Hmm I am tempted to buy Alaska as its on sale in steam, but I promised not to before they implement ATC and AI.

Cartographers (check out the cool maps Ray discovered)? Geologists, volcanologists etc? Property developers? Civil engineers? Detailed mesh might be useful for them.

 

I'm at Cold Bay heading s/w over the next day or so. I'll let you know what I think of the mesh - although I tend to be fairly forgiving.

 

Alaska is growing on me, but I really hope that the next couple of planes really let it shine. A (not even proper) Cub just doesn't really do it for me. The lack of an ADF is much more of an issue here than Hawaii.

Yes! But a proper GPS would be welcomed too. I believe we might get the Icon5 GPS for the Cub cockpit, and that's a rather limited one...

 

Someone mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the next DLC aircraft after the Carbon Cub would include an ADF and even an RMI (???). I asked about the source of that info, but got no reply :-) Was it a joke? Is it based on true feedback from the MS FLIGHT Team?

 

I would feel very happy if a forthcoming aircraft DLC would include:

 

- An EGT gauge

- An ADF, or, even better, an RMI

 

It would be simply great if we got a good GPS. It certainly doesn't have to be a G1000, and for me a Garmin296 just as the one I see on many aircraft at local aerodromes would be just fine, provided it had some useful routing functionality implemented....

 

ATIS!!!! Including ATIS would be great! Being able to tune the ATIS on some areas and get even a text-based weather info on the screen would be very good for our jobs under the new weather themes...

I don't trust these newfangled things... read too many rw incidents involving GPS as the primary mode of navigation. ;-) Although I can certainly see the benefits, and inevitablility of progress. Besides, until there are aircraft with the performance to match, the map and Mk.I eyeball are my current Alaska navigation tools, with the VOR back up (hence why I want an ADF!). I figure an ADF would be simpler to implement in Flight in the short term.

With the pop-up capability of GMap and flight plans from Plan-G, in-panel GPS has moved to the back burner for me. I still want it, yes, but with a reasonable substitute in place I actually would prefer dev attention on other issues.

I doubt seriously if I would use an in panel GPS either , when I can hit a key and bring up Gmap which has everything, and much easier to access than most GPS's. Frequencies, runways, ILS headings, sectional terrain clearances, airport traffic areas, airspace outlines, and it's all there. Any can be used in any aircraft.

It would be great if they allowed for the connection of externl devices as I do with SilentWings and my RL soaring flight computer/gps :-)

Have a look at Jeroen's tutorial for using Plan-G with Gmap - he has a link there to a file you can download if you do not have FSX/FS9 installed, which gets you the database.

GPS is the technology, that's dropped Alaska's aircraft accident rate by 40%. ADF has been eliminated in most new aircraft for years, at least in the USA, where WAAS is available. The space shuttle didn't spend 9 days mapping the earths topography for nothing, let alone having at least 24 satelittes up in space to give us 8 to 11 satellites to choose from at any one time.

 

No.............there are NOT too many RW accidents because of GPS. There certainly have been accidents in which older GPS wasn't beneficial in helping to save the day, because of a lack of a modern terrain data-base. I've been using RW aviation GPS since 1993, and am very familiar with it's use, benefits, and operation. I could care less about ADF, and don't much care for VORs anymore. Alaska is a principle state, in which many $ were invested to bring GPS on line as the #1 form of navigation. This is mostly due to the "line of sight" limitations of VOR nav. Modern airliners, as well as many newer GA airplanes also use GPS as the main navigation source.

I agree with that. With limited monitor space, in panel GPS is just to small. I'd want a pop-up or seperate monitor, even if the GPS is depicted in a panel.

This is why I'm hoping they connect Flight's version of GMap to their Android app soon... I have a 7" tablet that fits perfectly between my stick and throttle.

 

I still would like to have a working ADF receiver, though. Even with GPS as the primary navaid, you can never have too many secondary sources of information. And all those NDBs are already sitting there anyway... but that is also a low-pri item to me.

 

I just took a flight to PAVL Kivalina Airport in Northwestern Artic section of Alaska. I made a flight plan and put it in Gmap. Here are a couple of photos.

Short final on the 3000 ft runway, which is surrounded by water on either side. The only approach listed in the Airport approaches is RNAV using a GPS. No NDB around there.
