July 22, 201213 yr Had anyone used the Opus weather engine yet? Any feedback? How does it compare to AS2012? The write up on it makes it seem much better. I am surprised because I came here thinking this would have been much discussed about topic sure to the supposed all new way to import weather into FSX but am thinking there is not much intrest in it?? August 25, 201213 yr Commercial Member You might be interested to hear that we are now considering ways of including the Live Weather Engine within demo mode, albeit in a somewhat limited form. That way people can see for themselves all the benefits of the instant loading of the detailed weather created by the engine. No more totally unrealistic global weather, no more screen flickers whilst the sky clears and the weather slowly loads, no more weather morphing etc.. Of course, we do not include any high definition sky and cloud textures, so we recommend the use of REX, ActiveSky, or FEX for their high def textures, and OpusFSX for the detailed weather. Perhaps I will post some more screenshots. You should also be aware that the Live Weather Engine is continually being enhanced and improved upon. The latest offering is available (to licensed users) as a beta version, version 2.10.3. New updates and features are always being posted. We are currently working on another several upgrades to the Live Weather Engine. There will soon be a remote 'client side' operation which will allow you to offload the engine on to a networked client (without the need to install FSX on the client), there will be a upgrade to look beyond the weather horizon to stabilise and improve the generated weather whilst crossing METAR void areas (e.g. deserts, seas and oceans), and a few other interesting tweaks and improvements. Regards Stephen
August 26, 201213 yr Commercial Member Hi Eric Can I also point you to other recent discussions on the Avsim forum, http://forum.avsim.net/topic/380086-opusfsx/ Regards Stephen
August 26, 201213 yr Commercial Member Eric, thought you might be interested in this ... Calling all OpusFSX users ... Please download and try our latest OpusFSX Version 2.10.4 offering, I guarantee you won't be disappointed and the localised weather within the Dynamic Weather is really starting to show its worth, especially combined with the new intelligent turbulence effects. You won't want to ever go back to the phoney global weather or METAR updates again. Yesterday whilst flying the PMDG 737NGX I could clearly make out a line of thunderstorm and towering cumulus about 40 to 50 miles ahead. Real live weather, I know because in reality my house was underneath them. As we approached and flew through them the turbulence built up but then resided as we flew into a clearer zone. In exact agreement with the METARS. Surrounded by distant thunder storms we landed in light rain at East Midlands before the weather once again closed in. All ATIS reports matching the real world conditions exactly as expected. Now that's quite something even if I say so myself ! An impossible effect if you are using phoney global weather or relying on METAR updates within FSX/P3D. I know if you're not a licensed user you won't be able to enjoy the Live Weather Engine, but we are trying to figure out how to include it within the 10 minute demo. We have some fantastic enhancements coming up for the intelligent turbulence, improved ground friction effects, differentiating between different terrain types, cloud types, hilly and mountainous conditions, We are even looking into the conditions for blue-sky turbulence. All based on 'real' accelerometer data. Keep those ideas coming. Many Thanks and Regards Stephen
August 26, 201213 yr As you say, we have to take your word for it for now. Any real user willing to chime in? Jos

August 26, 201213 yr That link doesn't work. And I'm interested also in hearing from other USERS on this. AJ Pongress

August 26, 201213 yr Author I am assuming it can install on a different drive on the deanne computer as FSX? If so, I am going to buy this and give it a go on Tuesday when I am off. Stephen is a good salesman. If the engine does what he says it sounds pretty darn good. But one l last question for you Stephen, how does your weather engine handle FSX winds aloft? Must one use fsuipc to control it? With AS2012 in DWC mode it provides for realistic winds aloft without sudden wind shifts without the use of fsuipc. Eric
August 26, 201213 yr Commercial Member Sounds interesting... Would like to see some kind of comparison between Active Sky and this with real world weather.
August 26, 201213 yr Commercial Member Hi Eric Nice to hear from you, quite some time has passed since you opened this topic. I only stumbled across it the other day so I thought I had better reply. You can install OpusFSX on a drive of your choosing provided it is installed into an OpusFSX folder. Regarding the winds aloft, these are simulated at present and a great deal of effort has gone into preventing any sudden wind shifts during weather updates. We do not use FSUIPC4 for any of our weather related processing, it is all done through our detailed Dynamic Weather. Details of all the numerous benefits are described on our website etc. We do make some use of FSUIPC for some other minor functions and accessing the MCP/EFIS panel data for the non-PMDG aircraft. Not sure if AS2012 has stopped the sudden wind shifts completely, some Avsim comments seem to indicate serious problems for everyone. This is to be expected because we have isolated some serious software problems within FSX/P3D relating to interpolating winds aloft and these must be taken into account. Regards Stephen
August 26, 201213 yr Hello, I use OpusFSX FS Interface a few months now and I'm very happy with it. I ran into this software reading a topic of a cockpit builders forum and I decided to buy when I saw it was good to use on a standalone PC as well. At the same time I purchased Rex Essential and I found out that the Live Weather Engine of the OpusFSX was far better than the Rex one. I found it comprehensible as the roots of Rex is environment and that's their speciality. So I use it for their HD Cloud texture and have their weather engine completely disabled. Last but not least I'm very happy with the impressive support and the spectacular plans and ideas of the developers. I think I have said this in more than one occasion: This is definitely becoming a booming addon! Mark my words. salu2 Fdovillamil P.S.: I'm trying very hard to make a short video with some of its features, but I do not manage well this video-making-thing, but I keep trying. Joop H.
August 26, 201213 yr Commercial Member Sounds interesting... Would like to see some kind of comparison between Active Sky and this with real world weather. Ours is the ONLY product that uses a unique method of Dynamic Weather update. All the benefits of these are listed on our website. I am not aware of ANY other method that can load real world weather into FSX/P3D that works. There are serious flaws to loading METARS into FSX, you must either assumed the weather is global (phoney and totally unrealistic), or you must clear the sky and slowly load the METARs one at a time (totally unrealistic and very annoying), also as soon as you start this process FSX starts to morph and vary the weather. We've tried the other methods and none of them were good enough. As far as looks are concerned, well just load the great ActiveSky sky and cloud textures and away you go. Regards Stephen
August 26, 201213 yr Moderator Sounds interesting... Would like to see some kind of comparison between Active Sky and this with real world weather. Me too, but there seems to be a lack of actual user feedback. I might be interested if they would market just a stand alone weather generator since I dont need all the other stuff, but I am pretry happy with AS2012 for weather as it is, so this program would really have to knock my sock off for weather depiction. See our last post. If you use virtual cockpits you might find our ultra-real Dynamic Head Movements (camera shake) effects very interesting, the AHM might be useful when taxiing or banking, along with our user-friendly Live Camera interface. Perhaps a bit of creative camera panning effects in the future or video making, perhaps you might like to off-load a camera view or nice external aircraft shot onto a spare laptop etc. etc. Please check out our Flight1 forum for other upgrade plans. But it all costs about the same as other packages so why not just enable what you want and leave the rest for when you want to expand your horizons. Either that or just have your two penny worth on our forum and let us know what you want, you never know what might happen. Regards Stephen
