October 4, 201213 yr Bingo!! Thanks Jim The magic Spell.... SimObjectPaths.6=MyTraffic\Aircraft.. For future reference ,you still have to rebuild the bgl files(with the just flight tools) and make sure it matches your older fsx cfg..and be patient eventually it will happen! October 5, 201213 yr Hi Paul, Thought I'd just look in to check any progress. I've been trying to link Active Sky 2012 to FSX from my second computer, where I already have Flight Sim Commander and Plan G working through Wide FS. I followed the instructions in the AS2012 manual very closely for Simconnect, but it didn't work, and it completely screwed up my FSX. I did an Acronis restore, and I have FSX performing better than ever now, so there is a silver lining to my near disaster. DX10 rocks, as they say! I saw some advice in a forum, stating that Nvidia Inspector should be opened, a suitable profile loaded, and left running before and during any FSX session. Is this valid? I've only ever setup inspector, and left it at that. Thanks again. October 5, 201213 yr Author No - it's not valid, or you have a misunderstanding, Jim. Can you post the link so we can correct it? You are doing it absolutely as it's supposed to be done. October 5, 201213 yr Paul, Quick question regarding AA. I did a couple of tests with it and I lose between 8 and 10 FPS with AA on vs no AA. I suspect I'm pretty much maxed my setup now but I wonder if there is anything I could do to improve FPS with AA on. October 5, 201213 yr Author Kinda hard to say without your current fsx.cfg and NI settings, Chris. Post 'em here, and we'll see what we can do.. I'm off out for a couple of hours or so, so it'll be early this afternoon, OK? While we're at it - what are your proc speed (o/c) and your memory timings, as that can make a significant difference. October 7, 201213 yr See my FSX.CFG below Hi Chris, You have two duplicate Display entries in your config: [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M.0.0] Mode=1440x900x32 Anisotropic=1 AntiAlias=1 Should only have one since you have just one monitor on your laptop. Just delete one of them. In the Graphics section you have two entries for DX10 Preview. One entry says DX10 Preview is turned off: D3D10=0. The other one says it is turned on: D3D10=1. Under display, turn off WideViewAspect=True by changing True to False. You do not have a widescreen monitor. You have ForceWindowedVsync=1 enabled in the Graphics section. Be aware this only works in Windowed mode (according to Word Not Allowed's doc). DX10 Preview works best in full screen mode. I personally do not see the value of this setting but the setting is there if you want to fly in Windowed mode. Just some observations. Massive difference in performance with your suggestions. I didn't notice the duplicate entries for the display card at all nor did I see the duplicate entries for D3D10. I did my usual test around KHQM and KPAE and I'm really happy with the results. FPS is in the high teens to low 20's and I only have the occasional stutter. I didn't know DX10 Preview worked best in full-screen mode so maybe Paul could add that tip to the "How To" document as I can't recall seeing it in there. Many thanks for the help!! October 7, 201213 yr Hi Chris, Thanks. Think the 'fixes' are just a placebo but good you are seeing some performance gains. With your laptop, I don't think you'll see much more in performance. In regards to Anti-aliasing in your NI config, try lowering the SS to 2x Sparse Grid. This NI setting is a frame rate killer. According to Word Not Allowed's guide, 4x Sparse Grid SuperSampling completely reduces shimmering but reduces performance and 2xSparse Grid SS has some shimmering but increases performance. When you go out and but that fancy i7 3770K overclocked to 4.8GHz with a 680GTX and super fast memory, you can move up to 4x's or even higher. Under Texture Filtering, for AF Filtering, this should be set to User Defined/Off as you have 16X's enabled. You have it Application Controlled. This is a performance killer too and you might think about cutting that in half or even turning it off. With it enabled already in FSX, you are not going to see any change. This setting works better in DX9. Paul recommends the TBM be raised to 80 and that might work but it is a performance killer too. Just be aware. Try it both ways. If it doesn't do anything for you as far as performance or image quality, bring it back down to the default of 40. I'm glad to see you have modest scenery settings. Your LOD of 3.5 is a good compromise for performance. You can only see so far out in front of your aircraft anyway. With a 3.5 setting you'll see nice and clear quality textures immediately around your aircraft but you won't be able to see the Eagle flying 60 miles away.... October 7, 201213 yr OK just about to jump into the DX10 melee but have a question regarding which version of the "How to" document to use. I visitied this thread a short while back and downloaded the pdf. It shows "rev4 Sept 2012" on the first page. Upon revisiting this thread today, I noticed a new sticky pinned to the top of the forum dated 5th October. Am I correct in assuming that the pdf downloaded from that sticky today is a later more up to date version than the one I have already? Only it does not have any revision information. Many thanks in advance for the clarification and kind regards Stuart
October 7, 201213 yr Author Yep - it gets updated as new or better info comes in, Stuart - and "welcome" to the adventure, however it may turn out!! Both the pdf and the doc are the same. I have just put in a link to Tom's Hardware, regarding RodO's mention of an AA article which is the best article I have ever read on this subject. October 7, 201213 yr Need a little help here, just tried going thru the doc and Inspector setting up all as outlined in Steves DX10 doc, however my FSX now looks terrible, I've been thru Steves read me several times, and the DX10 Notes, nothing helps, gotta be doing something big time wrong here, any help would be appreciated.
