March 6, 201214 yr I think when it comes down to it, a hardcore simmer is someone who would rather die than lose their ability to play FS.No! No! No! No!!! That's not hardcore, that's hard up! Life is life, this is just play, but I am sure you were just using it as a figure of speech, right?Kind regards,
March 6, 201214 yr Playing is living, but don't limit playing to FS! The world and life has A LOT MORE to offer! :) Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
March 6, 201214 yr Zach, I should try that Crusader Kings 2 next...I would get sucked into that one too.Not to totally derail things here....I just bought Crusader Kings 2 a couple days ago and its pretty deep! It brings to life the bits of Medieval Total War II that are abstracted (the family relations/marrying/heirs/intrigue/lineage etc) and is pretty immersive. Actually I think it is the polar opposite of MTW2 as the battles are generally abstracted in favor of the Borgia-like scheming. Great stuff and probably the most accessible Paradox title yet (Hearts Of Iron was a chore lol). But if you feel the need to dive right down the rabbit hole....something insanely complex beyond belief (and still moderately easy to learn the mechanics of) would be Gary Grigsby's "War In The East" or John Tillers "Campaign Series" will utterly satisfy your inner grognard. Actually "Campaign Series" has been on my PC's ever since they were first published in 1997 (I think).Back to the flight simulator part of things.....I fly real weather/VATSIM-only/adhere to the published charts and stick to just a few aircraft that I take the time to get comfortable with. I felt pretty hardcore doing the transantlantic crossing in the B377 with no naviads for my recent review....or at least my tush did .But I would not go hanging labels.....as long as folks are enjoying what they do in this hobby and feel it is time well spent thats what is important.**edit**I also like to waterboard myself on the golf course....sigh....5 years left to get my handicap down from 18 in order to join the senior tour......yeah right :( AVSIM Staff ReviewerBush Is Good!

In fact, it makes you think about the true essence of simulation and what it means to each of us.That said, I like the freedom to move about in a 3D plausible world, at a pace controlled by me. Sometimes I don't want to fly (or destroy anything) but rather just observe the surroundings. A hardcore simmer truely enjoys escapism (different place, time period, role, etc.). A hardcore simmer will buy add-ons that provide more fidelity and realism, even if his or her spousal unit begs to differ! :( Hardcore simmers are dreamers in the best sense.
March 6, 201214 yr Not sure this is a characteristic of a "hardcore simmer", but...Have you ever dozed off holding the yoke? :(Lol! YES! I have! I was still "high" from my wisdom teeth extraction, but I fell asleep flying the Level-D 767 and woke up 2 hours later slumped over in my chair. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules

March 6, 201214 yr Hardcore = an attempt to keep it as realistic as possible. That's my take. Not hardcore = flying around for fun without regard to the real world limitaitons/restrictions/considerations.Regards,GeorgeI've always had the same definition in mind. But given the various answers, I looked up in a dictionary for hardcore and it says; " refers to the members of a group who are the most commited to its activities". So I was wrong. It seems that you can be a hardcore simmer and fly any old how, without flying by the book in any way!!! I guess we have to find another word for those who fly as much realistically as possible :( . Nothing like that one you posted. I don't think that disqualifies me from being called a "hardcore simmer".I don't think the hardware determins your "hardcoreness" either. I've got a single 17 inch monitor and an X52, not exactly a "simpit" but I can still read metars and file correct flightplans and handle ATC on VATSIM/IVAO and fly complex stuff like the NGX, Aerosoft Katana, Flight1 Mustang "properly" using charts, navaids, SID/STARs, reading METARS, NOTAMS, complying with restrictions and communicating properly, setting up the aircraft etc.I've only ever had a couple of real life flight lessons, but they're between $300 and $400 an hour up here in Norway, so a PPL is a very financially unachievable dream for most "hardcore simmers" up here. Don't think that's made me approach my simulator that differently, although I fly more GA now after having done that a little bit in RL.I prefer the term "Flightsim geek" over "hardcore simmer" though, let's be honest here. :(
