December 23, 201213 yr Anyone have any ideas on how to taxi at a consistent speed. I have the default throttle control settings and usually taxi by increasing speed but speed will usually increase too high and then I have to decrease speed until I'm almost at a standstill. I can't get the throttle to taxi at a consistent speed. Any good throttle settings or programs that would help me? SJED
December 23, 201213 yr It takes more power to get the airplane moving than it does to keep moving. In a 172 for instance, it can take 1300-1500 rpm to start moving; once rolling, you could reduce to 1000 rpm or less. Your mileage may vary, but that is the technique you'll want to experiment with. It's just a matter of finding the right numbers, and it works for airplanes of all sizes.
December 23, 201213 yr Slam the throttles to the firewall and takeoff on the taxiway this is flight simulator not taxi simulator! Haha jk mate, but honestly its that way in real planes changing throttle while taxi is normal. ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. Type Ratings B-737, ERJ-190,ERJ-170
December 23, 201213 yr Think of a real world situation. First in a jet one has to apply breakaway thrust in order to get the a/c moving. Depending on its weight thereafter usually idle thrust is all that is necessary. If one is going uphill then it's necessary to apply more thrust. Conversely going downhill one has to apply brakes. You can't match engine throttle and ground roll in the same way as in a car. (The car engine directly drives the wheels-the a/c engines do not). December 23, 201213 yr Well i learn a few things from the Airbus Extended Release depending on the weight of the aircraft you can set N1 engine power to 10% or 20% give it a little time to start moving, once you start moving if you notice that you are going to fast just decrease a little more to 10 or 5%. Hope this help you! December 23, 201213 yr It's pretty much what the previous posters said, but there's one thing I can recommend (works only with default AP logic, NOT with high system fidelity!): Set your preferred taxi speed, activate Autothrottle and select SPD hold. The plane will now keep the selected speed all by itself. I did that back when I didn't have a joystick/throttle. I know it's not realistic at all, but it is indeed easy, when you have no possibility of precisely setting thrust manually. One thing I know is that the default 737 will taxi somewhere around 10-15kts at 38-40% N1 with default payload settings, but usually I just slowly increase thrust until my plane starts moving. Then I reduce it again, and watch my speed. In case I'm going too slow, I just increase power again. I hope this is of help, Flo Florian
December 23, 201213 yr It took me quite a while to master taxiing in MicroSoft's flight simulators. It does take an unrealistic amount of throttle to get most aircraft moving in Flight Sim. With turboprops that have condition levers or some type of control to reduce engine power on the ground, it is best to use it. Applying engine anti-ice systems can also help with controlling taxi speed with turbo props. Piston-props seem to have fewer problems in MSFS and I can't really say much about jets as I've yet to move past aircraft with props. December 23, 201213 yr Author I'll check out the groundhandling gauge. Do you know if it will work with addon aircraft? SJED

I can't get the throttle to taxi at a consistent speed. Any good throttle settings or programs that would help me? I've found that during the taxi I have to make constant tiny changes to the throttle, in any aircraft. It helps that I use a custom gauge that displays ground speed to the 1/10 knot, e.g. 11.9, so I can see immediately if it's increasing or decreasing. Eventually I find the sweet spot and can taxi at the same speed until I have to make a turn or the wind changes. An easy way to see how fast you are going without a gauge is to watch the progressive taxi arrows. At 12 knots the base of the arrow passes under the windscreen at zero seconds, the point of the arrow at 1 second, the base of the next arrow at 2 seconds, etc. This doesn't help your consistent speed problem, but with practice you can fine tune the throttle to get the right speed. Just remember, tiny changes. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
December 24, 201213 yr Throttle position during taxi depends on a/c weight and gradient. Try 62%n2 that will allow braking to reduce speed and allow the a/c to quicken without having to constantly fiddle with the throttle. One should only do that for tight turns or climbing slopes.
