September 18, 201213 yr "Microsoft" announced today the "end of support" for FSX. After closing the door on the MS FLIGHT project and it's dedicated users ( your's truly included, and a great fan of it... ), this is what was expected. So... be ready for new guests! I hope so!!!! X-Plane will only get better! September 18, 201213 yr >-1. Nope when FSX is gone, 20yrs from now and still have more to offer, I'll hang up my yoke. I'll be dead anyways. I just mentioned this would popup here. No I dont believe this announcement will have the profound effect the closing of FLIGHT had on its users to find alternatives. We, FSX users, are a tight and well supported community. P.S... Im a Prepar3D user also.
September 18, 201213 yr Author P.S... Im a Prepar3D user also A good option for those who invested on FSX and will sooner or later be able to port most of their add-ons to that platform too. And there will be v2.0 too, although it will probably get more and more military-oriented... September 18, 201213 yr Support is over. Support from Microsoft was limited anyway and most of the actual support goes on at forums like Avsim. I'm not seeing how this will in any way affect the current FSX users considering the product is still readily available for download, the platform is still supported by 3d party developers, and the user base is already very large. Now with P3D becoming more and more viable, we're seeing the possible life extension of the engine. Competition is a good thing. Let's keep our fingers crossed that there's always a of couple options or more. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
September 18, 201213 yr I do find it a bit sad. I have had every version of MSFS since the mid 1980's probably version 2 although it wasn't called that back then. I ran it on a TRS 80 Model III, in black and white. Bruce Artwick was still a big part of the simulator. In fact I was still using it when I first started with X-Plane the version 9.5, so I am a very recent convert to X-Plane.I now use both, although recently mostly X-Plane. Nothing lasts forever, it seems. Donald E. Donovan Flying is the 2nd greatest thrill known to man The 1st is landing.
September 18, 201213 yr Author I used version 2 as well, running on AMIGA, and then later or an old MAC... Moved to ATP, then AS2 and fs4,5,6,...X and MS FLIGHT - my prefered flightsim until then. In this path many others played their roles... Propilot, Propilot99, FU, FU2, FU3, Fly!, Fly!2, ETC Protrainner(derived from Propilot) , IFT-Pro, RTS-Pro, Aerowinx PS1, FlightGear (still use that one whenever a new version is released), ELITE v7 and then v8, SFS, SW, Condor,... X-Plane10 is my last adoption, and I'm really glad I chose it... September 19, 201213 yr "Microsoft" announced today the "end of support" for FSX. After closing the door on the MS FLIGHT project and it's dedicated users ( your's truly included, and a great fan of it... ), this is what was expected. So... be ready for new guests! I hope so!!!! X-Plane will only get better! Maybe. It's certainly one of the possibilities. But people are still using fs2004 as well. People need a compelling reason to switch, and I am not sure desperation is good enough..... We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... September 19, 201213 yr I started with FS4 and the Aircraft & Scenery designer, so while I don't go all the way back to the beginning, I was certainly in the 16 color, Dos-based stone age of FS. At the end of the day, it all comes down to what the individual derives enjoyment from. FSX will enjoy continued life as long as great companies like ORBX and PMDG support the platform with their products. X-Plane 10 is really the switch of that platform from niche to mainstream, and so hopefully will grow as third parties look into developing for it. Aerosoft has shown that, at least for scenery, crossover development works. The 777 and CRJ before it shows that serious aircraft simulation is doable. Meanwhile, PMDG's 777 for FSX is sure to be a tremendous product in every sense of the word. Bottom line? Let not your heart be troubled. Regardless of what platform you use and enjoy, simulation is not dead! September 19, 201213 yr Have to 1000% agree with ZachLW on this one for sure... Recent true story...my Old Pentium D PC Finally Fried.. After much gnashing of teeth... I ordered a new one... Exponentially more powerful and less money than I paid for my old one... By far!!! I mean BY FAR!! more powerful So while waiting for its arrival... I took the time and went through all my Software keys and files and I have a bundle tied up in FSX... Close to $1200 in stuff I bought but hung up for poor performance... So.. as the hardware got better I simply went on with what worked... The new PC should run everything I ever bought for FSX... I am glad... Thrilled.... But to reconnect with his point... There are many like me who are ready to bag the "hope" of MS Flight...Deal with no FSX support, and re-emerge into an era where FINALLY I have hardware that will run this thing!! :P  FSX or P3D Jeff NorthLink VA - Commerce & Community in Northern North America!
September 19, 201213 yr I really don't see the argument. IMO the support ending scenario changes nothing. Bob Officially retired
September 19, 201213 yr Support is over. Support from Microsoft was limited anyway and most of the actual support goes on at forums like Avsim. Amen to that.
September 19, 201213 yr "Microsoft" announced today the "end of support" for FSX. I thought the end of support started in January 2009: No more development, patches or service packs since then. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21981 Does this mean FSX customers will now no more be able to activate their product ? The free trial is still available: http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimulatorx/downloads.html Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
September 19, 201213 yr I believe there's a steady trickle of FSers moving to XP10 but I think 10X as many try it, don't like it and stick with what they have (personally I think XP10 is worth taking the time to get to know). The reasons for that have been discussed already, suffice to say that studying the competition and implementing those FS features that are missing or poorly implemented would go a long way to winning over the FS community. LR would do well to stop constantly tweaking the flight model code and engine parameters and lock down that part of XP10. They could then spend the rest of the v10 development cycle bringing up the aforementioned missing or broken bits up to speed (once x64 is out of the way), which in turn would mean increased sales further along the line (assuming increased sales is what they seek...).
September 20, 201213 yr Competition is a good thing. Let's keep our fingers crossed that there's always a of couple options or more. Totally agree, we don't want LR to relax. We the "end users" are the ones that really benefit from it.
