Don't get this

The bottom line is fellas, if someone produces something that is crap and it's legal, and people buy it, then more fool them. I think if you look around some of the online stores there are a host of 'crap' products, but they are continuing to be sold, presumably 'cos guys are buying them!

Yes. but it seemed as though AVSIM was promoting their product. Hey it isnt my website I have no say in what they do, but I feel it reflects negatively on AVSIM if people feel that they are promoting shovelware like this.

Sure, I hear what you are saying and agree with your sentiments, but at the end of the day, one man's meat is another man's poison, as the saying goes.

LOL Didn't see all this coming. It's perfectly fine with me that Avsim posted this news. After all, it IS news, also because no one really expected addons for Flight. And btw news doesn't always have to be good... I didn't look at the announcement as a promotion, I have to say. Don't even know if it IS a promotion? But even if it was, it's fine with me. We are wise enough to see if something is worth buying and just in case someone didn't read things well enough or is NOT wise enough, we can always fall back on information and tips and advice on this forum... and THAT is why I posted what I did: to express my surprise about such an addon and to tell people that imho (!) it's a waste of money. That's it and that's all...

Avsim sure enough can use the money from advertising: I am sure there are products on banners that aren't exactly what Avsim themselves would buy or commend, but that's logical. And the same goes for the news, although I don't know how that works (if people pay for that or not). I work for a weekly magazine and if we only allowed the ads we like ourselves, I would be out of a job right now.

If you don't like some 'news' and think Avsim shouldn't advertise too much, hit the Donate button on this forum a bit more often, I'd say.

I'm a bit confused here..maybe I'm missing something..Why shouldn't AVSIM promote their "product"?

If you buy it, then that's up to you. As Howard says, the shops are FULL of crap. Online stores are full of crap. Why? Becuase the stupids buy it! It's called market economics..it's how shopping works..when studff doesn't sell, it gets canned. When it does, they make more.

Cue another cockpitless plane....

So, you interpret that everything that appears on the AVSIM Front Page is "promotional", is that right?

Informing people that it is available is not promoting it, it is publicising it, and there is a difference; we are free to make a choice as to whether or not to buy it.

Sorry, I didn't mean "promote" their product in that way (although that's fine too; it's called advertising ) and I know that wasn't directed at me, but just clearing that semantic slip-up up so to speak...

Perhaps more to the point, like the FS Widgets EFB add on for Flight, the fact that another add-on for Flight is available is in fact very newsworthy in light of the many discussions there have been about third party involvement. Personally, I would have been disappointed if Avsim had not reported it, as I regard Avsim as one of, if not the premier source for flight sim news.

Do it, now!

Well, while I was typing my post, I already figured out I should do it and so I did it immediately after posting my post.

The thing with ANY product put up for sale: You, Joe Public, have the right to read about what it does, and doesn't do, and then make a decision to either buy it, or not buy it. Personally, I don't think I'll be buying that product. "Flight" is easy enough to use where I do not have a reason to be pulled along by the hand to do things. I'm an experienced simmer. The product may be useful to others, though. They may buy it, and they may like it. And, as soon as that happens, I would be hard pressed to diss it in a public forum. So in advance of that, I will not diss it at all.

Big shrug from me. I just hope that no unsuspecting noob buys this and feels robbed later.

It also points up a valid reason why MS may feel the need for tight controls of flight releases for now. A flood of quickly knocked off items and a possible follow-on flood of angry customers could easily hurt this flegling brand.

i'm not going to buy this...but i don't think its a rip off in the slightest....i mean, they probably spent a lot of time trying to load weather stuff over and over and i can see it now "trapped above the clouds"...some mission where you descend through a storm in a little icon and have to land with 40kt crosswinds...that'd be fun, and i sure as hell don't wanna fly around to 50 airports to make the best experience. but thats just me.

I might buy it, just for the approach plates and landing setups, why not, its almost free.

Why don't you just get them from Flightaware they have them all!!

Thanks

@ Frank: you have SWOTL saves? I'll give you $500 monopoly for them (I loved that game)

Yea, wasn't SWOTL fun back in the day? I tried it again, recently, in "dosbox" (or might have been Amiga Forever) and quickly understood why I can never go back to playing those old sims on a regular basis again. But, they were fun during their time.

How exactly are you supposed to do ILS approaches when the guages dont work?
