REX water frame rate loss fix

Featured Replies

In case it's of any interest to anybody...A while ago I mentioned an issue I had with the NGX and all of my add-ons actually, where i would have high frame rate till I flew over REX water. As I did so, the frame rate would plummet, a loss of 50%.No problem at an AA setting of 8XS, but very apparent at 8XSQ.I manged to fix the issue as follows...In Nvidia Inspector, set anisotropic filtering to application controlled, rather than the recommended setting in the PMDG general forum. Anisotropic should be ticked on of course in FSX,No frame rate loss at all now over REX water at 8XSQ.

How are the ground textures looking? My AF set to override and 16x clears up blurries in the distance and shows negligible impact on frames.

This has to do with the size of the REX wave animation textures - certain ones do it and certain ones don't. I've found that the AA setting has a much bigger effect on it because AA has to scale those already huge textures up to do its work on them - it overloads the memory on the card and you get stuttering.

In REX Essential we're giving you the option to select a different compression algorithm which, in beta testing, is yielding VERY smooth results in comparison to our past version.

To solve it, if you have the time you must get DXTBmp, which is a program converting The animations (In the texture folder[OceanHeightFiles])into DXT5 format, and the frame rate loss is gone.

Very nice information, thanks for the heads up ;)

Hey Tim.How's it coming along. Are you almost there now? Sorry Just can't wait to see how Essentials is going to look.Regards,

What GPU are you running?

Thanks Tim! I love seeing all of the advanced developers finding new innovate ways to make the experience for the end user more enjoyable! :(

Wow, thanks for the tip!! Works with AS2012 also, no stutters and a very smooth flight.... :(

Looks fine to me Zach, I didn't have any issues with blurries before or after. I was seeing a very large decrease in frame rate, pretty much half over REX water. No loss at all now.

That was the case before I switched to application controlled AF, 8XSQ cut the frame rate in half over water, 8XS was fine though. Now, with AF set to application controlled I can use 8XSQ, there's no loss of frame rate at all. I didn't have any issues with stuttering, it was just the loss of frame rate.@TimThe option of a different compression algorithm is great news. And I was happy to read on the REX forum, that you have made great strides in terms of countering the sudden wind shift issue.@BenorgI'm using an EVGA GTX580
