June 18, 201213 yr Hello Chaps, I've recently started using SIDS/STARS on the PMDG and find it very enjoyable and adds a another level of realism for the NGX For the moment I've concentrated on my home ground of EIDW and fly from EIDW (DUB) to EGGP (LPL) If anyone wants to venture into this, I've included the links for the charts below: EIDW (DUB) http://www.iaa.ie/safe_reg/iaip/aip_eidw_charts.htm EGGP (LPL) http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/index.php%3Foption=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=91&Itemid=140.html I've used addon airports for FSX but these are not required. Have Fun! Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry. June 18, 201213 yr im not sure im getting the point of thread. Just general enthusiasm I think. Nothing wrong with that, in fact it is nice to see, and it certainly makes a pleasant change from the dearth of 'will the 777 have realistically simulated flame-retardent foam in the cushions?' and 'why don't PMDG make a Junkers Ju-88?' type threads which normally clutter these forums. June 18, 201213 yr indeed nothing wrong with enthusiasm, just thought there is something more than than. :) Lj. Prodanovic

Have Fun! I love me some difficult SIDs and STARs. Speed and altitude restrictions galore! Love hand-flying the departures, but leave all of the arrival, except ILS/Final app., to the AP cause its better than me with speed management. Go to ead.eurocontrol.int (I believe that's the correct address) and create a login ID and you can see charts for European airports. The major airports have some long, slow arrivals to reduce noise over cities and such so citizens don't complain. For good ol' USA, go to airnav.com. Most US arrivals aren't as complicated. Enjoy! ~William Genovese~
June 18, 201213 yr Author Thanks William & Al, As you correctly surmised, just general enthusiasm, and it's a good learing curve for FMS. For instance, at waypoint NASRI for RWY 10, you cannot exceed 220 kts so you have to change this on the LEGS page. Something I never needed to do before. I picked EIDW and EGGP because the TA is 5000 ft for both airports, and it's a short flight ideal for learning. I'll try Airnav as I want to try KBOS-KJFK next. Thanks Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry. If you need any help with charts and FMS let me know. You seem fairly proficient, but I have taken my Instrument Rating class in college (Oklahoma State Univ. 5 years ago) and passed the FAA Instrument written with a 95% (yes I am proud and bragging a little, ha) so I can help a little. Plus there are some real-life airliner pilots on here that can help. ~William Genovese~
June 18, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the offer William, I may take you up on that :) Thanks for the kind words too ;) Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK. June 18, 201213 yr try to fly SID/STARS with MCP manually, or with hands, its much more interesting than via FMS. Lj. Prodanovic
June 18, 201213 yr Author Thank you Lj, I will try this at some stage. Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry. June 18, 201213 yr try to fly SID/STARS with MCP manually, or with hands, its much more interesting than via FMS. The variation I like is to switch on the FD, LNAV and VNAV, but not the actual AP master switch, and then hand-fly following the flight director bars. John-Alan Pascoe
June 23, 201213 yr I was just asking about SID / STAR selection during pre-planning of a flight. What is the most proficient way of selecting a sid/star for airports you are not familiar with at all? Of course they are all listed in FSBuild but I wouldn't know which whey they were departing or arriving without looking at the actual charts. So, my question in general is do you hop online first and review all the charts to select the most appropriate prior to plugging them into your planner? Thanks Benjamin. Benjamin Van Eps

If its in the US I chose what flightaware has listed and the flight plan they provide but often you have to look at whats available and chose what is best based on common sense. June 23, 201213 yr Most SIDs and STARS connect to the first and last waypoint on your flight plan - these are usually transitions to and from the SID and STAR, and seeing how you've created your own route, you should know what your SID or STAR is already :-). Sometimes if I'm lazy and unfamiliar with the airport, I'll just have the display on MAP and choose random STARS and SIDS until everything looks good. This is the case for me in the UK where they seem to have a multitude of arrivals all with the same innitial VOR. Like I said, sometimes I'm lazy and don't feel like checking out http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/index.php%3Foption=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=6&Itemid=13.html

What Craig said above works well. Also, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, there are sites like airnav.com and www.ead.eurocontrol.int that will show you the charts related to the airports so you can see which STAR/SID goes in the direction you need. There are other official sites for Japan and other countries too. Just google it ~William Genovese~
