Wow! Big Difference with DX-10

Featured Replies

Does anyone else get the FSX splashscreen momentarily on the aircraft textures?

Yes, not always, but often !

In general, the display is also slower.

But fps are 30-40% better with Dx10

You will have to live with this if you have high settings in the FSX.cfg/display driver settings. DX10 trying to render. I see it occasionally and not an issue for me.

Whoops! After sitting at the gate typing this post, I just got an OOM error. That is still not bad though. A big improvement over what I had.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with FSX and DX10. Glad you are enjoying your flights and seeing less OOM's. DX10 handles GPU/CPU resources a bit better and you might be right that it is solving some of your OOM's but sounds like you have a lot running along with FSX too. That's probably not good. In fact there are a lot of people who invest in programs that turn off some Windows services so more resources can be used for FSX during a session. The more modern computer systems do not require this though (or shouldn't). Having your AI higher than 40% is not good either as it is a known resource hog. You were wise though to discover this and lower the settings. I hope you continue to enjoy!

Best regards,

Jim

The FSX splash screen is gone in Steve's latest release. There are other changes in the How-To doc, too, reflecting fixes which may be coming and including a link to Phil Taylor's blog re: Acceleration, SP2 - including the changes brought with FSX.

Please - if you haven'r read that doc in over a week - read it again - it is updated almost daily, and answers many questions and misunderstandings about DX10 that seem to be repeated here any number of times.

Steve Parsons has been actively researching - and repairing the DX10 side of the FSX shader system, aiming at eliminating the left-over DX10 issues. These are the ShadersHLSL - High-Level Shader Language files which ACES were unable - through time constraints or other reasons - to complete in time for the release of SP2. He is also actively engaged in creating a solution for those grey boxes and other incompatibilities, which may even encompass some of the older FS9 airports, too.

The initiative, enthusiasm and work output which Stevejp - on his own - has displayed in taking on the job of actually finishing off that development, is an incredible achievement. This is what he is doing.

There is no such thing as "never intended as a finished product" - they were simply left in that unfinished state, a conscious decision, likely pegged as a low-priority item by Project, Business and Marketing management of Microsoft's Gaming Studios.

It is one thing to 'better' a product with an improvement, or to fix a known issue - but it is quite another to knowingly allow a product to market, and label something like DX10 as a "Preview" with that "Preview " programming barely functional, and not at all representing a true preview of "what's coming with DX10".

Steve's work-in-progess, currently at version 3.2.2, has been successful to the degree that I feel that a wholesale move for many "simmers" - to DX10 is now a practicality. There are dozens - if not several hundred FSX users - and growing daily, who have completed this transition, and I believe it has somewhat created a new and exciting experience for that avid flight-simmer: an alternate to P3D, a new and smoother FSX, and at the same time, creating an business opportunity for forward-thinking commercial FSX developers, such as FS DreamTeam, REX, HiFiSim and FlyTampa, FSWC all whose recent products are marketed as DX10-compatible.

All the Best.

I really appreciate Steve and everyone who is working on this DX10. It makes me look forward to getting back into FSX in the evening

It's funny because the OOMs or crashes now seem to happen after the aircraft has landed and if it is sitting idle at the gate, like if I get doing something else and leave FSX running after a flight.

As long as I'm flying or taxing, it hasn't seemed to crash.

Is this just a coincidence, or is there something to it?

Ok, just finished a flight from KLAX to CYVR (both from FSDT) at night with the PMDG 737NGX with FS2Crew, and everything went very smoothly. CYVR had extremely heavy snow on approach, and the runway lights were not visible until 1000 feet, when I switched to manual landing.

All the lights at both airports looked very good and I have Experience X night lighting from Beetleprint, which makes the night lighting look great, but I'm not sure if default airports had good runway lights because the visibility was poor.

This flight is about 1000 miles and before using DX10, I could never have made it without an OOM error.

FSX again crashed after I was finished with the flight and parked at the gate, getting ready for the shut-down checklist. It seems like it was not an OOM error, but just a fatal error.

Hey how did you get heavy snow on approach. Its pouring rain here.

Anyhow Ive done a fresh install of FSX and comparing DX9 and DX10 and slowly adding addons. I have to say DX10 certainly makes a difference in visual quality, and there is some savings on the MB. Ill post the pics when I can and I have finished this venture.

Forgot how reinstalling FSX is quite the undertaking.

I've read this thread with interest. I've downloaded and installed Steve's dx10 shader fix, but I'm struggling with my AA settings. How can I get good AA and anisotropic settings in fsx in dx10? It looks like crap now with shimmering and jagged lines across the board.

I have a Nvidia GTX 690 card btw, and use Nvidia Inspector settings as described in the PMDG general forum section.

Thanks to the doc, I've been able to explore DX10 and think I will be making it my platform for FSX. I have two things to say about the above quote. One is a question about the fix for the splash screen in Steve's latest release. I'm guessing I have an older build and will need ot update because I did notice a splash screen when I loaded a flight at the start of the flight as the textures were loading. So what I am reading is there is absoutely no splash screen anymore? What shows if the texture is not there then as it loads? Or does this mean like when over water you wont see the splash screen in a water tile anymore but instead the fix has been made to show the water tile?

Secondly, you have a very easy to follow, detailed How to doc and if you are actively updating it, might I make the suggestion to some how post when it was last updated or what was updated or something along those lines as it looks like it was posted in Oct of 12 and hadnt been updated since based off of post date stamps.

Many thanks for all those who are actively working on fixes and support for DX10preview as it really a huge leap forward for at least me.

Thanks, Ident - you're right! By "splash screen" I meant the Blue FSX - DX10 splash screen that one sees, say when loading the WACO for the first time - the VC instrument panels pops into view first, then the windshield frame - then the glass and scenery - but for about five secomds the glass is filled with a big blue area with "FSX" or "Flight Simulator X" in big black letters...... When flying over water (most noticeable) you will occasionally see the same great big square area... flashes on for a second or two. This also happens - exactly the same - in DX9 - but one doesnt see it or notice it, because that one is a slightly transparent black....That's what Steve has included in the Patch.

Yes - again - you're right! ( ) I will put an update date at the top.

All the Best,

I've still got that issue even with the patch installed. What's going on?

Hi CB - Look in your main FSX folder - where the fsx.exe lives - scroll down and find bkg.bmp. Open it with Paint or your favorite graphics program, and tell me what colour it is.....

It shows a blue FSX splashscreen. I guess that I need to manually replace that myself?

EDIT: Just realised that it's in the Bonus! folder and must be manually replaced. Thank you for the help.

Aside from the occasional things flashing intermittently , or white AI planes, its been pretty good. The one big thing that glares out right now is night issues including dawn and dusk windows. The majority of airports just go grey and have alot of big blocks.

I dont see this has been fixed yet or have I missed something. If I have, then pointing to the thread would be appreciated.

FSDT CYVR looks stunning at night.
