January 14, 201313 yr Author How do you think we enter flight plans in real life? The same way we pump gas to fill the tanks in real life, adjust our seats, fasten our seatbelts, and all the other real life things. This is the sim we are talking about here. In real life, I can take my golf clubs along, in the sim I can't. In real life I get to smell the roses and avgas, in the sim I don't. I can fly the sim in my underwear and not shave for 3 days. I guess I could also fly in real life like that also. Real world pilot.(5,500 logged hours) Commercial MEL SES, Instrument, DC-3 Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
January 14, 201313 yr How do you think we enter flight plans in real life? This is a sim it is not real life there a lots of things we do in the sim that don't reflect real world flying eg use a keyboard use a mouse view a monitor etc. I like to fly the scenic route that often involves lots of custom waypoints that avoid high terrain and are easily created by point and click using third party planners. Doing this with RXP Garmins is a major hassle. Bruceb Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
January 14, 201313 yr Author The one thing that makes me want to keep the Reality XP is the LPV approaches. I just searched on the latest number available (both realworld and sim) and came up with a really slick Excel spreadsheet put out by the FAA. 3,029 listed with sort capability. Wow. I fired up my SimPlates X Ultra on one screen and the spreadsheet on the other and started a new list of interesting sounding approaches. Get it here. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ato/service_units/techops/navservices/gnss/approaches/index.cfm Snapshot of summary. Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
January 14, 201313 yr If someone can figure out the format for a Garmin GNS flightplan, the best way would be to create it and put it where the GNS expects to find it. Just like the RXP GNS has an FS flightplan export feature, it would need to have an FS flightplan import feature. Failing that, I still believe my proposed approach has merit. Program a gauge that will: - Parse the FS flightplan file - For each waypoint, translate the digits into knob turns and button pushes - Use FSUIPC/LUA to send the keystrokes The GNS is capable of being driven by key combinations, so that is already in place Could be done  Example: Assuming you are in the U.S. KSFO to KCVO <ATCWaypoint id="KSFO"> </ATCWaypoint> <ATCWaypoint id="SGD"> </ATCWaypoint> <ATCWaypoint id="RBL"> </ATCWaypoint> <ATCWaypoint id="EUG"> </ATCWaypoint> <ATCWaypoint id="KCVO"> </ATCWaypoint> - Push FPL button - Push right inner knob (KSFO will be loaded if airplane at KSFO) - Turn right inner knob (Produces the default "K") - Calculate position of S in the alphabet relative to to K (8?) - Turn right inner knob 8 times - Turn right outer knob - Turn right inner knob 7 times (for "G") - Turn right outer knob etc etc Bert
January 14, 201313 yr Well I am more than grateful that this product saved me a huge amount of money allowing me to practice rw techniques on the ground while the engine wasn't running at $6 a gallon. Yes it is a pain to have to enter stuff in fs in a rw manner- I'd personally explore hardware that was in another thread to ease the pain and is not so expensive now than ask this unit to function in a totally unrealistic fashion- that is if you are simming vs. gaming, Make it unrealistic though and not working the way the rw unit works- goes beyond my comfort zone. Yep when going 186 kts or so- and finding you have a problem working the rw unit-is a big problem. Working it in a rw fashion on a sim- is a wonder-a money saver- and a blessing. January 14, 201313 yr I personally would rather see someone get a more up to date navdata in the RXP units first.

January 14, 201313 yr Are you willing to pay big bucks for it- I was the database updates guy for my rw aircraft every month and the costs were substantial-every monthly cycle.do simmers expect a cut rate because they are simmers? Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
January 14, 201313 yr Author Geofa, I don't follow your logic here. The sim version of the Garmin G1000 by Flight1 and Carenado will read default flight plans. Even the FSX C172 will. I haven't heard anyone talking about that being weird or unnatural. What makes this model any different in expected capability? Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
January 14, 201313 yr Cause it isn't realistic. Are you simming or playing? Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

January 14, 201313 yr Author Cause it isn't realistic. Are you simming or playing? I completed Flight Safety's real world training for the G1000 just like all the other Pilots getting typed in the Cessna Mustang about 2 months ago. They recommend using FSX and Flight1's simulator product for practice. They never used the word 'playing' or 'simming' that I recall. I fly my simulator just like I fly real airplanes and have never asked myself if I'm simmin' or playing. Probably simming. One thing I remember is that most of the pilots that stated they had prior experience with a GPS could not do anything more than use the Direct to function. Ray Where is that update? Probably lost in the 'restore'. I remember it was at a 4shared.com site and is the 6 MB bin file. You should be able to find it with a forum search. Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
January 14, 201313 yr If you expect the FSX flight planner to take care of your troubles you are playing.if you went to flight safety surely and with your credentials you know how a garmen works-and there is no way to upload everything... would be nice-but there is endless button twiddling. Your last statement is Ununderstandable. Let me give you a rw story with two pilots in a baron ( 1 me) flying from boston to Detroit. After takeoff and approval of clearance told clearance amended but so long we have no time to give it to you- fly to x. After flying to x and passing it told stand by-then read a clearance that had my co plot twiddling the dial for 15 minutes -until finally getting all the waypoints into the gps-then after all the waypoints which took 15 minutes to dialtwiddle being told to fly direct. Unfortunately no FSX flight planner put all that in automatically and frankly if I had been single pilot I'd been overwhelmed. Your statements that direct to is the only response that a gs can do or that the FSX planner should do all the dirty work leave my head spinning. ..and thanks for your repaint way back. January 14, 201313 yr Author Geofa, We completed a questionnaire of flight experience etc prior to the course. Almost everyone checked the box for 'GPS experience' When asked who could input a flight plan with a SD, modify the plan while enroute and add a STAR when flying single pilot, only a very few answered Yes. Like I said - practically all the others limit of practical knowledge was using the Direct To function. Does anyone use the flight planner? I know I never have. Not even once. I use it to get the GPS to input the saved flight plan, even in the AIrbus X. Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
January 14, 201313 yr I agree-why practicing on the sim in a realistic fashion is most important. Importing an FSX flight plan which cant be done with the real unit is not only unrealistic but impossible. Question- I've been flying ifr since 1991 With landings in every Us state except alaska and Hawaii and have had only 8 stars which were amended by vectors before even the first waypoint. Was that discussed? Sounds like a lot of academia discussed? I have never had a single hold either-though my instructor promissed me that would be the case in 1991.
