Will adding 8GB RAM (from 4gb) Increase FS9 Performance?

Featured Replies

The reason why I didn't post this in Hardware Forum is simply to avoid unnecessary advices like "why sticking with fs9?" or "you should switch to this cpu and that GPU and this platform" and such instead of receiving direct answers to this matter.

I do hope fs9 simmers will get my point as I DON'T have any plans in the near future to migrate to "that processor" or to "that newer flight simulator platform".

Okay, here's my current system:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE

Nvidia 9800GT 1GB

G-Skill 4GB

500GB HDD

Windows 7 64 Ultimate

Will it be wise investing 8GB RAM? Again, my main sim is fs9. (otherwise, I just grab that tempting QW's 146)

Cheers

=====EDITED=====

I run fs9 perfectly most of the time, but I want a better fps when, for instance, on final @ AES-CDG with 100% WoAI, ASA's 10 layer clouds and all sliders fully right

Yes, Only if you have a 64bit OS. FS9 really shines in Windows 7 but you must make the FS9.exe 'large address aware' if you install memory over 4gigs (video card ram included).

Windows XP 32bit you might as well stick with 2gigs of ram including whats on the video card.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR

Yes,

One word that may save a lot of $$$. Gracias Dillon. And yes, I patched the exe with "4GB Patch" and I forgot to write what OS I am currently on.

I'll get back to you when things don't go as expected

Anyone else please?

"why sticking with fs9?"

So......... Why are you sticking with FS9? HA gotcha! And you thought you could get away from us by hiding up here? Just%20Kidding.gif

FSX is too unstable on any system, i'm more on fs9 and soon X-Plane 10 which will have 64bit support.

No. I you will not see any performance increase, FS9 is cpu bound app. It will run fine on 2 GB memory. However you will see a performace boost running Win 7 using 8 GB over 4 GB's. The 4 gig patch addresses only virtual memory that reduces the OOM erors that comes with FS9. It has nothing to do with physical on board memory.

Answering the topic..not quite. I upgraded mine from 4GB to 8GB (running 64bit win 7) and didn't notice any improvement. 4GB is more than enough for Fs9.

But anyway, I don't often "only" fly Fs9. I usually listening to music, surfing web, chatting while flying too. So 8GB is,however, safer!

Coltrane I wonder whether you are overclocking the Phenom II ?

Given that FS9 is CPU bound ANY increase in clock will help improve frames though not necessarily smoothness.

It goes without saying that anything you can do to get rid of irrelevant background tasks/processes will help to release more cycles/ram, particularly important as you, like myself, are running i Gb graphic cards..

I haven't tried it really, but I somewhat know how it will be on my system.

Yes the OOM was often there when flying above a dense area with major/minor roads, bridges, golf parks and industrial areas which to me look like a bowl of noodle from 5000ft.

no notice able improvements but safer. I'd say. That makes sense, no one is talking about adding a large amount of RAM when longing for performance improvements so I think I'll skip the RAM. Thanks

Hi.

No it is not overclocked. Frankly, I know nothing about overclocking. But I'm still figuring it out at what cycle my cpu can be oc-ed without installing a $200 cooler.

+1 on fs9/fsx being cpu bound. All the memory in the world won't help your processor render a 3d object any faster, and that is the primary performance demand.

Regards,

Mark

Yeah mate, I thought I could get 700 fps with $70 upgradeMoney%20Eyes.gif in 7 minutes

Have a nice weekend

without installing a $200 cooler.

A very well regarded and reviewed CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler can be had for under $A40. As for overclocking there is a wealth of advice on the web (Google is your friend) as well as the Hardware section here at Avsim. Overclocking is no longer a black art with modern cpu's and is reliable as long as you don't go to extremes as some hobbyists do.

Over and out!

Coltrane, mark has a good point, spending money on extra ram is not going to help you much and will make no difference in FS9

Why not find out what CPU your motherboard can take and get the fastest in that range? I bet you will find it cheaper to get a faster second hand CPU then buying more ram that won't increase FPS.

4 gig is more then enough for FS9. Only reason I have 8 gig is because it came with my motherboard.

Yea I just found a AM2 AM3 Mobo compatible Cooler costs $25. Yet still need a lot of learning about OCing

hello Rob. How's life?

Yes I am warned RAM will have little impact since im on 4GB already. Since you start migrating to FSX (thou I am sure you'll keep your fs9 since you're anticipating Airsimmer Advance), what second-hand CPU would you recommend? Cmiiw your previous cpu was E8600ish (?) that ran fs9 smoothly, I'm telling you, it's a RARE cpu on market. Even the used ones.

Ok this should be in Hardware Forum. I'm moving now

Cheers
