FPS Frienly 3.)Accurate & 4.)Enjoyable list the good's and the bads wich one takes it ??? ^_^ Any of your opinions to help me choose would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
November 1, 201213 yr In my opinion first choice for fs9 users is ASE.Active Sky Evolution. Active Sky is second choice. Great old weather generator. I don't own REX, but as I read around, it is not good for weather as ASE. Regards Edin
November 1, 201213 yr I use REX for textures and ASE for weather as I find that I prefer ASE's weather. I'm sure others have different opinions, so I guess it's just a question of whichever you prefer. Gavin Barbara Over 10 years here and AVSIM is still my favourite FS site :-)
November 1, 201213 yr Author My thoughts AS6 1.} AS6 weather A much lighter utility and does a really good job with weather (I prefer it over Rex weather engine, Rex is a bit sluggish if you ask me) ASE 2.) I just recently purchased ASE and To be honest I find it to be more enjoyable, the best feature for me is the integrated Map feature that allows you to actually visualize the overcasts clouds. Thats a Total Plus for me, Just the other day we encounterd Hurricane Sandy I really enjoyed Flying through the storm and actually watching it live using ASE Map Feature. REX REX Weather Engine, Not so good, I find myself clicking more then once on it interface just to get it to zoom in during a flight, the map isn't so great. if you want to shut something off, again i find myself double clicking, and it is not accurate, At one point i was flying over Philadelphia INT Airport and it was raining?? when i checked the news the skies were clear, No rain whatsoever another thing is that it interrupts flights its always causing FS9 to reload when regenerating weather conditions, very disappointed with REX weather Engine. (Then again everyone has there own opinions) I Highly Recommend AS6 or ASE over REX anytime
November 3, 201213 yr Commercial Member ASE for weather, REX for visuals, hands down. Kyle Weber (Private Pilot, ASEL; Flight Test Engineer)Check out my repaints and downloads, all right here on AVSIM
November 3, 201213 yr I have AS6.5, REX and ASE. My first choice as a weather engine would be AS6.5... but it no longer works properly with FS9 and is no longer supported (no more updates) So I was forced to purchase ASE which I think is the best FS9 weather engine for now ....but I dislike my screen flashing when it updates the sim. I was hoping that OpusFSX would make a new weather engine for FS9 but it is not looking too promising. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/389562-fs9-compatibility/ My FS Videos
November 3, 201213 yr I use Actice Sky 6.5 for both FS2004 and FSX (+REX). Works perfectly! Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
November 3, 201213 yr I was hoping that OpusFSX would make a new weather engine for FS9 but it is not looking too promising. I hope they do Ed,because it's a great product. DIMITRI
November 3, 201213 yr How do you mean AS6.5 no longer works properly for fs9? http://forum.avsim.net/topic/368701-asv6/ My FS Videos
November 4, 201213 yr Hi Ed If you want, I can write you a gawk/batch program which will remove those extra slashes "///" so you can still use AS6.5. Let me know if you're interested. RJ
November 5, 201213 yr I didn't realize there was a issue with AS6.5 either. That said, I never use HiFI weather servers for two reasons. 1. I don't want to be dependent on a service I can't control. 2. My Flight PC is not connected to the internet. I download real world metars and upper wind data from more reliable sources and then create my own AS6.5 weather file using gawk. AS6.5 like FS9 will never become "End of life" until I decide. I would guess people that don't see this problem are not using metars that are contaminated with the slashes "///". I just wrote a very quick batch file that uses gawk and removes all the slashes from the weather file if anyone is interested. RJ
November 5, 201213 yr Like RJ I prefer my Flight PC to not be connected to the internet....but it can be and is when I need to d/l real weather or activate addons. The main and HUGE difference between AS6.5 and ASE. After I d/l a slice of real weather I then input my flight plan. AS6.5 would create the weather all along my flight plan to my destination and then I would shut down AS6.5 ASE will only create the weather up to about 400miles out from my start point so I have to keep it active and let it update the weather as I fly along. (My screen would flash every time it updated) The problem I started to get with AS6.5 was when I tried to input a flightplan it would take forever to try to create the weather. I sent an email to HiFi and was told this is a known problem and they were not going to fix it....I would have to update to ASE. Thankyou for the offer RJ.....I may well take you up on it. I am used to going to make a cup of tea while ASE starts up for the mo' My FS Videos
