Paul, I'd like to see the other data you said a 5 minute wiki search turns up.

I couldn't find it either.

Robert what do you mean? I was joking.

Yes, I know you were joking! That's why I said it was funny! :D

Once again this thread has turned into an Airbus vs Boeing debate.......

Yes- and let's stop the flames. I only opened the thread as a way of sharing what I thought was a very beautiful airplane. Then I made the mistake of allowing myself to be baited when someone challenged Boeing's claim of reliability by inviting me to cruise Wiki for 5 minutes. Shame on me for taking the bait.

All of that to the side, can we all admit the 737MAX is one very pretty girl? It really doesn't matter which manufacturer is better. I only was saying the MAX is eye-catching, yeah?

We certainly do not need to debate the merits of one company versus another. I think everyone can find some common ground and may have his or her own 'favorite' airplane, for whatever reason. There is no need or room for contentiousness. I think the purpose of this forum is to share thoughts, ideas and information among others who share a common love of flight.

My comment wasn't aimed at you Robert I was just pointing out the fact that every time somebody starts a thread about either a Boeing or Airbus aircraft, somebody has to take it upon themselves to make it into a vs argument unfortunately. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but it gets a little ridiculous on here sometimes. I would love to see the 737 max. I just got done doing the factory tour at Paine Field this week and they said they just got an order from United for either 150 to 200 new 737s. Pretty exciting news for Boeing.

You're quite right. I too recently took the Paine tour- and was stunned by the imagination on exhibit at that plant! When you see the composite material in the new 787 Dreamliner, and learn that they eliminated 50,000 rivets in the process - it's 'wow time' in my book. I highly recommend that tour to anyone who has access to Washington State. For $18 you can't beat it.

Guys, I won't be warning again: this topic is very quickly going in the wrong direction, I deleted offensive posts and flaming. Curse words even when hidden are still curse words and nationalist speeches, no matter what direction, are going to be deleted.

Continue this course and find the topic deleted.

Thank you.

Well I don't know about reliability, since those numbers are generally kept confidential by the airlines and I don't really trust marketing speeches (by any manufacturer). Safety statistics are easier to come by though, so I was intrigued by Paul's post and headed over to the Boeing Statistical Summary of Commercial Jet Airplane Accidents. Page 20 has safety statistics per type. Obviously there are more factors at play here, and one accident caused by human error (so not due to the design) on a plane that isn't used much can cause a big jump in the accident rates.

Still, it turns out that Paul is quite correct, the 717 and CRJ-700-1000 both have considerably better safety records (i.e. have been lucky). In it's class the 737NG is best though. Which is to say that if you take one flight a day it would take you on average* 9132 years and 5 months to have an accident, whereas on an A32X it would take 'only' 8302 years and 2 months. Those are the times to have a hull loss accident. To be in a fatal accident (i.e. one of more people die, most people will probably still survive), will take roughly double as long.

*Note to avoid the wrath of actual statisticians: the chance of actually experiencing a crash at some time within that time period is I believe 63%, since it's the average time to have a crash. Probability can be really confusing and I'm to lazy to pull out my lecture notes and work it out precisely ;).

Oddly, it was some Embraer figures that I was looking at, but as I said, I only spent about 5 minutes looking. So there you go, two other 'American' aircraft manufacturers that put your original claim in doubt. Perhaps now you can be a little more critical without having to be unpatriotic.

As a general note, can I suggest that if you want to engage in conversations involving your personal opinions or preferences, you do so from a personal account and not one that has the Avsim 'STAFF' banner emblazoned on it.

It can't be, it hasn't been made yet. Full stop.
