Antivirus / Internet Security - what is being used?

Featured Replies

Srdan,In my previous post , above, I failed to mention that I only use the NOD32 AV ver. 4, not their complete security package. I also use the MS provided firewall and occasionally run SpyBot just to double check everything.Mel

I just use MSE. I have tried about 10 different ones and MSE is the simplest, smallest and most efficient of 'em all.

Paid: NOD32 (I love it, plain and simple. Great UI)Free: Microsoft Security Essentials (Free, and from Microsoft, so you can trust it) and Avast (Free, and from a reputable brand. I have yet to try the new version 7... I can't wait to do so!)Currently Using: MSE

ESET NOD 32. It has found suspicious things in the past....and has NEVER let anything in! For the price, it's the best I have ever used.Stan

For my FlightsimPC I have chosen MSE because it is light and not very intrusive. The PC is behind a router and hardly used for browsing the internet. In that situation I think MSE gives sufficient protection. On PC's that are used for accessing the internet, browsing, social media etc. you might need better protection like Kapersky although MSE is still not bad. There isn't a virus-scanner that will give 100% protection and you can't rely on them completely. Putting all your PC's behind a router helps a lot, make sure you have the latest updates for your software, particularly adobe products, Java and Windows, and take care what websites you visit. Unfortunately one will never be completely safe though.Allard.

If you use your computer for FS and light web surfing, then MSSE is fine. But if you have to do any real web work, it doesn't seem to work very well. You don't have to go to questionable sites to catch something. I got something once on a site looking for ukulelee parts, for crying out loud. Plus I've seen MSSE say it got rid of something, and on rescan it is still there.Consider the free AVAST. The new version has a rootkit scanner. Most free AV do not have this feature. Many of the newer viruses go for the boot files now.

i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.

One of the reasons I stopped using Avast! was that it kept finding false positives that turned out to be system files, which is maybe not a problem when you know, or can check, that the flagged-up file is safe, but is a problem if you can't. Finally I got tired of dealing with these and gave up on the application. I had used it for a couple of years with no issues, but the latest version was the one that gave the most problems.http://hothardware.c...eam-as-a-virus/

Bobbyjack, exactly! My gf wad looking for pictures of barbapapas, and clicked on the site www.barbapapa.fr, clicked on the PIC in the google pics, and my computer got infected.I couldn't believe, so I deleted it and tried myself, just to get infected again! It beats me how it happened.Do you think that the fact that I'm running as Administrator and I have user control turned off, this could have caused it?I now have MSE installed, but I am using my pc for way more than FSX.Also for some online banking (as usual), surfing avsim etc.I do not visit any suspicious sites, but as you can see from the example up there, it happened over a picture...I seriously doubt that MSE would be enough.Since I have a free 1 year license at home, I might just give it a whirl.Damnit... I really hate av programs.

KostaAs I understand it, one of the shortcomings(?) of XP was that it automatically set up users as Administrators. If someone hacked into your computer, they had access to everything. Enter Vista where your primary account was a normal user account. If someone hacked into your account, your data was safe. They couldn't change anything. But, as we found out, we couldn't change anything in FS either. While UAC may protect our data, It does nothing to protect us from viruses. Why, because a virus doesn't usually go for data. It goes for the registry, or the boot system, or Windows files. Folks who know little about how to take care of their computers need UAC. Others do not.I,too, hate AV software. I would like to see those who push viruses on us hung up by their toe nails.

I wanted to say something else, but this is family forum, so I will not.

Hello,I would like to know what are simmers nowdays using. And if you feel kind, please say why. I'm looking at what to get.
Hello !My operating system is Ubuntu GNU/Linux. It's a great distribution for X-Plane, FlightGear, and also for most Wine compatible flight simulators. For the price, it's the best I have ever used, and I never had a security problem.https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/FeaturesHappy flying ! :(
