September 10, 201213 yr How does your sim model compare? I came across some interesting discussions on the pilot forums regarding this and the consensus was the 737 and 727!! I'm currently working on a new cockpit update for DM's VC10 which amongst other hot updates involves not only recreating compressor sound as heard from the cockpit but also the sound of the avionics and aircon fans. The VC10 actually has a quiet cockpit in that the engines even at full tilt can only be heard as a background noise. The aircon and avionics fans almost drown the engines out. Sitting away from the windows and you hear little or no wind noise. Concorde in comparison had no wind noise "when the visor was up" but its avionics and fans were very loud. One has to say that creating the sound files is a bit of a nightmare. One starts off with a perfectly good and clear sound recording but when played through the sim everything is mushy and horrid. September 10, 201213 yr Good question actually. We build silent PCs to then be able to 'enjoy' some screaming winds and turbines. Yeah! By the way, takes some time to get used to flying sim planes with little or no engine noise, right? No feel, just some instrument showing acceleration and then no roar to help. Makes me wanna jump into the Maddog now. Same as you, I've read a lot on noisy 727 and 737 cockpits due to the winds. But I also saw the 747 getting mentioned. 'Which plane are you flying?' 'Sorry, say again?'
September 10, 201213 yr Author 'Which plane are you flying?' 'Sorry, say again?' I'm preparing another update for DM's VC10. Which includes a split system oxygen panel (with real emergencies), smoke detection (with real smoke), thrust augmenters, new thrust reverser regime, new daylit panel etc etc. I've also included some authentic cockpit warnings and ambient sounds not previously present plus the current problem which has side tracked me namely trying to get the real engine sound as heard from the cockpit to also sound in the sim. September 10, 201213 yr It's the enthusiasts which drive our hobby. Seems like you are one of them. Sounds good on the plans with the added features.
September 10, 201213 yr Author There's a current topic about depressurisation and hypoxia here http://forum.avsim.net/topic/384894-a-question-regarding-pressurization/ My updates do the whole show with depressurisation, finite oxygen, and even a simulated hypoxia!! September 10, 201213 yr I know that video the one guy has posted, with the ATC talking the pilot down. Scary stuff! I only know the sims hypoxia from the A2A planes. Expect some crews of mine having been close to the edge.
September 11, 201213 yr Are there any silent planes around? I mean, from the pilot's viewpoint, not that it actually is very silent on the deck at some 300+kts.

September 11, 201213 yr Are all the 737's considered loud or is it just the classic generation? I would if anybody would be able to setup a speaker system to mimic aircraft sounds to their exact level in the sim. Tim HeptinstallAirports I have been to: Doncaster Robin Hood Airport EGCN, East Midlands (EGNX), Manchester (EGCC), Tenerife South/Reina Sofia Airport (GCTS), Fuerteventura Airport (GCFV), New York John F Kennedy International Airport (KJFK)Aircraft I have travelled on: 737-800 (Thomson), 737-800WL (Thomson, Ryanair), 757-200 (Thomson, Thomas Cook), 757-200WL (Thomson, Thomas Cook, American Airlines), De Havilland Dragon Rapide (Classic Wings G-AIYR). Currently studying Aeronautical Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University (UK). Applying for medicals to start PPL soon. Message me if you would like to share stories/progress.
September 12, 201213 yr Once you have experienced what it is like to sit in between two Wright R-2600's in the cockpit of a B-25, all jetliner cockpits are as quiet as a mouse... cheers, jan Jan
September 12, 201213 yr How does the sim model compare with the real a/c? The feelthere erj's sounds are a bit generic sounding, with too much 'engine' sounds. The old freeware erj panel and plane by Bill Grabowski and Nick Botamer had a more accurate soundset that was made where you really only hear the wind noise.
September 12, 201213 yr Author As far as engine sounds in the sim go the only realistic ones I've come across are those for the Lancaster Bomber. Des Braban who did those got it to a T inside and out. The only thing missing is the excessive vibration felt by the crew!!! What annoys me most is that a perfectly good sound recording even playing properly through FS Sound Studio, when being replayed in the sim itself is nothing but a wooshy windy noise, totally unrealistic. It's also quite difficult to get the correct balance of sounds. For example in my VC10 updates the engines in reality can barely be heard inside unless at full tilt and even then they have to compete with the avionics and aircon fans. The interior sounds as they stand (in the original model) are the equivalent of sticking your head out of the window! Yes i know one can reduce the volume slider but that reduces the volume of everything else in the sound.cfg as well. September 12, 201213 yr I think the PMDG JS4100 is pretty loud. Super loud actually. I have to turn down the engine sounds quite a ways when flying online to hear ATC. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk William Sequeira
September 12, 201213 yr Many years ago I had a flight in the rear seat of a Hawker Sea Fury T20. Now that was noisy - sitting behind some 2400hp of a radial engine! Gerry Howard
