March 27, 201214 yr Hello,I would like to know what are simmers nowdays using. And if you feel kind, please say why. I'm looking at what to get.
March 27, 201214 yr Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, it works, it's light on the system, its the best... really! I was quite surprised when I found out about MSE: I never expected such a good product to come from MS for free. I've had various AV-products, from absolutely crap (Norton: stay away from Norton, PLEASE don't touch it, BEWARE, DANGER) to NOD32 (great one, but... not free... :( ), but I've been completely happy with MSE. I don't notice it's there at all until I get a warning about a virus. Highly recommended, also more and more by other flight simmers because it's so light on resources and never gets in the way. Did I mention already it's free?P.S. There are other free scanners and I've used a few of them too in the past, but they had weird udate systems or looked awful or were complicated to use or limited... Just get MSE, I'd say. :(
March 27, 201214 yr Also Microsoft Security Essentials.....Jeroen pretty much says it all. When I buy a Honda I don't take it to Ford to get it fixed......Therefore Microsoft is the best to secure Windows, it is a free service, and they know Windows better then anyone.Cheers Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
March 27, 201214 yr Hello Srdan,I use NOD32 by ESET. Although it is not free it is 50% less expensive than Symantic as an example. It is good as far as not being a resource drain. What I like best is that it is excellent at keeping the nasty stuff out unlike many other AV products that seem to allow a virus / malware in just to boast for finding it before offering to remove it. It is self updating, no nags or interuptions to update. It is effective enough that I have found that running a full system scan (which is left to the user to decide when and so forth) is practically a waste of time. MS Security Essentials would be my second choice. My wife uses that on her lap top PC and it seems to do the job for her pretty well. On her Tower PC which sets next to mine ( to aide quality time - sort of - ) she noticed I was never nagged about updating or full scans and liked what she saw well enough to have me help her install NOD32. No, I am not in any way connected to ESET, I'm just pleased with their product. I hope this helps some.Regards,Mel
March 27, 201214 yr Microsoft Security Essentials also. I followed recommendations of numerous simmers from another thread (I guess somewhere in late 2011).I used Avast! and AVG before. They were very nice but I had an impression they were interfering with my FS sessions. The only doubt I still have is how to turn my MSE off completely just for the simming session (not disabling in from the startup lists).Plus I would like to update it only manually. But anytime I want to do it, the definitions are already current.
March 27, 201214 yr MSE in four computers...Very happy with it... C172P N97674 PPL SEL Complex High Performance
March 27, 201214 yr MSE, yes... yesterday got something, adspy/something. I rared it, cleaned the system manually (no idea really how I got it, must been through simple surfing) and then I installed MSE, unrared file to see what is it, MSE didn't say a thing. Sent it to a friend of mine with Kaspersky, K. resported that it's ADSpy... of some kind. The fact is, it was starting itself, it edited registry to start itself (but wasn't a resident), it was causing problems on my computer AND MSE said all is OK.But, I appreciate your opinions. If you didn't go MSE... what would the 2nd choice be? ESET? Kaspersky? Those are two top products that I'm considering.
March 27, 201214 yr MSSE here too, never had a problem, dont even notice its running, its free and updated everyday.Exclude FSX file from it and you're laughing! Chris Howard
March 27, 201214 yr I've been running Kaspersky on my PC and notebooks for several years now. I am still happy with it. The only inconvenience I am aware of is I occasionally have to suspend it in order to install certain upgrades, if they do not have fully recognized certificates. I figure that is a good thing ;-) Always remember to Find Your FUN! -Bob
March 27, 201214 yr MSE here as well. Light weight, non-intrusive, very effective and meshes with Windows well. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
March 27, 201214 yr I switched from Avast! (free) to MSE (also free) a few months ago, and have no regrets. As others have noted, it isn't a system hog.
March 27, 201214 yr I use sandboxie. "Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer". You basically surf the net and when you're done you close your browsers and all the files you collected during your surfing session get deleted right away.Included spyware, malware and all that. I also use malware bytes and superantispyware to check for spyware, malware that could have possibly gotten out of the sandbox. Good stuff.check it out: www.sandboxie.com
March 27, 201214 yr I dropped Norton a couple of years ago and went to NOD32 by ESET based on recommendations in the FS community. NOD32 may be lighter on the system but I had some RXP problems because of it that I eventually got straightened out. I think NOD is almost as intrusive as Norton. Rather than renewing my NOD32, I deleted it and went with MSE and Windows Firewall about 6 months ago. I'm very happy with it and have had no problems so far. I like that it is updated with the regular MS Windows updates. Joe Brown
March 27, 201214 yr AVG Free edition for me. I've been running it on all our home systems for years. It doesn't bog me down, and I've had nothing get through since I've started using it. (Disclaimer: I don't spend a lot of time on sketchy web sites.) I've seen it trap both dangerous links and viral attachments to incoming e-mails, so I know it's there.
