November 21, 201213 yr Sometimes I just get burned out from flying. Take a break. Then weeks later maybe watch a flying video on YouTube (there are tons of real life ones) then "get the bug" and get back into it. That happens to me too. About two months ago, while suffering from temporary FSX burnout, I started a refight of the Battle of Corunna on the PC. Next day, the FSX bug bit again - hard. Soult's and Moore's men are still waiting for me to get back to them. I can imagine them sitting around on their knapsacks, looking at pocket watches and tut-tutting... H
November 21, 201213 yr Going back to VOR & NDB navigation is always a great thing to do, whether in a C210 or an old 727. So much more fun to plan your route, approach, etc. and especially when you don't use another other navigational aids except what is standard equipment on your aircraft. Mark CYYZ
November 21, 201213 yr I have a round robin relationship with my PC simulation.... Fly FSX for a while, get bored with moving people/freight/whatever, fly DCS for a while, get bored with moving mud, play ArmA II for a while, get bored with invading fictitious countries. Rinse and repeat. Point is I never let myself get too sick of any one genre. I just give it a rest, do something else for a while and come back to it. I am always a little rusty at whatever I have not done for a while thus giving myself the opportunity to have some fun reacclimating.
November 21, 201213 yr I tend to go back and forth...I'll fly airliners for a while, then switch to GA for a while, then back to airliners etc...depends on my mood/available time sometimes too. November 22, 201213 yr Author I think it's not really a matter of burnout, or boredom as such. For me it's trying to do too many things, I've been trying to get everything and anything from my simming - this is hard when trying to lead a real life as well!! I've seen a few posts from people who've had to quit altogether, were addicted, or found it was impacting family life etc whatever. I never want that sort of thing to happen to me. The warning signs are increasing frustration at not being able to fit in the simming I want to do. Instead of continuing in frustration and trying to make time (staying up late etc), I'm going to have to cut something out to be sustainable long term. But I recognise I don't have time to keep up all these different sims/aircraft. I can't give up GA, and I can't give up combat sims they are too much fun. But giving up airliners is a win/win, I can remove that part that requires all the extra study outside the sim, and remove the most time consuming style of simming, allowing me to make better use of my time. I know there are some people that fly exclusively airliners, or exclusively NGX etc. I think that is where they are well suited really, as the knowledge is kept up to date and their pre-flight and flows can be executed very quickly with practice. This is fine for people who really love flying these big planes, but for me while they are nice to admire the software engineering behind it, and really fun to takeoff and land, I don't have the "love" for them like many others do. It's a hard decision as I'm on of those "if it ain't realistic it ain't worth flying" guys, and I can't make myself compromise on any steps in the process. But I can choose aircraft that have less process
November 22, 201213 yr Yeah, it can be a bit of a drag. I dont think I have started my sim once this month. When I feel the need to quench my aviation thirst I usually just fire up Euroscope for a session of online ATC. It's so easy to start up, just open the program, log on and thats it basically. It doesn't require me to bring out my sim hardware, do extensive preflight planning, start up the million of addon programs I need like weather, pilot client, fsbuild, VA ACARS etc etc. vatsim s3

Not enough time. When I started out 1.5 years ago, I went gang buster and bought the PMDG MD11, Maddog, PMDG 747 and the Level-D 767, mainly because I was fascinating with these aircrafts and want to have the most realistic simulator possible. I did not know what I got myself into After a while, the automation and system that are needed by the real world commercial requirement kind of making you as a pilot mundane and boring. First of all, these machines need two people to operate, secondly you don't "fly" these big boys, you "fly" the systems. I still like the MD-11 and the NGX, everything else have been taken off my HD. I mainly fly the Lancair Legacy, Mustang Citation and A2A Cubs, easy to setup and go fly. I like the short haul route of the NGX, so once in a while, I would hop back in for a flight that does not last more than 2 hrs. It's a hobby, not work! If it looks like work, it's a clue that it's too complex. But I recognise I don't have time to keep up all these different sims/aircraft. November 22, 201213 yr Tiered of flying Airliners nah...never! There are different ways you can fly them you know, it's not only A to B with FMS. Bring up some Real World SID's STAR's & App. plates & fly some non precision approaches manually, with only raw data (no FMS w L/Vnav no AP & FD) just using the "rose". While you at it bring the weather to minima with x-wind gusts & throw in some emergency's like eng. failure, cargo fire, A&B hyd. failure etc.... That's what you get on checkrides in the airlines. Af course this applies to GA's too & can be very challenging:) Kind regardsR.G
November 22, 201213 yr You can also go to 1 day in the week for flying. I tend to do this every friday evening. So plan during the week, and fly then only. This way I can build up the tension :-)

This way I can build up the tension :-) Yes, good suggestion. I'm down to 2 evenings per week, and find I look forward to and enjoy it more. Being retired, I could sim day and night (my wife may not agree!), but you do get bored with too much of anything good - even Golf! 2 evenings a week, and I never get bored. George Retired RW ATP (DHC8-1/2/3, B737-3/4/5, A320), 5240h... now permanently grounded by Diabetes. www.diabetes.org.uk
November 22, 201213 yr Author I got the A2A civilian Mustang yesterday, that has some good range for cross country and my RXP430 works in the VC so I think that will be a good IFR replacement that's more fun. Still is a great systems simulation but they are quicker to operate and no FMS means no fiddling in a keypad
