Gmap Sectionals or Nav Data?

Featured Replies

I ordered sectionals of Alaska for my Gmap program the other day, but mostly I am looking for airports, frequencies of VORs, runways, etc.. It is difficult to read these sometimes from a sectional on a small display. I decided to order the Nav data today for the entire World which is also $9.95 and find it much more useful for what I want. You can toggle on and off the displays you want on the moving map, airports, VORs, NDBs, Seaplane Airports, and if Flight gets one, Heliports. Check it out. http://fswidgets.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=59

Bought both a few days ago. It`s very useful since the ingame map is useless.

In game display is more of a Navaid , Airport display, than any kind of map.

Once they get this working as a moving map on a linked Android tablet I will be all over this. :D

Edit: I actually got it to halfway decently work using iDisplay for Android as a second monitor. Still a bit of a kludge though.

Nice. Is the Igmap HD for iPad compatible with Flight?

No, not yet. Here is what TweakFS (the dev of GMap) said about it:

I can't offer any estimates or predictions (sorry), but the desktop version of GMap for MS Flight is serving as a test bed for MS Flight support which as you know is a challenging proposition. Once we have connectivity to MS Flight working without any major issues we will most likely add MS Flight support to the Network Pack utility (the utility that sends the data to the mobile apps).

It's a quote from this topic:

BTW Thanks for the info, Bobsk8, about the World Nav Data. I was considering what to get, sectionals or World Nav Data, also because I am not used to using sectionals: I was in doubt if it would be of any benefit to me and how easy it would be to actually find airports on them. I also thought about the future: if Flight moves away from the US (Norway...? ) then I would maybe miss those sectionals because there aren't any for outside of the US. Anyway, I don't have to think about that anymore now.

You are welcome.I probably will use the navdata 99% of the time now that I see how it looks. Easy pulls up airports VOR's and ILS freqs and runway alignments, which is what I need most of the time, plus it works in Alaska,

Ah! Sold.

Thanks...I am also deliberating whether to get the nav data vs the sectionals. I could use some education here....the nav data contains ILS frequencies, VOR's, runway alignments, (does it have runway elevations?) so what else do sectionals contain? As far as I'm aware, sectionals also have terrain elevations, obstacles, airspace information...basically a sectional is a complete tool, (and thus is totally necessary for actual flight) whereas the nav data maps are less information, but probably easier to read within this application?

You pretty much nailed it, on all points. Sectionals are more useful for pilotage, or navigating by looking out the window, but the airport/navaid data is harder to see. And you don't get ILS info. They do show airways, though, if you want to fly (or stay clear of) them.

Indeed, the Nav data is easier to use: you clearly see the airports, VORs, etc. and you can call up information about airports (including elevation in feet and meters!). You can also search for any airport (click on -DISC to make that easier to do, because normally GMap keeps the airplane centered onscreen). Sectionals are exactly as you can see them on Skyvector: for me it's very hard to simply find for instance an airport on them... The World Nav Data clearly shows everything on the map.

I just bought that World Nav Data and made some screenshots of it. Here I am flying from Anaktuvuk Pass to Crevice Creek, following the valleys. I created the flightplan with Plan-G, saved it as an FSX-plan and loaded it in GMap. When I got close to Crevice Creek I simply clicked on the airport to see what the heading of the runway was. Luckily for me it was almost the same as my current heading. On the second screenshot you can (hopefully) see the runway, straight ahead. Without GMap I certainly would have missed it under these circumstances (I could have used the ingame map in that case, but because you only see a magenta dot on a lot of green, it isn't as helpful as GMap, I can tell you). On the last shot you see me after landing, with the airportinformationbox in GMap closed.

So go get GMap and buy that World Nav Data! I think it's great that FSWidgets supports Flight, it's the only 'real' 3PD addon for Flight, so Fermin (TweakFS) deserves our support in dollars. (Since this is the ONLY available 3PD addon I don't think anyone will mind this plug... )

P.S. GMap for Flight is still a work in progress: as you can see the heading of the airplane in GMap is wrong (stuck pointing upwards, but the plane itself does move of course), but hopefully that will get solved (although I already gotten used to it and it's not a real problem). When everything is working as it should, there is a big change we will also get GMap for Flight for iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.

And in case you have one monitor and don't like it that GMap works best with Flight in windowed mode: check out a solution for that here:

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/378493-how-to-use-gmap-as-a-popup-within-flight-full-screen-on-one-monitor/

This looks like a great add-on for MS FLIGHT, enhancing it's already great features as a flight simulation game that conveys important aspects of "flying" in RL to it's users should they be willing to learn from the various interesting experiences they can face while playing it, and apparently not causing any sort of embarrass to the MS FLIGHT marketing strategy.

I plan to download it and buy World Nav Data, and already emailled [email protected] asking for their support to the project.

go get GMap and buy that World Nav Data!

I'm sold, I'm think I'm going to get that tonight.

And yep, I've got the window mode solution....it works fantastic. looks just like I've got a GPS crammed awkwardly into my dashboard just like my car, but it works like a charm!!!

I see there's another app for this named "Air Display*" that's $10. I wonder which of the two is better?
