October 4, 201213 yr Sorry to bombard everyone with questions, but I heard that the vendor I'm buying from will have a huge holiday sale, so I need to buy soon to save. I will be getting a 3770K and a 660TI, what do you guys think the best watercooler is? I am currently looking at a Corsair H60. ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee

October 4, 201213 yr Author http://forum.avsim.n...e-for-fsx-link/ That's great. But, I don't want to spend 150 on a cooler, because money doesn't grow on trees. Could anyone give me a recommendation other than that? Thanks. ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee
October 4, 201213 yr The Corsair H70 would be a better choice. Slightly more expensive but a tangible increase in cooling performance due to thicker rad. Also, I see that you are building an Ivy Bridge system. I'd strongyly reccomend that you follow this guide in order to dramatically reduce temperatures on your CPU.

Okay, the vendor I'm going through doesn't offer an H60, how easy is it to install one yourself? And, yes, I will follow the de-lid guide. Stupid Intel for using a total crap thick TIM. October 4, 201213 yr Okay, the vendor I'm going through doesn't offer an H60, how easy is it to install one yourself? Very simple... particularly if you have a motherboard tray that slides out of the case. Just make sure you orient the backplate correctly (there's a youtube vid which the poor Corsair guy has it on sideways) and you might want a second person to hold the radiator whilst you screw down the cooler to the cpu. Much easier that third hand helping.

Just so I don't have to buy a cooler I won't use just so I could put the H100 in! ORBX- the way to go Sincerely, John McGee

Don't this non-high-end water coolers not perform much better than a decent air cooler? October 5, 201213 yr Don't this non-high-end water coolers not perform much better than a decent air cooler? Yes, that's essentially true. There are other benefits though, the largest in my opinion being the reduction of weight hanging on your motherboard in the form of a massive heatsink.

Also, a water-block and small radiator is MUCH more aesthetically appealing than a massive, view obstructing Noctua ND14.

I may to go w/ something like the H100 if that's a good pick for my next machine, but the main reason for me is to reduce noise. Right now if you have followed my postings on cooling I just leave the case cover off and my thru-the-wall 8K BTU A/C unit hits it w/ low-flow rate cooled dehumidified air. Since I dialed back my overclock to 3.8Ghz I don't even need the A/C to run--just run the fan. Sometimes if the room needs cooled in summer here I will hit the A/C and then will run higher overclocks as desired. Since I often use stereo headset for sound I don't hear the unit running at all. If I had a quieter solution tho I might not use the phones as much. October 5, 201213 yr I may to go w/ something like the H100 if that's a good pick for my next machine, but the main reason for me is to reduce noise. With the H100, there is little cooling performance difference when running your fans at max vs running the fans at idle. The H100 is silent for me and temps are in the high 50s and low 60s at max load.
October 5, 201213 yr The H100 has gotten lots of negative feedback online for noise issues. I have the Antec 920 which is well made, does a great job cooling, but when the cpu is under very high load for periods of time the fans ramp up to 39db, and it's annoying. This doesn't happen while I'm in FSX, but it does in other games. About the best consistently good reviews I've seen for build quality, performance and noise is the Thermaltake Water2.0, which is on sale now at NewEgg for about $100 after rebate. Good luck with your choice. It's all a crapshoot more or less. - Jev McKee, AVSIM member since 2006. October 5, 201213 yr but when the cpu is under very high load for periods of time the fans ramp up to 39db, and it's annoying. That is why I use the AI Suite to tweak my fans. The H100 fans for me hardly EVER leave idle unless the temps are at 75-80.
