View in Virtual Cockpit

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am new to the B737NGX and have the following issue:

I do not like the 2D cockpit too much and would like to use the virtual cockpit.

However, I have not managed yet to find a reasonable position yet to see at least something outside when looking through the cockpit window and have the full ND instrument in view at the same time.

Is there a trick to find a good view (maybe a zoom or so)?

I am using a screen with a 1920x1080 resolution.

Thank you for any help in advance!

Tilo

I don't know the exact number that's displayed in the corner but I always zoom out three times (hit - three times) from the default position. I don't know if my default view is the correct one, though...

Actually, there is.  Nice question.

My preference is TrackIR from Natural Point, it will change your flight sim experience. Imagine being able to look in any direction just by moving your head, you can even look down as if your face was pressed to the glass to see what the Marshaller or tug crew is doing just as if you were on the flight deck itself.

There is also FaceTrack using a Webcam, though I've never tried it.

Finally, using the Control-Shift-Enter, Control-Shift-Backspace, Control-Enter, Control-Backspace, and Shift-Enter, Shift-Backspace along with the zoom in/out will allow you to position where you want to be on the fly.  I recommend having a reset eye point key/button assigned.

Hope this helps.

hi! I have also seen some view that are taken from the virtual cockpit but in front (like from the cockpit door) how can you get that shot?

Depends, some developers have those views already set in the aircraft config file. You manually make changes or add views to the [VIEWS] section of the aircraft config file should you wish to (Google Views and aircraft config file).

Finally, you can move around the flight deck manually by using the keys I mentioned in my first reply above, or use a TrackIR, etc.

To get the best view of systems and outside, I zoom out all the way to 0.30 and use CTRL+Enter until It's just right.

I have wide screen mode set on, and use a .65 zoom. From there I can see outside in detail, and the PFD/MFD combo and at least part of the upper EICAS.

I also push the seat back Ctrl+Shift+Enter/Backspace so that the 'eyepoint' is almost resting on the headrest.

If I need overhead I will look up, if I need radios I will look down and right using hatswitch or spacebar+mouse movement.

Hello to all,

thanks very much for all your advice.

One question though: Some of you mention to zoom out (e.g. to zoom to 0.30). How can I do that? How does the zoom work?

Use the + and - keys to zoom in and out. In my opinion zooming out to 0.30 will give far too distorted a view, like a fisheye lens. You can see everything but read nothing. The default view as set by PMDG and described in the manuals is a good start. I find 0.6 to 0.7 zoom works best in the NGX.

In the manual titled "NGX Introduction" page 104, Ryan went to great lengths to describe how to achieve the best VC view.  Check it out.

I got it now. Thank you.

Hi Hopskip,

How did you get the routes and airport to work on your screen?  Is there a special program?  What harware are you using?  Also sounds like you have a different sound set?

THanks

Rob

i have experimented a little with the zoom factor in fsx, to determine what the most realistic view would be. zoom factor from 0.6 to 0.7 gives a good view of the objects inside the cockpit, but i think the view of the world outside is effected by perspective distortion, where objects look smaller and more distant than they would in real life. i don't have real world experience in the cockpit to base this judgement, but my personal understanding is that the more you zoom out from factor 1.0 the more the perspective is distorted. this also effects speed perception. with a small zoom factor you seem to be moving faster.

i personally use a zoom factor of 0.85-0.90 and have adjusted the view via ezdok to include the PFD, ND and the engine indications. i hope some of the real pilots around here can tell us what is the most realistic zoom factor?

Most setups I see on YouTube are, for me at least, zoomed way too far out and this also distorts the outside perspective too much and makes accurate instrument hand flying more taxing than it needs to be.

As a real NG pilot, with much trial an error I have found that a zoom of about .9 (just fits the PFD and ND in view) with TrackIR is just about right in terms of detail, outside view and more or less captures the same head movement requirements for a full flying instrument, engine instrument and outside visual scan.

To achieve this I need to center TrackIR by looking up slightly so that in a relaxed position I have an easy view of the PFD.

Personal opinion is that TrackIR is essential, I wouldn't bother with the VC without it!

I use Opus camera, with DHM.  Set to zoom 0.5 otherwise I can´t see the HUD.  Great view out, can just see N1 gauges and plenty outside.
