  1. my wild guess is: after they put up FSX on steam for a more or less reasonable price, probably with steamplay integrated multiplayer and maybe some sort of new beginner tutorials, they will start to release a stream of endless DLC aircraft that will have the same system depth as the default FSX aircraft, probably with better visuals. the long term FSX hobbyist dedicated to realism and being fond of products from A2A, realair, orbX and all the others will be let down by this, "noobies" (sim beginners who enjoy the casual simming) might flock and buy buy buy. couple of years later they will release a new flight sim, based on MS flight code with just some upgrades and fixes, and then will flood the market with add-on aircraft AND scenery with the default level of detail and system depth of the old ms flight DLC... the dedicated hobbyists already have their favorite third party producers (wether it be a2a, realair, carenado, iris, orbx, aerosoft and all the others) that deliver products that go WAY WAY beyond what FSX on default gave us, if dovetail games can keep those third party add-on companies supporting "their version" of FSX/flight... maybe even upgrade internal systems and stuff with their input... WHO KNOWS! just a wild guess and my two cents.
  2. and by correctly tweaking you can leave your sliders at a higher setting, while eliminating the artifacts and enjoy more details!
  3. just did a quick flyby. i can confirm that the VOR on 114.4 doesn't seem to work, the ADF on 223 is working, also checked the closest other VOR. LEVEL ISLAND vor on 116.5 is working. please note, i don't have Tongass Fjords X, only PNW and CRM, so that region is standard FSX for me. right instrument: yellow needle indicates ADF, green needle for VOR, but is inactive on 114.4.
  4. the talking about cores reminded me of something else. since we have the same CPU (4 cores) you might want to see if you already have this in your fsx.cfg [JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=14 for me this seems to work best. for an indepth explanation of this setting you can consult the usual tweaking guides, it basically tells fsx how to use the cores.
  5. yes indeed. i am a vegetarian and love to cook with tofu in many different variations.
  6. i used to see those black giant spikes around my plane too sometimes, when i panned the view. on top of every single spike is a tree or house (i am guessing the autogen objects) and they will "fall" down to their place, making the black spike disappear. while i have the same OS, same CPU and half the RAM, i am running with a NVIDIA gpu, so i think the tweaking is different, but if your system is running normally (meaning: if your computer is clean and not packed with background tasks and stuff) you should be able to deal with this problem. for me it started when i tweaked around the FSX.CFG file. after i reduced "FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION" to 0.2, in conjunction with "UsePools=0" and probably messing with "TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT" and also "TextureMaxLoad " i started getting the scary black spikes in scenery i always had no problem with! now for me it was just a matter of changing some of those options to the point they seem to work together perfectly with my CPU/GPU and i have not seen those spikes ever since (knock on wood!) if your GPU has 2GB or more videoram you should try the usepools=0 and check your other options. for me, at the moment, these settings work best: [bufferPools] UsePools=0 [Display] TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=120 [Main] FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.30 [Graphics] HIGHMEMFIX=1 i think you can find good tutorials on tweaking the FSX.CFG right here on avsim.com and also searching google for "fsx tweak guide" will lead you to some excellent resources. be warned though, as my example shows, too much tweaking can mess up your experience! good luck, i hope you can enjoy flying FSX again soon.
  7. a pain to watch, not because of the plane (i LOVE the twin otter), but the presenter could have at least done some checklist checking and get familiar with the cockpit layout BEFORE starting the video. but still kinda fun anyway (luckily you can skip around the boring parts). what bothered me was, the landings i saw and his crash landing with super low speed, there was no stall warning horn. i wonder if he was flying completely empty... in almost every single real life twin otter landing video i watched on youtube, they get the stall horn to sound around touch down. i own and like the old aerosoft twin otter (still hoping there will be a discount for the new version for owners of the old version), and getting the stall horn to activate was also seeming unrealistically hard. maybe the flight dynamics were toned down for easier use?
  8. FSX saves the control setup in an XML file that will remember all different control devices by their ID (or names), so it will keep the data. in winXP you can find the file named "standard.xml" somewhere around... documents and settings/YOURNAME/application data/microsoft/fsx/controls/ basically the CONTROLS folder is in the same directory as your FSX.CFG. this standard.xml stores all the controller data and you can back that up. i have several subfolders in there with custom "standard.xml" file versions for different planes that i switch around before starting FSX. or you could look into FSUIPC to configure your hardware. for the brakes, you could try increasing the deadzone of the brakes axis!
  9. thanks for the HU - i missed this one completely, just read the feature list on the web-store page and it sounds pretty amazing with all the things simulated, i wonder how much all of that affects performance. since its some years old now, it might not put that much strain on my low end pc.
  10. my favorites are the real air scout package and the a2a accusim cub the scout has a pretty modern cockpit that you can even modify to an extent in an extra config tool. also the package actually gives you not only the tundra wheeled scout version, but also different variants (wheels, ambhibian) and 2 other models (trainer, acrobatic). it's a few years old, but to me it still looks good and the VC is nicely modelled (no flat instruments). also flies extremly good, sideslipping, stalling, rolls. perfect for bush flying the accusim a2a cub has a weak engine (slooooooow flying), lovely VC cockpit (even better textures with the many add-on liveries available freely) also comes with tundra wheels, normal wheels and floats versions and is extremly immersive while flying , the accusim package breathes life into that little taildragger and makes it a superb realistic plane to handle. no modern instruments but still good enough for some idaho backcountry bushflying on those tiny grass strips tho :)
  11. if you are at or below the undergraduate level. to my understanding that means, you have to be some sort of student to be legally allowed to use this version, if you are not, then its illegal. at least in germany you have to always show documents to prove that you are a student when you buy academic versions of software. but thats not really ontopic anyway :)
  12. Eligibility Academic licensing can be purchased for educational efforts at or below the undergraduate level. i don't think that covers a lot of the flight simmers, does it? :-O
  13. on the one hand i am happy to see a2a finally bringing the full accusim to the GA world, i love the cub (and i am not really that interested to fly combat planes within FSX). on the other hand i don't think its really pushing innovation or anything if 2 of the best FSX aircraft developers release the same model (maybe even in the more or less same timeframe). the dedicated flight simmers will buy both anyway and i am pretty sure both will have their very own advantages... all business reality (and company secrets) aside: the most innovation and win for the flightsim community would be a collaboration of the best developers on an individual aircraft model :) http://www.prepar3d.com/ LM's own version of FSX. some 3rd party FSX developers are releasing their stuff for it already, looks promising but a little expensive for private use.
