Firstly you presume too much in your own definition of what is a "satisfying experience" and secondly there are already a couple of viable alternatives in the market, ripe for further development, don't count them out.Now back to my FsX flight.
I define "more satisfying" as something that will satisfy when you are bored with the stuff you are doing now. That generally means more challenging to me.As for the other "alternatives", I do not see them viable as they are certainly ripe for further development, given the track record of one and no track record of the other, I am not overly optimistic about the future of this hobby.

...having actually looked at the folders and files, there's really nothing in common with FSX or any other previous version. Yeah, there's an ..SimObjects/Airplane folder, but what's in that folder? One tiny 25kb file named "Airplane.dll" is all...What's this? There's not even a Scenery folder or any Texture folders either!
Bill,Out of curiosity I have two questions. Does the game run offline or did you have to be connected to the net even just for free flight? And how big is the total install relative to the original FSX demo?

Flight has nothing of the cartoonish look that FSX had when first introduced. Granted it's Hawaii only right now, but understand the reasoning. For you 'real sim pilots', I do understand the disappointment, but really, all the drama over a flight sim? I wonder if a few of us should really get out more. FSX combined with FTX (or P3D) will see us well into the future. I know that I am certainly going to continue to enjoy it.

I expect they will add ATC, AI, add-on scenery and aircraft pretty soon, and I look forward to that.
I actually wonder if they will ever add ATC and AI, though that is why I mentioned that FSX won't be coming off my hard drive. I would restrict Flight purely to VFR at uncontrolled aerodromes. It sounds to me like there would have to be fundamental changes to include the ATC and AI. Suddenly you'd have to make heaps of changes to the existing product - for example, you can only start on a runway or mid air, so that stuffs up the inclusion of both ATC and AI to begin with. I think they purpsely stripped all that out because it was likely considered too much of a performance drain and not a priority for beginners or casual users. Even I barely made use of those features in FS2004 and FSX except for the 10% of my time flying IFR.

The rest of us will be left behind with FSX and we'll use it as long as we can, but at some point we'll likely have to give up our hobby for lack of hardware and/or software support - unless we are prepar3d to spend $ or lower our XPectations in a flight sim.
I would not be so fearful. Someone always seems to fill the gap. And FSX still has a huge amount of life in it: given the reaction to Flight, if anything that reaction has cemented FSX's longivity even further. Didn't ORBX say they expected to be developing products for FSX for at least another decade? And hardware in 10 years time will almost certainly still be compatible. I reckon in 10 years time, there will be other serious simming options a plenty.

Just an FYI that ACES wanted to remove ATC for FSX so don't look for ATC in Flight.

ATC adds to the atmosphere, even though it is minimal. Hearing real communication with the AI planes gives some situational awareness as to what is going on. It is also nice to hear when you just want to watch the AI traffic at your favorite airport.FSX would certainly be much less fun for me without AI planes or ATC.

+1I already posted a few times that I know someone who is a die hard simmer and a Flight beta tester and he is highly annoyed by all the crap that's posted on the internet. He says everything to MAKE it a sim is there in Flight. The flight dynamics, wind, detail, sounds, it's all one notch above FSX and above all it's stable and performs well. And this is about a BETA! He says you would be nuts to NOT give Flight a try BESIDES running FSX on your pc. He does also say that it does depend on the dlc if this one is going to be a winner. In short: talking about Flight without actually having flown in it, is useless. But it's fun too. :( (BTW It's useless for those who are positive about Flight as those who are negative...!)
This is quite true. Now, I'm just speculating, of course. :( :(

This is my exact view on Flight. Seriously, do you have some sort of telepathic ability or something? :((:

*btw, when using the term 'game' it is an umbrella term, it also includes simulation and racing games, and everything in-between. Do not twist my words.

"A video game is an electronic form of play that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device" - the definition of the word "videogame", game is the common shorthand for videogame. Just being clear.

Well if he thinks that this thing is one notch above FSX he must have a very wild sense of imagination.Wind...............what wind. (Blazing Saddles type wind maybe.)Detail..............very basic.Flight Dynamics...................you gotta be kiddin me !!A childs toy....................definitely.Fred.

So, you have flown in FLIGHT have you Fred? Why don't you tell the rest of us all about it who are curious, but perhaps haven't been so lucky to find out and be disappointed for ourselves. Are there any really difficult advanced landing challenges between rows of trees in narrow fields while being knocked about in a severe wind storm and low visibility with scudding clouds and heavy mist or anything like that? Probably not, since it is definitely just a child's toy. Just wondering and hope you can tell us.

Folks keep making that statement, but......having actually looked at the folders and files, there's really nothing in common with FSX or any other previous version. So all the things one would wish to add to/tweak are in centralized encrypted files? the Airplanes .dll seems to be there so the game can find and 'read' the aircraft from their encrypted source file, Scenery and Textures I guess were easier to be read straight from their encrypted sources. One could hypothesize that if you went out of your way to DRM FSX, it'd look like this.Personally, the comparisons to FSX are meant to be deragatory and emphasize Flight's shortcommings in terms of aircraft simulation we are familiar with.

Seconded, it's a bit surpising to learn that ACES considered removing that, if anything it should've been expanded to accept voice recognition. Instead of clicking my responses on the menu, I could actually "commicate" with the ATC for more indepth immersion.

If the graphics run smoothly, look nice (they appear very nice), include helicopters with realistic flight models, on line multi-pilot (not player, we sim, not play). Stable, bug free, I'm in. So far, from the leaked Ytube beta it looks great. I care less about collecting tokens, but did enjoy the graphics Ytube displayed. A good aircraft with excellent flight model is all I want. Key word, realism. What one wants is as much realism mirroring the world of flying. The initial reactions of Flight are not good, not everyone liked the Beetles when they were seen for the first time also. Flight's first impression is tarnished by tokens and a woman backseat driver yapping as to do this and that. Good training for single guys as what to expect after marriage. Not so great for the guy who can land a tubeliner in the dead of night, rough weather, foggy landing ILS approach. So, kiddie tokens and a blabbing female know it all, sounds like fun... not! Lame as a first impression for the hardcore types. Like a guy dressed in a pink suit walking into a biker bar and asking for a big cold glass of yummy milk. We got to get past that, get the sim and review it in an honest way. Stop watching the guy dressed in pink drinking milk. Flight here, is like that guy walking into the biker bar. We are the bikers. Hard to review something by watching a unauthorized Ytube video. The guy in pink may be an ex marine going to a costume party, drinking milk to help his guts due to PTS. As a side point, most biker types after 1945 were pilot war hero's that enjoyed motorcycles. Pilots are very passionate in what they do. Hardcore. That explains a lot in these posts. Outlaw biker pilots do not like sissy flight sims. The problem is, reviewing prior to flying it. If Flight is about collecting tokens, I am OUT... and then some. Time will tell.

Considering the level of realism achieved by the default ATC I wouldn't find it surprising if ACES considered that it would take too much effort to code a realistic ATC system (considering they had an entire simulator to build) and that no ATC would be better than vector-you-into-mountains-ATC.In one of the leaked Flight videos at the airport selection screen it shows a list of ATC com frequencies. Whether that means Flight does have a (dormant) ATC system, or at least the base for one I don't know, but presumably it's not just cosmetics.
