February 7, 201313 yr Hello, I've had FS9 on my desktop for the past year but my computer finally died. I am planning on purchasing a computer with the following specs: Processor 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3770 processor (up to 3.90 GHz) Operating System Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64Bit, English Memory1 8GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz Hard Drive 2TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive 6.0 Gb/s Video Card AMD Radeon™ HD 7570 1GB GDDR5 Should i run fsX or fs9 with these specs? I currently have all kinds of freeware scenery, airplanes and cloud upgrades. I have also purchased some pay-ware things like FlyTampa st. barts and the PMDG 1900. However, I am not satisfied with the graphics on fs9. My friend has a bare bones laptop running fsX and the graphics are much better than mine. Is there a way to make the scenery in fs9 comparable to fsX? I plan on purchasing all kinds of pay-ware scenery and aircraft for my next setup. Either way I would like to make the leap to fsX but if the above system would not be able to run it then perhaps I will stay with fs9. Also, if you could please let me know what scenery upgrades are out there for the various sims. I am familiar with Aircraft upgrades, but I have no Idea what "textures" are or how any of the scenery stuff works, much less which ones to purchase. In conclusion, my computer skills are not the greatest and any advice in creating the best setup with the above system would be appreciated. Thanks
February 7, 201313 yr You should run FSX well, how well your spec runs FSX depends on many aspects such as what aircraft add on you're flying, traffic, area (conj with 3rd party add on such as FTX, GEX, UTX, Airports) and above all, your graphic settings. Try not to forget gathering info about tweakings, they should be easily found around. You wil have zero problems running FS9.. the only problem you might encounter is they who challenge you to answer "why on earth are you using FS9.. it looks cartoonish, FSX is a lot better and all the developers are bla bla bla bla..." don't get me wrong, their intentions are good, to get you to optimize your system to the fullest with the latest MSFS platform.. I use both and my spec is slightly lower than You, if not far lower.. have fun
February 7, 201313 yr FSX all the way with that computer! You can always run both later on if you want to. As far as scenery goes, ORBX all the way!
February 7, 201313 yr I like you have just recently purchased a new computer with a similar spec. I've been using FS9 since it came out and for the last 6 years using an old P4. I can't believe the difference that this new computer has made to FS9. All the sliders to max with ge pro, UT and all my payware I've purchased over the years. I've done the cfg tweak and the 4gb memory update to the FS9 exe. Ive set the frame rate to 26 and its as smooth as silk. All the info is here on the forum. I'll be staying with FS9 thank you. Steve
February 7, 201313 yr Maybe your FS9 was or looked cartoonish Quaraisy I now have a rig that could run FSX well I think and I have FSX but I don't want to spend 80-90% of my time trying to tweak it to perform for me. (It must have 2 inches of dust on it by now LOL) Sooo I am still running FS9.1 and everything is at full blast. Also a list of addons that just goes on and on all with no saw tooths and no twitches at all. And I get to fly all the time except when I am installing more addons mostly payware. I am not saying saying don't use FSX or FS9. Just spend a few hours reading the Avsim forums and then make your decisions because you will have to live with them all aobt14....John
February 7, 201313 yr You will be able to run both sims well under your specification. Just an observation ... you have nominated a 2 gig hard drive. Yes they are affordable these days but the TIME it takes to defragment it will drive you nuts. Instead I would suggest either two 500 gigs or two i terrabyte drives each with its own sim is a more practical, if slightly more expensive, solution. They could be backed up on a 2 Terra drive. .

However, the TS might want to have a fair review from fsx users too, although, he ended here in FS9 forum. Go for both sims.. I am using FS9 as my main sim, but that's just me, a fs9er in a fs2004 forum )
February 7, 201313 yr FSX should run pretty well on that rig. Though even with those specs, you might have issues in dense areas with numerous addons if you have settings nearly maxed. What type of flying do you prefer? GA or heavy metal in dense airports? I think fS9 looks great with good addons, but developers are increasingly abandoning it for obvious commercial reasons. As much as I still love FS9, if I had your specs I'd make the jump. Make sure to check out and ask around the FSX forum for tips on optimizing your setup, essential addons and such.

February 7, 201313 yr Yes, you can run FSX easy. FS9 is def a go. I run FS9 on mine due to the resources. And my computer sucks. If your computer is newer than 10 years, you can run FS9!
February 7, 201313 yr off the top of my head, I would get multiple smaller drives so you can put FSX on its own drive. Faster memory as well as it isn't that much more expensive and the 3770 will take advantage of it. And get the 3700k and a cooler so you can overclock it.
February 7, 201313 yr I have a pretty good PC and i use both. With fsx, you will not get more then 16-18fps at Heatrow for example, even at 5GHz(with sliders settings high). But textures are superior too fs9. So, i use fs9 if i want absolutelly smooth flight or i need to fly to one really fps heavy airport. I have a couple of planes only for fs9, or other planes that works better in fs9. But i relly use(and i like)both sims. With that PC you can run both too, try and see which sim you like more Zeljko Budovic
