Flight - Should I take the plunge?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I currently have FSX / Acceleration. I mostly play the missions. Almost cleared all the beginner missions. I find the advanced missions to be a bit over my head for now. I play with a keyboard, don't have a yoke or joystick.

Now I'm reading so much good stuff about Flight. All those (clandestine) missions seem like a lot of fun. I'm not looking for realism, but more for entertainment.

How does it play with a keyboard? Is it manageable or should I get a yoke / joystick? Should I be looking for force feedback joystick?

I noticed on Steam they have a deal where you can buy the whole package / addons for US$ 50. Seems like a good deal. Should I take the plunge?

Thanks for your input. Regards,

'nuff

Well... you can download the base pack for free, which gives you something to get the feel of it. Use the mouse if you don't have a stick. And if you like what you see, the $50 will get you a couple of planes along with more scenery. The two extra planes - the RV and the Maule (of FSX fame) are well worth it.

You really should! The "mouse as control" in ms flight is very well programmed and I use it a lot.

I no longer recall ~very well FSX Acceleration missions, but the RedBull races were my preferred "missions"/"Challenges". I would really like to have it, as well as the corresponding airplane models, in MS FLIGHT :-)

I am going to install the free part tonight and give it a try. If I like it I'll buy the complete package I mentioned in my first post.

I'm not the type that sets up a flight plan and flies from A to B (mostly because I lack the skills). I really enjoy the missions. I hope to get more of that in Flight.

Well, right now there aren't that many missions. Most missions are landing challenges for the various airplanes and there are just one or two other 'real' missions. You can do jobs, but those aren't real missions as in FSX but more pre-programmed A to B flights.

You can fly a few hoops courses and you get gold rush challenges (or whatever they are called) and you also get aerocache missions, where you have to find out (by searching on the internet) where a certain aerocache is hidden (an aerocache is an icon that floats in the Flight world and you have to fly through it to catch it). But again, while these are fun to some  they aren't really missions like in FSX.

Still, the base pack is free so it's a very wise decision to give that one a try!

Thanks Jeroen,

Seems like a nice variety of tasks to keep one busy with Flight. They all sound good to me.

Another reason for switching to Flight is your tutorials which are tailor made for Flight. I can then practice VOR flights. Thanks for your reply!

Like said many times before, yes you should!

If you like Flightsims, you probably will like flight!

It runs smooth, looks good and is easy to learn, but maybe a little hard to master every aspect. The weather theme's look great too, so i can't think of a reason why you shouldn't at least try the free Hawaii Big Island region.

If you do like it, i would advice you to buy Alaska as well, and as for planes: I really like the Maule M7. It's a great plane to learn VOR navigation and ILS-landings, and you can perform jobs (cargo or passenger flights).

It sounds like Flight would be very appealing to you.

It really doesn't have a lot of "missions" as such, but some of the ones it does have are a lot of fun. What it does have is a Jobs Board at every airport, listing charter flights to airports ranging from 30nm up to 250nm or so away. There are Passenger flights, Cargo flights, even Tours in the Stearman biplane where you fly somebody around to scenic locations.

You don't have to learn navigation to complete those longer flights, as Flight puts a marker on the screen to guide you. There's a guide here in the forum for turning that marker off, though, if you do start learning how to find your own way around. There's also a "Skip to Waypoint" button that will jump you to the next part of your flight, so you can just skip over long parts of Jobs or Missions if you so choose.

The only ones you can't skip on are the Clandestine smuggling runs, as there is a police plane out there searching for you.

You can play with a mouse and keyboard...but you really gotta invest in a joystick or a yoke. You can pick up a reasonable joystick for 30$ or even less. Flight is SO good at mouse-control, it's basically a cheat. I use it as an autopilot, actually. With a joystick, you have to worry about small corrections, trim, all kinds of stuff. The flight model is Flight is also very good, and a joystick or a yoke (preferably with pedals, but not totally necessary) to get a real feel for the various control surfaces of a plane.

In my opinion, grab the Hawaii pack. It will provide a few planes with cockpits, Hawaii looks fantastic, and you will get a feel as to whether you want to become hopelessly helplessly addicted like the rest of us.

If you don't want to invest in a yoke, Flight controls very, very well with an Xbox 360 controller. If you already have a 360, you can get a wireless USB receiver for it, if not you can buy the Xbox controller and receiver separately, or I believe they have a wired USB version - either option are much less than a yoke and more useful for other applications as well.

Thank you everybody for your replies. Missions and Jobs Board sound great to me. I'm downloading Flight right now.

I've always thought about getting the Saitek yoke, but getting that for just one game (FSX) seemed a bit expensive to me. If I like Flight it will make the purchase of the yoke more acceptable.

Again, I appreciate everybody's input. Cheers!

I enjoyed flying with the mouse in Flight for a long time, it works very well except for extreme maneuvering needed for aerobatics, etc. I finally broke down and got a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (like a lot of people here) mainly for dogfighting with buddies. It makes a big difference -- but you have to learn to land all over again.

There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.

Too bad you didn't think about taking the plunge earlier during the Steam sale... the entire Flight package was under $20. I definitely do think you should give it a try though.

the entire Flight package was under $2

Aaaah! Darn, missed that. :(

In any case, I installed Flight yesterday and tried it out. I was pleasantly surprised, but wasn't blown away either. I didn't like the mouse control that much, but I guess I need to get used to that.

I don't have any other controllers so I guess I need to invest in one. For now I need to play with it a bit longer.

Then you really should go for a joystick. You should check out the Logitech 3D Extreme, it's cheap and works great. Many simmers use it.
