June 6, 201214 yr The power draw and resultant heat output are too high. It's like running an engine at redline, if you do it for extended periods of time the engine will produce lots of heat, so much that it will eventually wear down.
June 6, 201214 yr I've wondered this myself. The real deal may only be a few years off though.. research is hot in "quantum computers".... They don't have a word for how powerful they will be yet. We're talking pennies compared to billions... with "Terminator" not to far behind.
June 6, 201214 yr They don't have a word for how powerful they will be yet. From what I have gathered, a quantum computer is millions of times faster than a conventional desktop computer. We are talking about comparing a spec of sand to an entire beach. This would be incredible for Flight Sim though! :Big Grin: 60billion FPS at maxed settings.
June 6, 201214 yr This would be incredible for Flight Sim though! 60billion FPS at maxed settings. LOL!!! When I was watching something on their development, you know that was the FIRST thing I was thinking about!
June 6, 201214 yr QC Computers will change the world in ways even good old Moore couldn't have predicted. Really spooky stuff. Reminds me of that old Chinese proverb; "may you be born in interesting times".
June 6, 201214 yr More cores, yes; but when are we going to see 6,7, and so on, ghz cpu's?? Intel and Desktop computing has hit a wall? Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
June 6, 201214 yr Intel and Desktop computing has hit a wall? Nope, just that newer programs allow the use of more cores to really demonstrate their true power; things are faster, just done differently, GPU's are a big help in games that use them as well... Simon
June 6, 201214 yr Personally I think we hit the wall with Sandy Breeze, end of story, be satisfied, accept the stutters, glitches, flashes, etc. FSX aka "The Old Hog" will still be messing around in the pigsty, totally oblivious about more cores, Ghz, Mhz etc.! That´s our problem, oink.. :Pig:
June 6, 201214 yr Got the $$$ to play... 5.2GHz out of the box....are you ready to overclock it, don't chance it and buy a real plane....a big one. http://hothardware.c...nterprise-Chip/ http://www-03.ibm.co...prise/z196.html http://en.wikipedia....(microprocessor)
June 6, 201214 yr They've moved well beyond 5.2GHz now, Alain, but I digress, IBM's Power processors can't run FSX anyway so it's a moot point. Intel will keep releasing faster x86 CPUs, but single-threaded performance has about hit a brick wall as all the "low-hanging fruit" has already been picked. It's going to take something like "reverse hyper-threading" to deliver any more meaningful single-threaded performance.
June 6, 201214 yr I don't understand why IBM has not ventured into this space.... where Intel is dominating. Not sure what the entry barrier is for them. Hmmm.... Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
June 6, 201214 yr I don't understand why IBM has not ventured into this space.... where Intel is dominating. Not sure what the entry barrier is for them. Hmmm.... Manny Intel has the best microprocessor manufacturing technology in the world. By the time a competitor can come up with something better and get it to market, Intel is two or three generations on. See AMD for example.

Hummmmm.....with that kind of cache I'll try one on FSX just for giggles....., better, let send a copy of FSX to IBM and ask them if they would be nice enough to put their machine to the test with FSXMark11 using PCI-e 3.0 of course...
