June 21, 201213 yr As most pilots I know, I have a passing interest in all things maritime. I'm not sure what the connection is, but it's undoubtedly there for many of us. More specifically, submarine warfare catches my interest. I decided to pull Silent Hunter 4 and the U-Boat missions add-on out of "storage" (My favorite of the FIVE in the series [sH5 was a let down]). 3 hours later, I had installed both programs and added my 2 GB worth of "mods" from the community (Trigger Maru, Run Silent Run Deep, Etc.). I have to say, this has been a nice departure from the usual flight simming lately, and has really hooked me while I'm on summer break from class. Before long, I'll have Silent Hunter III and Grey Wolves expansion/Mod tacked on (aging but still a real GEM for simulation enthusiast). Anyone else have the submarine sim bug? ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
June 21, 201213 yr Yup, me. Got pretty much every sub sim there is. Best one is Dangerous Waters. You might like these vids I made years ago: Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 21, 201213 yr Still play Silent Hunter 4 from time to time. I really wish someone would come out with an upgraded modern attack sub. Like a high-def version of Janes 688i ( I really miss that game). June 21, 201213 yr I have Silent Hunter, Wolves of the Pacific. I found it was so buggy that I lost interest. Never did find out about any mods or online community. Don't even know if this is a good sim, or not. What can you guys tell me? Is it any good? Kind regards,

Didn't quite stick for me, for whatever reason. Perhaps the modern naval warfare subject matter is what turned me off? The Hunt for Red October is, however, one of my favorite movies of all time. ;) Nice vid! LOL Still play Silent Hunter 4 from time to time. Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2 I was awed by the sonar simulation back in it's day. Dangerous Waters takes all of that to another level (though graphically the same). What can you guys tell me? Is it any good? Kind regards, Wolves of the Pacific is actually, IMO, the best one. With the mods I named in the OP (Trigger Maru 2.5, RSRD, a few others), it's quite an enjoyable and enthralling sim. I had used Trigger Maru's "rival" super mod (Real Fleet Boat) for a while because of it's advertised realism, but avoiding destroyers got to be quite frustrating. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
June 21, 201213 yr An intersting one, if you've never tried it, is 1914 Shells of Fury by Rondomedia. It's not graphically stunning, but it is interesting in being a WW1 submarine sim, so the emphasis is of course on using the deck gun more to sink merchants, although there are torpedoes, but calculating the offset is hard. I actually made my own chart of speeds and ranges to help with that. If you like the history of German subs (as I do), then it may possibly float your boat from an historical interest standpoint. It is broadly similar to perhaps Silent Hunter 1 or 2. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 21, 201213 yr I been playing submarine simulators since the days of GATO for the Commodore and Apple 2 computers, I loved that one. Also every release of the Silent Hunter series. my preference is WW2 sims over the modern ones. Nothing more fun then hunting and sinking merchant ships and diving and evading detection from the escort Corvettes Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Do you happen to have a link, and any detailed recommendations? If so, I will climb out of the cockpit and rummage around to find my goggles and flippers and jump into the water for a change! Kind regards,
June 22, 201213 yr Funny timing that this post came up. Just last night I reached for my Dangerous Waters to re-install. I last played it on an older computer. I primarily used it for controlling the FFG since my last sea-duty was on one of these. I guess I can be considered Anti-submarine in a way. Keith Guillory

June 22, 201213 yr I tried the freeware Danger From The Deep a couple of times, but it's very much WIP and crashy. The sea-surface visuals are impressive; would that FS could look as good. Ultimately, though, I just didn't like firing torpedoes at unsuspecting ships..

Expect more junk convoys but also bigger merchant convoys towards '44/'45. (Use RSRDC_TMO_v502, and RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1 ONLY) Install in the above order. June 23, 201213 yr I think I might load it up on one of my mechanical drives and give it a try again. Thanks for all the links, and everyone else for their suggestions. Kind regards,
June 23, 201213 yr Deuce, somehow you got managed to re-ignite an interest to these kind of vessels, which have always been fascinating for me. Managed to gain some tonnage during SH3 days with manual targeting even. https://www.youtube.com/user/JustaRandomSimmer Simulator Videos http://sierra-hotel.blogspot.com Aviation Picture Blog
June 23, 201213 yr Author Managed to gain some tonnage during SH3 days with manual targeting even. I've gotten pretty good at "plinking" slow movers (Merchants, unaware large warships). My latest manual TDC kill came last night after *literally* 5 hours of real time stalking an IJN task force. I managed to score a lethal hit with two torpedoes on a Heavy Cruiser. The Kaiyo Class fleet carrier was a tougher nut to crack. With two torpedoes to the port side from 3000 yards, she limped and listed for over an hour... The coup de grace came from a rear-fired Mk14 that hit dead center. :spiteful: Quite the enthralling gameplay, is the point to my long-windedness. I was, however, ticked when I glanced at my watch and realized it was 1am. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
