April 3, 201313 yr A new airport at Castellon in Spain has been open for two years without a single flight. http://www.murciatoday.com/castellon-airport-marks-second-anniversary-of-inauguration_15726-a.html Other reports say that the runway will have to be relaid to meet regulations http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/spain/9084202/Castellon-airport-Spanish-ghost-airports-unused-runway-to-be-dug-up-to-meet-regulations.html Google it for more information Gerry Howard
April 3, 201313 yr just one more way to burry money provided by the EU  the money isn't lost (money doesnt get lost by millions), it's just in another pocket
April 3, 201313 yr We have some dead airports here in the US that had high hopes when they were built (KPIT, KSTL, KMCI). Nothing like your example where the airport is not even used. CYMX is the biggest disaster I can think of for a situation like this. At least it's used for Cargo. April 3, 201313 yr CYMX Mirabel Airport is the other big flop in Montreal. People may remember seeing that one in the movie The Terminal with Tom Hanks that was filmed in the empty terminal building that was built there. It is now used for some Cargo ops and a NASCAR race track. The Bombardier factory is also located there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montr%C3%A9al%E2%80%93Mirabel_International_Airport Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
April 4, 201313 yr To add to this the US examples I mentioned above were downgraded to irrelevant status thanks to various mergers and demises. USAirways actually has it out for KPIT's airport authority over financial requests made as the airport authority wanted to be properly compensated for the airport expansion work done on USAirway's behalf. KSTL went by way of the Doto Bird as well after TWA folded into American Airlines. KMCI I believe was trying to attract airlines with a more modern airport which failed. The unifying story with all these airports though is the affect of mergers and airlines folding that has caused ghost town facilities compared to what they were purposed to be. April 5, 201313 yr Moderator Do not forget that terrific boondoggle known as KBLV "Mid-America St. Louis..." MidAmerica St. Louis Airport was created to alleviate some crowding of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, but has never had service from any major airline and has been criticized as a pork barrel project.[7] Featured several times as a "Fleecing of America" segment on the NBC Nightly News, it was called a "Gateway to Nowhere" by Tom Brokaw, costing taxpayers $313 million.[8] Supporters credit MidAmerica's additional runway with saving Scott AFB from closure during BRAC 2005. They also describe MidAmerica as a "Gateway to the World", citing a new cargo terminal and customs facility designed to attract international cargo.[3] Congestion at Lambert-St. Louis has not been a problem since American Airlines reduced hub operations by fifty percent in 2003 and a new billion-dollar runway opened in 2006.[9][10] Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MidAmerica_St._Louis_Airport Fr. April 6, 201313 yr Do not forget that terrific boondoggle known as KBLV "Mid-America St. Louis..." Remember seeing that once when we flew AMC into Scott AFB. Big terminal across from the base. Way out in the boonies, don't know why anyone would want to go there. I never thought Lambert was that crowded. scott s. .

April 6, 201313 yr That's too bad. Funny how a "major" airport can get built fairly easy just about anywhere, but great airports like KVNY have to fight to remain open.
