Lost all data because of crash. no backup and downloaded PMDG software

you cant be seriuse? the majority of buyers are no where near as anal as some of the geeks that are on here 24/7. I can grantee that the majority just want to fly and some who have the time will spend it learning the manual

I am serious. What, do you want it pointed it out in red ink, size 72 font? It says several times (if I remember correctly) that the download link expires. You don't need to be anal to spot it. If you miss that, I worry for your future well being. No joke. Contracts can be full of tricky things...

thats a big assumption that the rest of the non geek community would even know what a back up is and how it actually works . . Its an even bigger assumption to suggest they would ever bother to visit PMDG.COM unless its for support but by then of course its cough up the $$ to have access to what is yours anyway.

It's really not. It's 2012. Most computers now have some sort of feature for backup. Even more external hard drive manufacturers include a backup tool, and even a scheduler so you can set it and forget it if you want. If you don't have the knowledge to back up your computer, what are you doing in the front of a study-sim-level 737?

How is it an assumption that they've been to PMDG.com [sic]?

That's where they went to buy it, right? I think all of the other stores only sell CD copies, and if that's the case, then it wouldn't be an issue (unless he/she lost the CD, which just about any vendor is going to say you're SOL). I could be wrong, but wherever they bought it is likely going to have some limitation on the link provided to avoid piracy.

Cough up the money for what is yours anyway?

No. Sorry. You need to get your law straight. What you're saying is essentially the same as me going to a store, buying something, losing it, and then going back and saying "well I lost it, but give me another because I paid the money for it just the other day." Sorry Charlie. No dice.

In the industry of software, it's slightly more grey than my example, but it's essentially up to the manufacturer. As an example, if I buy something from the iTunes store, I can re-download with no time limit (I think). They have the means to handle that because they serve a worldwide audience that is not a niche market sector. PMDG doesn't have that advantage. Sure, they're worldwide, but they don't have the same market side, despite being worldwide.

Look at many of the other developers of FS products and none of the large ones make you pay for extended downloads within the same market of buyers. The PMDG downloads are also tiny compared to gigabytes of scenery addons etc that you can download multiple times if needed. ORBX, and Flight1, are prime examples. IMO, it's just better customer service.

They're just different business models. I can see how you'd think it's better customer service. With Flight1, it's nice to know I don't have to keep backups (though I do it anyway).

On the other hand, think of all of the bandwidth they could save if they managed the downloads, instead of placing them on the public side and just managing their activation.

Either way, it's a lot cheaper to just drag the file onto an external, or burn it to a disc. The money saved on their end generally translates to money saved on our end.

Wow. I sure am glad i backup my backup, lest i get branded an "Idiot", because sometimes i do make mistakes.

Well according to another 'contributor' to this thread that must put you in the anal geek camp....

you cant be seriuse? the majority of buyers are no where near as anal as some of the geeks that are on here 24/7. I can grantee that the majority just want to fly and some who have the time will spend it learning the manual...blah blah blah....thats a big assumption that the rest of the non geek community would even know what a back up is and how it actually works.

So hows that for 'branding'?

I know which one I am happy to be branded...yes...that's right the anal one who backs up all of his downloads to removable media, manages to keep all of his electronic receipts for all the stuff bought for FS in the same place & also carefully reads the product manuals to manage his expectations & to learn how to fly the thing too....as Kyle said...it must be a generational thing.

To all you fellow 'anal geeks' out there in AVSIM Forum land....whatever your age, gender, race, creed or religion...I salute you as a kindred spirit!

+1 on the "generational thing".

IMHO it is common (and widely talked about) knowledge that hard drives are mechanical and as such WILL fail. It is not a question of "IF", it's a question of "WHEN". It is also common knowledge that gremlins do creep into electronics and wreak havoc with data. I'm sure everyone is aware of our old friend, Murphy.

Just as your car WILL fail eventually (whether it's a Zastava or a Rolls) and just as our airplanes have back-ups of back-up systems and are triple-redundant, I fail to see why anyone who, as Kyle says, is "in the front of a study-sim-level 737" would not be expected to have the basic know-how to manage an inevitable computer event. It's the sensible thing to do. And if we expect that PMDG, or any other developer, for that matter, should have our downloaded software available for re-download that implies that we are aware and expect that they (the developers) keep their own back-ups of their software. Why wouldn't we use the same foresight and safeguard our own purchases?

I buy a new TV, take it home and enjoy the experience. Then I go to work the next day, someone breaks into my apartment, takes a shining to my my brand new uber flat-screen TV and walks off with it. Do I go running to the store complaining that I got ripped off and they should hand me a replacement? I think not. I either make sure my house is securely locked up or I've added my new TV to my list of insured items (for which I pay a premium). Either way I'm covered.

I don't see why we shouldn't apply this logic to our online purchases.

I think I am going to add this one to my "quote bag"....

What I was trying to say In my previous post was that sure the Op should back up his purchases (especially download), but I don't think calling people idiots is called for.

I noted this was the OP's first post. Bet we impressed the heck out of him.

but I don't think calling people idiots is called for

Was anybody actually called an idiot directly?...all I see is some candid, clear & constructive advice then all of a sudden at post #4 it goes south with the anti-Kyle brigade (anti plain speech perhaps?)...the rest is then the usual blather (yes I am guilty too).

Lose your PMDG download and it costs you $5 to get it back. If the same event deletes all your wedding photos, how will you get them back? How will you explain the loss to your other half? Like everybody here, I have made mistakes that resulted in losing stuff I can not replace. Like most people here, I expect to lose stuff again and now take steps to minimise the damage it will cause me.

If you do not want to pay the recovery charge, do not put yourself in the position where you need the recovery service. Your choice!

I agree. If your data doesn't exist in at least 3 places, it doesn't exist at all.

The NGX setup files will fit on one ten cent blank CD. It just seems automatic to me that you would put it somewhere else as soon as you install the airplane in case you ever have to reinstall. I mean, even if you could get it downloaded again for free, why would you want to bother?
