Computer Case - recommendations, for and against?

Featured Replies

Slowly will begin to assemble a new PC.Need to begin with the case. I guess I will need 5 hard drives and a DVD drive. One or two USBs on the front, 1 audio on the front. Size does not matter - the larger the better. I have no desire to sit and look at LEDs in the case, interior lighting is a waste for me. I already have a 700w power supply. Cooling and cabling would be the prime areas of interest.
nudata, did you decide on a case yet? I got my Antec P183 V3 case in and it looks sweet on the inside and out, but more important, the cable routing and separate compartment for the PSU makes the heat management simpler and quieter. There is a great review of this case at SPCR. I cut the metal fan hub 'Star' out with a large pair of dikes and that will eliminate airflow impedance and the noise described in the review. I also installed two Antec TrueQuiet 120 fans in the front two lower bays to pull in fresh cooler air for the PSU and the upper chamber. I plan to mount any HDD's in the lower chamber and cool them with the same air that gets to the PSU.

I hope he didn't get a HAF, because I completely bashed them.

The HAF 932 has three giant 230mm fans that are really quiet, a really nice removeable tray system for the hard drives and/or SSDs, and a unique and easy to use toolless quick-lock for the drive bays in front. You can mount the PSU on the bottom or on top. The case is big--large enough to not have to sweat whether pretty much any large CPU heatsink will fit. I have two of them--not so much for their looks (they're back behind things anyway), but for the exceptional and quiet airflow.

Since looks are completely subjective, I was really trying hard to keep my negative opinion of HAF cases to myself, but now that you brought it up I'll start pouring the haterade! They're UGLY, they're tacky, and they look like some sort of transformer I should have owned at the age of 14.
517ll.jpgI resemble that remark! :yahoo: Kind regards,

Stephen my man, either loose the glasses or loose the tie/suit. But not both B)The combo + the pic of your system is just... for the lack of the better wording... mega-nerdy. :wink:In the end... a matter of preference, that's for sure! But - to keep OT: did you ever think about going watercooling? I have these boxes in which I put my HDDs, and they are kept mega-silent. I have 4, yet very little noise coming from drives.http://www.aquatuning.at/product_info.php/info/p3876_Watercool-Silentstar-HD-Quad-Rev-2.html

Corsair 650D here....and I like the suit and glasses Stephen!

Ha! I was hoping you'd be lurking in here for Corey's remarks... There's a reason I stifled my comments... For what it's worth, your system is clean and looks real nice.

LOLOLOL! :LMAO: Yup, I watched for an hour but he was not sufficiently provoked!

To be honest, I'm not too big on the HAF's looks either. But then again I'm really ugly, so I'm one of those loosers who think that beauty is on the inside

What do you think about Lian Li? I somehow LOVE their simplistic look... I'm quite tired of those "looks" also. Lately I'm only thinking simplicity and sleekness. The big plus of such closed cases, I can put noise-maps into the computer, to make it even more silent, get a separate silencer box for my waterpump, my HDDs are in boxes anyway, and get even more silent. Nothing nicer than a quite room while PC is uber-performing!

Stephen my man...
Rats! I thought you wouldn't recognize me. Shouldn't moderators have an incognito mode when we hide our names and can put on disguises and sneak around? Big%20Grin.gif

The Corsair 800D is a perfect case then!

It has a window! Also those "slots" in the front. This is what I call a great looking case (what I like nowdays):http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=338&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=61

I am not impressed with this case 'thermal efficiency' Two larger fans pulling in cooling air with only two smaller fans pushing out heated air still spells 'positive pressure' inside the case causing stagnating hot air lurking inside. Ideally you want a negative airspace inside for efficient airflow management with no hot spots in corners. The addition of the PSU cannot be considered because its' fan, if and when it is operating needs to be managing its' own heat issues. If the the two 120mm fans have to run at higher RPM to move the CFM from the front two 140mm fans then your having to use more energy and possibly higher noise levels as well to get that hot air out. An external liquid cooling system may be the only cure for this case for an efficient FSX OC system. IMHO of course...

I was of the understanding that positive pressure provides better cooling and minimizes dust buildup inside the case if you have filters on all the intake fans.
