Just got a yoke and pedals - a couple of questions

Featured Replies

I just bought a CH yoke and Saitek combat rudder pedals. They are awesome and really add a whole new experience to FSX!

Anyway, I had a couple of questions.

-Will FSX remember individual controller settings (for buttons, axes, etc) if I switch them out later? For example I have a joystick that I'll still use for aircraft that use sticks in real life e.g. the P-51 etc. So if I plug in my joystick and start FSX now, will it remember the way I had it configured or does it require reconfiguring every time?

-Is there a way to save all controls settings so that with a reinstall of FSX it could be quickly imported back in?

-This question would be more for the hardware forum, but what the heck. The toe brakes are functioning great but for some reason they seem to be very lightly engaged at all times (I get the BRAKES display in the bottom left constantly even when my feet are not on the pedals.) Is there a fix for this?

Thanks avsimmers :)

FSX saves the control setup in an XML file that will remember all different control devices by their ID (or names), so it will keep the data.

in winXP you can find the file named "standard.xml" somewhere around...

documents and settings/YOURNAME/application data/microsoft/fsx/controls/

basically the CONTROLS folder is in the same directory as your FSX.CFG.

this standard.xml stores all the controller data and you can back that up.

i have several subfolders in there with custom "standard.xml" file versions for different planes that i switch around before starting FSX.

or you could look into FSUIPC to configure your hardware.

for the brakes, you could try increasing the deadzone of the brakes axis!

Thank you Pete!

I should really get FSUIPC registered, I know most people here swear by it.

Definitely! I had problems with FSX losing which control was in which USB slot all the time and reassigning controls back to default. It was hugely frustrating. I got FSUIPC and disabled all my add on controls in FSX. Problem solved. FSUIPC is not intuitive, but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy. It also works around some bugs in FSX.

I would also untick 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' in the usb root hub properties

There is a fairly new tweak for the FSX brakes coming on or staying on with the pedals. Search around for something to do with 'antiskid brakes'. You can add a small xml to your add-ons that will send a 'release brakes' command almost contantly.

I think this was only recently discovered - evidently Columbus did not know about it.

Did you calibrate your pedals? I had to do that to "unstick" the brakes in FSX and XP10.

I found increasing the toe brakes sensitivity a few notches eliminated the problem. Didn't touch the null zone.

You also need to reverse the axis on them so they apply correct differential braking.

This is an automatic message.
