The aerocache phenomenon

Featured Replies

One odd thing though: I have done two aerocaches of the day and I have NOT done two that came with the game. But the game says I have 53 out of 53 aerocaches...! Not that this matter to me (I am not in it for the awards and getting everything done) but it's a bit odd.

BTW I just did the one of today (Listening carefully or something like that) but after flying around for some time and never getting close and flying up and down the island all the time I used the map again to find the aerocache. I have no patience for things like this... Still, it's a nice thing to have in the game.

In the opening sequence of the 1970's TV show Hawaii 5 O, and I think it is in the current show too. There is a shot of a monument that I had no idea what it was. Until I did the aerocache for it.

"Listening carefully" was about the easyest one to find yet, found it in under one min.

I just happened to have parked my plane about 100' from where the next day's aerocache was going to spawn once. I never even had to start the engine for that one.

I love the caches. Each one is a new VFR landmark to use on my fairweather cargo and charter jobs. :Nerd:

Thanks for the replies but I have to say I'm a little disappointed that everyone here seems to relish the gamy side of Flight.

People buying planes that lack cockpits and lapping up aerocache updates could have an effect on the direction Flight goes.

I really would like it to head the other way.

Except that there's nothing gamey about aerocaches.

If you were to visit Cairo on an around-the-world flight, would you fly by the Pyramids? Well, that's a good place for an aerocache. If that seems like a silly comparison, I had to backtrack on one flight to see the Taj Mahal because I didn't realize it was nearby when I was first in that area. Same with Mt. Everest.

Hawaii is a little short on pyramids, but there are plenty of local attractions you might want to visit if you knew about them. Aerocaches are a way of letting you know.

You don't have to use the aerocache hunt feature. I've only used it to get a few aerocaches. Usually I have the point of interest turned off so there's no marker, just the spinning A icon.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Enjoying the Aerocaches will not have any effect at all on Flight's future direction. Microsoft Game Studios has spent the last few years doing multiple market studies, focus groups, and comprehensive surveys. They decided long ago on the future direction of Flight, and that includes structure and motivation integrated into the game. Aerocaches are nothing more than that, a way to focus flying on an aspect that MGS found to be important and enjoyable by their target market.

So, people can boycott the Aerocaches and the planes without cockpits as much as they like, and that will not in any way alter the plans for Flight's development. And anyway there is nothing wrong with sightseeing, and many of us did just that in FS X, FS 9, 8, 7, 6 .... :Peace:

Best regards.

How are Aerocaches "gamy"? If MS had simply named them Landmarks would you still call finding them a game?

Hunting VOR stations and runways is equally "gamy".

I'm not ashamed...

I freely, and enthusiastically, admit to loving the "gamey" aspects of Flight...

Thanks for the tip Ramon, re-starting does bring up the next aerocache. Unfortunately I slept in this morning and missed "Listening carefully" by by about 30 seconds

They're not exactly gamey, but their placement sure doesn't promote sensible flying.
