Land on this one in your RV

Featured Replies

Northeast of Wasilla is an airport called Jack Fish Landing (7AK4). This should be an interesting landing in anything faster than the cub or Icon.

I took a couple of screen shots, but they came out too dark to do the strip justice. Go have a look.

Thank you.

Hey, anyone located the "road to nowhere"? A group landing on the "road to nowhere" would be a cool multiplayer deal...

I got in and out of Jack Fish landing in the maule

Thanks for the challenge, that was a really nice one. I just landed the RV-6 there going westwards against a 10 kts headwind. Killed altitude and speed coming down the hill by doing one long sideslip and managed to stop the RV briefly after the middle of the runway. Took off against the headwind and climbed safely out of the hole. Really enjoyed it.

Also a nicely done surrounding, the best blending of urban and rural textures I've seen in Flight so far. Flew down south to another small airstrip and everything looked very natural from above.

I just got credit for the landing in the RV. I came in from the south trying to bleed off speed after the first dip. I turned hard to line up with the runway bleeding more speed in the turn. I did not touchdown until about halfway along the runway. I finally stopped off the end of the runway. I did not do it on my first pass as it took a couple passes to get in there correctly.

Thanks I was wondering if there were complex approach airports that would be fun to land at. :good:

The Maule is STOL, correct? Of all the (deluxe) planes does the Stearman or the RV require more runway to get to a stop?

I would place my bet on the RV, but it does have flaps, and the brakes on the Stearman are a little lackluster.

I agree the RV has better brakes but I think that the stearman stalls at a lower speed. Its a good question... needs to be tested.

Lackluster? Stomp on them hard and the plane flips right over. :o

I suggest landing into the wind and holding the stick full back when you brake. I got the shortest landing distances in the fly-in events in the Stearman. Blue ribbon was easy with that plane.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Approached Rwy 24, 100% flaps, 100% up elevator trim, skimmed the trees coming in, cut power to -0- coming over the ridge, slammed on the brakes at touchdown. Used about 3/4 of the runway. Exciting. :)

There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.

I think they have the airport in the wrong location. If you hit Bing Maps and search for this location (361 W Jack Fish Rd, Wasilla, AK), you will see where the airport should really be. What clued me in was that should have been a lake if it was in a hole like that. They would need some serious pumps to keep it from flooding after every rain.

Good one. Here it is on Google maps. https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=61.541480556,-149.460680556&t=h&z=16

Looks like a neighborhood airstrip with houses along both sides of the strip.

What I did was set Clear Sky so that I wouldn't have any wind to help or hurt. Full fuel and took-off from 6, flew the pattern and tried to land. After 4 tries I gave up and switched take off to 24 and landed a bit faster than I wanted but did it in the first shot. At least for me 24 had an easier approach.

Yup.

There are two Jack Fish Landing locations in Google maps. If you type Jack Fish Landing into Google maps it will show two labels. A is the airport but B is in the woods where Flight has the airport located. I should add that just putting Jack Fish Landing into Google Maps only finds the airport. Once you have the airport displayed search again and you will get the other location. Searching Google Earth brings up both locations as the first two entries.
