A "How-To-go-DX10" doc

Recommended Posts

Good Morning, Jymp, and "Welcome"!

First things first - can you post your pc's specs in your Member Profile, so that it shows up on the left side of the post - and then post (here) your fsx.cfg so we can get a better picture of what might be happening - OK?

So - tell us what "looks terrible" means, as it's kinda hard to know from our end...

Thanks,

pj

You can just open it with Notepad, go to "Edit" at the top ->"Select all" ->Copy, and then paste it into the post window. You can delete the [Trusted] part, just to make it smaller- OK?

Great post, Paul. Thanks for compiling these DX10 fixes. I didn't have the rain fix yet. Just applied it and it works a charm. No more "umbrella" effect for me. Thanks very much.

Speaking of which... in your PDF from post #8 in this thread under the "Rain Fix:" part, there's a tiny typo. It says "and make a backup copy of Rail40.fx" but it obviously should be Rain40.fx. The sentence below it has it written correctly. No biggie really but might confuse some people. Can't check the .doc version as I don't have Office installed on this laptop.

Nevertheless, kudos to you for your hard work, sir.

It shall be fixed in about two minutes...

Thanks for the thanks, Nuff..... It's a dirty, dirty job, but somebody has to do it.

OK - it's done, and I can blame Gizmo for this one!

Think the 'fixes' are just a placebo but good you are seeing some performance gains.

I think you are right here as it relates to FPS but the annoying stuttering is gone which is a massive improvement. I can live with low frame rates but the stutters were really a kill joy.

With your laptop, I don't think you'll see much more in performance.

Unfortunately, you're right here as well. Right now, I'm basically trying to get 1 fps here, another there but I'm pretty much at the limit of what I can accomplish with it. What I have noticed is that some planes are noticeably heavier than others. For my testing, I've been using the Carenado C182T and the RealAir Legacy. The legacy used to be my go-to plane for testing tweaks but the C182, at least on my machine, is proving heavier on FPS. Maybe the G1000?

In regards to Anti-aliasing in your NI config, try lowering the SS to 2x Sparse Grid.

Done and testing

When you go out and but that fancy i7 3770K overclocked to 4.8GHz with a 680GTX and super fast memory, you can move up to 4x's or even higher.

Soon I hope....

Under Texture Filtering, for AF Filtering, this should be set to User Defined/Off as you have 16X's enabled. You have it Application Controlled. This is a performance killer too and you might think about cutting that in half or even turning it off.

Done and testing..

Paul recommends the TBM be raised to 80 and that might work but it is a performance killer too. Just be aware. Try it both ways. If it doesn't do anything for you as far as performance or image quality, bring it back down to the default of 40.

I'll be testing this as well

I'm glad to see you have modest scenery settings. Your LOD of 3.5 is a good compromise for performance. You can only see so far out in front of your aircraft anyway. With a 3.5 setting you'll see nice and clear quality textures immediately around your aircraft but you won't be able to see the Eagle flying 60 miles away....

One thing my adventures in life and FSX tweaking has taught is the value of compromise.

I'm amazed that an application was released so many years ago is still proving so difficult to run at high settings on modern hardware.

On to flyin

That's for sure! I've never seen so many so-called 'tweaks' to get FSX to run with the highest settings possible. Not sure what we are trying to see on the ground but we want to be able to see a crisp and clear ground or airport. With your laptop, you should still have very good graphics. Now you need to get out there and check it all out.

Best regards,

Jim

Could it be possible the Shader Fix didn't find the .cfg, thats why it not working ?

Then perhaps you can blame Gizmo again, because it's currently corrected to "make a backup copy of Rainl40.fx" in the PDF. It should be "rain40.fx".

But I'm feeling guilty for nitpicking, Paul. It's really irrelevant. You won't believe how happy I am with the rain "umbrella" being fixed now. Thanks to YOUR post, Paul.

It's possible that you didn't delete the

"C:\Users\{your username here}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX\Shaders10" folder, Jymp. This is the folder which is copied from that new main folder (Steve's), and it then becomes the one used by FSX. If it doesn't get deleted first - then nothing will change....

I need you around, Nuff. The pdf is created from the .doc, so it's in the .doc as well. (I looked).... (mutter, mutter) .... There, fixed... I'll put another one in there, just to see if you're reading it!!!
