Two of the best moments ever in a flight sim

Featured Replies

I just finished the RV landing missions number 4 and 5. Number 4 has absolutely gorgious graphics: it's dusk (or dawn, I didn't pay attention) and the mood and athmosphere is AWESOME! For a moment I was flying towards the sun and I could see scratches and stuff on the window! And the sun wasn't a round light, it was a faded sun!!! And the way the sun shone on the hills in the distance...!!! My goodness... AWESOME!!! Then I did landing mission 5, where you have to descend into and land in extremely dense fog. I have never performed a manual landing with a GA like this. First of all the fog looks awesome from above (you start flying above the fog in nice sunny conditions and the fog down there makes FSX fog look like total crap) and when you slowly enter it, you really enter a deep fog: you don't suddenly enter the fog, you slowly enter it: you see clouds of fog rushing by your window (or however you say that) and it gets thicker and thicker until you see nothing at all anymore. The fog is REAL!Having to fly all the way to the airport only by looking at gauges was thrilling and exciting and pretty scaring! At one moment I though I lost direction but then I suddenly saw very faint lights in the fog: runway lights leading me all the way to the runway! And I never ever expected to be so happy being rewarded by GOLD after landing, haha!!! ('Golden rewards' and 'sim' don't go together according to some, well, I don't give a ****! I LOVE IT!)It was bloody awesome!!!I am totally sold now. Really. Honestly. FSX is over for me when it comes to GA. Man, this is awesome.

I'm too scared to do the RV LM #5 again right now - getting a gold on that one is very impressive! I'm still trying to improve on #1-4 (I'm not sure I have even one gold yet) and #5 I've only landed without a death but that was the only precision involved in that one :).I too will not consider FSX for GA flying, it's that good.

I went back there to take some screenshots. For the best impression (and since this is not a screenshot forum) I will post them as links to the full screen ones. But before I do, you REALLY have to this all in motion. Bloody smooth motion, that is. And the fog shots look rather static, but believe me, when you fly there, you see fog moving at thigh speed over your plane (I don't know how to say that in good English, sorry) which looks awesome and nothing like I have EVER seen in FSX.RV Landing 4Looking into the sun (see those scratches!).http://www.swe-gaming.com/fsx/files/2012-03/021448_Sun 1.jpgThe sun on the hills. did none of the RV missions since I can't get the expansion pack to be installed but I agree that the fog is the best ever seen, so real. absolutely love it. though in the stearman I quickly hit ground, time to get some IFR capable aircraft.jeroen, any chance you can still edit the links to the pics, they are not working this way as the end it cut off.

Yes, I noticed that immediately after posting, sorry for that: it took some time to correct them, but it's done now.

Jeroen,Yes sir. It is as dramatic as dramatic can be. The first time I entered a fog layer like that I was sweating bullets. The next thing I knew I was skimming just above ghostly treetops. Nothing has come close in my experience to such a graphical representation of extreme danger...and FUN!Kind regards,

Flight has definitely hit the nail on the head with GA flying, no other Sim has this type of immersion factor! And the sounds with the graphics are awesome, gotta hook-up my Butt-Kicker!

I had a similar experience with the 1st short $100 Burger mission out of PHNL. The weather was on isolated thunderstorms, and I chose to fly in the Stearman. At takeoff, winds were pretty light, about 14 kts. The 12 mile flight went right over the mountains, and the winds gradually picked up as I got closer until the gusts were over 90 kts! The plane was almost uncontrollable at times, and needless to say, my passenger was unable to hold her breakfast down. Once the mountains were cleared, the winds died down again. It was a very fun and immersive experience.

Yeah, I almost pooped my pants yesterday going from the big island to Maui. All was beautiful till I got to the Maui coast when the rain started. Heading to Hana, I was impressed with the look of this rain shower. Then, I started entering a slight layer of fog and was very impressed, for about a minute. It got progressively thicker until I couldn't see a thing. I was in the Icon just near the airport at about 1300 feet. I was concentrating on keeping that altitude and with the minimum gauges in the A5, it was very hard. I drifted a little west and the fog broke slightly, enough to see the runway lights. Got her down, taxied to parking and just looked around at the scene, a crappy morning, overcast with fog and rain, and it looked so realistic and had me in the mindset of that weather at that airport at that moment. Well done!

Jeroen,You are so fickle. "No more GA flying in FSX" Come on, now. Can't you do both? I can. How about all those nice Orbx GA airports that you own that won't handle a 737? Going to waste?Ray

I could see scratches and stuff on the window!
Yes that blew a number of us away... to have the sun catch the window a certain way and reveal the "crazing". And how about that panel! RealAir or what! Little better imo... and I have bought everything RealAir sells.
It was bloody awesome!!!
See!! See!!! This is what some of us were saying... there more to this thing than initially meets the eye.So much negative here (like that nutty review in Flying) so many have become terribly jaded. One cannot spend an hour or two and think they've seen it all... the person that is shorted is themself. And if you love flying... here is a new experience... maybe you still spend 95% of you time in FS9/FSX... still something worthwhile here.Outstanding pics btw Jeroen.Btw wassup wit dat VOR No. 1 ? (last one... In the fog)

:LMAO:I think he's just terribly excited with this new discovery.

Thanks for the post Jeroen, reminded me of when I got the Hawaii DLC in the beta and did that same flight in the Vans, I have not done it yet in the release version but you got me thinking about it alot so will probably go disappear now and do it. :Nerd:

I have to break away for a few hours. The golf course is calling me. I haven't had time for all my outside interests since Flight came out. My wife even participated in a couple of Aerochaches last night. There might be hope for this 44 year marriage yet. Have fun guys. Remenber, there are rocks in them there clouds.Ray

LOL Guilty as charged. What Rob said: I'm just terribly excited. It's not that I uninstalled FSX and all my Orbx addons. Hm... not yet anyway, hehe...
J van E Very good post, and the pics are exellent.

Guys, if you want to add a couple more "best moments", try the backcourse ILS approach to Lanai PHNY or the Honolulu PHNL LDA 26L approach at dusk or night with severe weather settings.
