Plan-G v3 released

Now that's a good tip. Where can I find that option? Edited. That one?

Yep, that's the one.

And it's a nice feature indeed. We had that copy route thing before for exporting a string, but I always wondered how to get some route description into Plan-G in the same text based way.

Lets see how that lack of terrain map does against the improvements. So far, I'm quite pleased with V3 (except for the font used).

I would think it would be quite easy for the developer to draw elevation lines on on the map based on the elevation information files we download and install separately for the plan profile. Perhaps this is something we can suggest for him to make up for the change of maps…

I guess that would make sense. I only see elevation information on the plan view so far.

I couldn't find the route editing option, how am I supposed to create a route and then easiliy add navaids etc. like in v2?

Edit: From the dev http://www.tasoftwar...sg10218 sounds promising.

Can V3 now plan the climb leg(s) taking into account the slower speed, the rate of climb of the aircraft and calculate the Top of Climb ? And in the final portion can it plan the ToD at the planning stage ?

The 'OpenCycleMap' maps have terrain lines/shading, but I doubt it's complete world wide. I was using it for navigating around part of Indonesia last night, and it was the only one of the map sources that had ANY coverage of Indonesia..

Well, I like it. It works much faster than V2 and the elevation data may not show up on the map but you can download some free one to be taken into account when planning.

Obviously this option (which was already there in v2) isn't a solution at ALL for missing terrain... So I will stay with v2 too for my flightplanning.

I will check out v3 though to see how the new VOR radial option works but I already know v3 won't become my main VFR planning tool. I mean, what good is a VFR planning tool without terrain showing up? Imagine using sectional charts for VFR flights (or whatever they are called) without terrain on them.

No big deal btw because v2 runs fine and apart from all that I won't moan about freeware, specially if it has payware quality all over it.

Just checked out the program. That radial option isn't what I expected it to be. You can't simply figure out at what radial a certain spot is but you have to enter radials and distance yourself after which you see a line. So if you want to figure out radials for triangulation you will need to add radials a dozen times until you get them right...? Odd functoin... I also have some other problems (airports not showing up at certain zoom levels) so I won't even keep v3 installed. Pity.

On a positive note... checking out the functions of v3 made me discover about cross references in v2... which is exactly what I was looking for when I read about that new radial option. So I will definitely stay with v2!

Version 2 it is, for me also. The things added don't come close to offsetting the loss of terrain mapping.

Oh, well.

I don't think that the 'loss' is the final state. He had something in mind with switching from Google or another service like Bing maps. So I guess 3.0 is just the beginning and relying on a free to use (and save) service like OSM may offer some potential.

If Google allows for V2 to run on and on, there's nothing stopping you of course. I also have both installed.

Look at the link I've posted, he has some other plans than using another commercial map.

Guys, there IS a terrain map in v.3. Go to the options/general and choose OpenCycleMap as map provider. I thought he didn't include this based on his previous comments. There are even aerial photos.

Edit: The ComicSans font is irritating though. :P

He didn't include it *as the default* because it's a small private company, I guess if there's only a few dozen of us are using it, it's not a big deal, but he's worried all 60,000 plan-g users would swamp their servers and likely make them turn off access.