  14. i have observed the opposite (on my low end system). my old config was: FPS locked within fsx to 60 and with external limiter to 30. this resulted in smooth stutterfree flying but very blurry ground within minutes. according to kostas FSX tweaking guide i locked the FPS within FSX to 25 (normally 30, but low end system), used the 1/2 vertical sync option in nvidia inspector and dropped the external limiter. endresult: smooth fps with occasional very short stutters and most importantly an enormous reduction of blurry ground textures. explanation (check kostas hardware guide for more indepth details): FSX will try to reach the FPS you set up in the options, if it cannot reach it, it will still try to pump its resources to reach the FPS and therefore doesn't have enough "time" to load ground textures faster. now if you lock the FPS to a number that your PC can easily reach, FSX will have more time to load the ground textures faster!
  15. i think you are looking for this: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=new_realistic_hud_fsx_hornet.zip&CatID=root&Go=Search if that link didnt work, search the avsim library for: new_realistic_hud_fsx_hornet.zip
  16. ah. i made an error. i don't own rxp, i just assumed the ini files reside maybe in each aircrafts simobjects folder. so if those files are somewhere else just change the directory if you try this method. :) hmmmmm. i really can't decide, i love my taildraggers but i feel like i could use a more modern GA for my hangar. decisions decisions... EDIT: thanks for the infos CoolP. it does sounds good that they offer different detail level models. my "100mb rule" is more or less just guesswork. i just noticed on my system that the more memory the airplane textures use up, the more and faster ground blurries i get :) i love the scout pack (it even gets more flight time now than my precious accusim cub) so real air already earned my trust :)
  17. i second javiers carrier package. the little extra effort to set it up with AI-CARRIERS is really worth the time, you can make the carrier appear anywhere anytime in all the available configurations, with full catapult/carrier landing capabilities. dinos goshawk goes perfectly together with the carrier, you can tune your landing system to the carrier and perform realistic approaches (the hud system is also available for the default f-18 in the avsim library).
  18. if you are on windows you can automate that. for example with the brilliant freeware text-editor notepad++. in this example you would just select "find in files" from the search menu, choose your simobjects folder, set the filter to RXPGNS.ini. set "find what" to TAWS=ON and "replace with" to TAWS=OFF :). this wonderful option helps alot when you edit various config files or want to sort out your aircraft configs :) ontopic curve: hows the memory footprint of the legacy... i am on a pretty low-end FSX system, i can enjoy orbx PNW with my favorite aircraft (dodosim 206, real air scout, accusim cub, carenado 185 bush) but when an aircraft has much above 100MB textures, it will greatly decrease my performance and increase blurries.
  19. in the aircraft.cfg find the [general] section, usually directly under the livery sections there should be something like this [General] atc_type=BOEING atc_model=B727 the boeing should already be in the default fsx voice-data not sure about the b727, but it might be present if you updated your voice-data with the voicepack community upgrades.
  20. is the file archived? sometimes different versions of packing/unpacking software have problems with files (very rare, but i have personally experienced this occasionally). depending on your operating system you might want to try something like 7zip (freeware) or a trial version of one of the many payware packing software packets (like winzip, winrar and so forth).
  21. my personal favorite at the moment is the real air scout package. the FDE feels really good (especially on short field landings in the tundra wheels version when the stall buffet sets in right before touchdown :) ). looks good, flies good and you can customize the cockpits on all versions individually. you can add a basic autopilot and eventhough there is no NAV/GPS switch in the cockpit if you map the function it works for the default 295 handheld GPS. i am currently brushing up my VOR navigation with this plane while enjoying the back country orbX idaho airports. lovely!
  22. for those who have google earth installed. you can switch to MARS and then start the basic built-in flight sim. supersonic bushflying! for a bit of fun if you have google earth installed: you can select MARS and then start the basic built-in flight simulator. :)
  23. again and again companies totally ignore things like streissand effect and bad press. the more they try to supress negative critics, the more "the internet" will read about those bad decisions. seems like they are off to a bad start, google search for "mad catz combat pilot" results in a lot of press websites, and the official homepage for the product on results page 2-3 :-O i also found something that is titled "combat pilot official trailer" which does look interesting, but seems a little amateurish on the production (you can see FSX screen messages popping up at the corners and kind of blurry textures). i recommend dino's goshawk + Javier Fernandez Nimtz + AI carriers for a really immersive carrier OPs setup completly free. and iris simulations have 2 military turbo-prop trainers in their freeware hangar too!
  24. a hella lotta off site landings and neck-breaking bushflying. TBA: Blorbx MARS red - bushflyers paradise! ontopic curve: watched it live on several ustream videos. great times!
  25. have you checked the actual signal the rudder pedals send within the calibration window? worst case scenario might be, that the pedals are broken. just fire up the windows calibration preferences, press the pedals around a little and check if the input is correct in the test tab display. if it is, then at least you can rule out a hardware defect.
