Interesting and challenging airports

Featured Replies

Another vote for LOWI (Innsbruck). A short quick flight from many European airports, a procedure heavy approach, challenging airmanship to nail speed/altitudes and beautiful scenery (real life and in FSX from Aerosoft).

Isafjordur, Iceland (BIIS). Approach into a steep closed off fjord with a 180 degree turn for final to the runway.

If I recall, this is pretty limited in aircraft size...on the order of large regional turboprops or small regional jets?  I saw a video posted around these parts sometime and indeed an impressive approach, parts of which have essentially no escape option.

RNAV RNP RWY02 at VNKT in Nepal.

edit: try CYKA. KBOS has a SID they call the LOBSTER because it looks like a lobster tail. I think its called the PATSS 2 RNAV DEP.

One route that might be nice to fly is Zurich to Milan (or opposite direction), with the Swiss/Italian Alps between them. Does anyone have arrival (STAR) and approach info for Milan?

Thanks, Bruce.

Genova in northern Italy has a fantastic approach, in right over the mountains to an airport right next to the sea, also greatly suited to private jets and any type of flying with its 9000ft runway, it has an offset ILS due to the buildings on the approach so it's manual only for the last bit ;) It also has a great scenery for FSX.

Thanks for pointing that one out,it's funny because FSEarthtiles automatically loads right over that airport when you open it and I had wished there was an addon for it since it looks pretty interesting.  Downloading now and cant wait to try it out.

Wow!!! I tried it and ... it was equally a treat and demanding. The treat came even from default FSX scenery ...

Here's one in return for all of you:

Prince George/CYXS (make it a "Full Terrain Experience", too) - not challenging but scenic!

Malpensa or Linate?

I see, Malpensa has the messiest (is that a correct superlative for the word "mess"?) procedures I ever saw. In jepp publication there is no clue how to transit from star to approach, while Italian AIP is so unreadable, my eyes hurt now.

Basically you want to use ODINA1K RNAV STAR or ODINA 1J if you are not equipped with proper equipment to fly rnav. From there the only solution I see is to expect ATC vectors to FAF.

I can recommend SEQU Quito Mariscal Sucre Intl. (the old one) Try a AA 757 from Miami (arrival at night) or a Delta 737 from Atlanta. (Shorter hops from Bogota). 180deg turn between the mountains while descending and only 7 mi to go after you finished your turn. Additionally, its a high altitude airport (Elv. 9222) in the middle of the city.
