.

That is becasue the autopilot can not handle the tight turn so close in. The RNAV 23 approach's missed approach point is actually over the south tip of lake Hayes. So if you don't see the runway by then you need to go missed. If you see it, then you disengage and fly manually down to the runway. I put a section in the readme talking about this, and you should also download the charts from AIP NZ, they give a great pictorial of what is supposed to happen.Try the RNAV-Z 23 if you want autopilot guidance right down to short final, or the RNAV 05 and RNAV-Z 05, which also use IAN for guidance close in.

Awesome work, guys. I've been up to my armpits in work, and haven't had time to revisit this. Seeing the fruits of all this hard work has caused me to rush over to Orbx and buy the South Island scenery. The d/l will take 3 hours tho..I'll be flying to Queenstown for real in August, and can't wait to have another crack with the ngx.

Thanks for the advice Mariano. I an going to to a bit more practice tonight. I noticed my speed got away on me coming over the Lindis pass, but time I got to Cromwell i managed to bleed quite a bit of airspeed off, and have the aircraft configured (wrongly :) before turning to base. I was so awed by it, I lost focus on the flying. many thanks.

By the way, all the procedures where designed and tested with the 737-800. I did 99% of my testing with that aircraft, so I would be interested in hearing experiences with other types like the 700 and 600. Eventually I will get around flying it with those myself when I get a spare minute. The logic being that if an 800 can make the radius so could something a smaller.I did try a couple departures and one approach in the 900W, and it seemed to not handle them any different to the 800.

Awesome work, MarianoI'm only flying the 700 in. I find the 800 quite hard to slow down, especially if I'm heavy and coming down from on high. NZSI is actually quite small, isn't it! By the time you're in cruise you're almost at T/D. I've not yet let VNAV/RNAV take me all the way in yet; I always take control on the last or penultimate WP for short final. It's more fun that way, and as Bruce says, if you don't hit it just right and on speed, you end up slightly off-course..The 700 is so easy to fly, though that you're much better off letting the RNAV WP's vector you in near and then flying the remaining WP's to short final and off you go..I took a flight from NZCH last night, was planning on a 05 approach; had to sleep; put FSX on pause. Got home from work today and AS2012 has obv loaded "todays" weather. Today's weather is blowing the other way (of course it is; NZ is like the UK in that respect lol) and neccesitated a 23 approach. I was already on descent by this time, and your WP's vectored me from the WP I was just past (just past KALDI, I think) in through the hills, a way I've never been before. Wow. I just seem to fly around NZSI now; it's so beautiful. Might move there :)As I said earlier I'll post some short vids of the approaches. You're not allowed to make nasty jokes about my landing "style" :( Just have to get round to converting them..Top work. Well done. im%20Not%20Worthy.gif

Try http://www.austscene.com for updated procedures for Australia and NZ.
Yeah, could not find any RNP/RNAV procedures for NZQN in this link.

completed the approach RNAV on 05 into Queenstown from Wellington absolutely phenomanel. Your great work on coding/writing these procedures demonstrates & utilises the 2 best products available: NGX & ORBX. Anyone who hasnt tried this should definately give it a go - flying down the winding valley cliffs either side down to the spiral descending approach through low visibilty is amazing.Appreciate the effort there great approaches.

Enjoy flying in and out of NZQN in your NGX in crappy weather with RNP accuracy. :(
Hi Mariano, Thanks A Million for all the work you did on these approaches ! Just downloaded them after having been away for work all week and can't wait to try them out :( .

Cheers,
Emile Bax.
