March 1, 201313 yr there is a gauge out there that you can use to test how much weight is being added by ice, not too sure what the name is. Charles (Dutch) Owen released an ANTI ICE gauge for Flight Simulator and did some excellent TESTS on the subject matter. His README explains the subject matter very well and he provides tweaks that you can make to change the icing in the simulator so that it is much more realistic than what is provided by default. Look for IceV10.zip by Charles (Dutch) Owen in the File Library. Robert
March 1, 201313 yr It's a very good gauge. I've adapted it for the VC10. One has to say that in a "heavy" critical ice accumulation takes some time. However the rule is if you are in known icing conditions it's your responsibilty to remove yourself expeditiously. Don't wait for the a/c to remove you from the icing conditions! If you use the gauge you must make sure that FSUIPC is set for maximum possible, likewise your weather engine must have icing enabled. The sim weather engine must be set for severe (if you don't use an external weather engine). And your air file must have tables 1513, 1518, and 1519. It doesn't "increase" the incidence of icing. It just means that when real icing is present you will know about it. There are too many a/c with "icing" gauges that are mere switches or just activate when the temperature drops to say -7c. If you do use the gauge remember that airframe anti-ice should not be left on permanently as it affects engine performance. March 2, 201313 yr Are we talking about ice generaly in FSX? I thought the Rob was refering to the PMDG NGX? I have been told on many occations by different people on this forum that the NGX doesn't have structural icing simulated. Wing contamination and so on. It would be great if this was not true of course. I will take 'dumbed' down icing any day? J u l ia n D i a m a n d i s
March 2, 201313 yr Commercial Member I have no idea about FSX, fs9 for definite so I would assume FSX is the same. Rob Prest
March 2, 201313 yr I recall a flight a year or so ago in the lancair IVP and I was in the Midwest somewhere at around 20,000 feet and there were severe thunderstorms in the area too numerous to fly around and all of a sudden the plane started to lose power and then altitude. Using the alternate air or carb heat/anti ice switches did nothing. Once I lost enough altitude to where the temp increased the problem abated. I've had similar occurrences in the stock Mooney Bravo but then using the anti ice carb heat switches solved the problem instantly so the lancair issue was different and was actual icing on the plane and not just ice build up involving the engine. "Why, he just jumped into the air and kept right on going."
March 3, 201313 yr Yes, carb heat is almost always simulated. Airframe ice on the other hand, although "available" in the sim is not always set up by the a/c developer. More often than not it's just a dummy switch. Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
March 23, 201313 yr Did someone successfully made use of the IceV10.zip by Charles (Dutch) Owen gauge with the NGX? I just downloaded the gauge mostly out of curiousity, would be great if there was a way to have more realistic icing effects when flying the NGX in icing conditions!
December 10, 201411 yr Is there a download to have anti ice on in fsx Do a Google search for IceV10.zip. Michael Cubine

December 11, 201411 yr It's here. http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=IceV10.zip&CatID=root&Go=Search Read the instructions carefully. As you may need to make changes/add tables to the air file. Plus you may need to change weather engine settings and FSUIPC settings. It's all in the instructions so read them carefully. December 11, 201411 yr Dutch Owen is the author of FS Captain, here is a short extract from the features list:- "FS Captain can optionally enhance the effects of hazardous weather in Flight Simulator (either version) including making thunderstorms and icing dangerous -- even making runways and taxiways slick when frozen over! As of 1.5 this means a full simulation of icing on the ground and in the air, including realistic ground de-icing and anti-icing procedures." http://www.fscaptain.net/ And yes I do own FS Captain, but I have never fallen out of the sky, because I perform all my de and anti-icing procedures..;-) AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 4.2 32 gig ram, Nvidia RTX3060 12 gig, Intel 760 SSD M2 NVMe 512 gig, M2NVMe 1Tbt (OS) M2NVMe 2Tbt (MSFS) Crucial MX500 SSD (Backup OS).
