I built a 4770K Haswell / GTX 770 system for a friend yesterday

With a GTX680 2GB my NvidiaInspector AA setting is at 32xS [Combined: 2x2 SS + 8x MS]. FSX looks insane. The card gets used for many other things as well.

To each their own.

As max said gtx 780 is not solely for fsx.

I'm a bit over people jumping to conclusions in these forums. Just because you dont see something as necessary for your usage or you cant warrant the cost of the upgrade doesnt mean it's not going to get put to good use in my scenario.

And yes gtx 780 will be of benefit in fsx specially with high AA levels.

I chuckle too when I see people post about OverKill GPUs. FSX isn't the only program on computers. I would be willing to bet that most people have at least one other game they play.

I am one of the few I guess though that noticed not as good AA with my 670 than I did with my 560. Weird. I get better performance cause no slowdowns but it doesn't seem to handle AA as sharp. Even max settings don't give me clear taxi and runway lines and such.

Well the question about the GPU is a fair question. Sure there is nothing wrong with overkill. I bought 2 x GTX 580 after they where released and yes SLI will not help FSX and sure I am a fan of Codemasters racing games and there it does help. IF you are into this kind of stuff you have to upgrade every 2 or 3 years. I would be useful to stick FSX requirements and forget about other applications we use our high end PC for. In fact I am going to start a new thread for that very purpose.

Who says they're buying 780 only for FSX?  I bought a 780 to upgrade from my 680, mostly for other games.  Besides, with high enough AA settings you can in fact see a performance increase in FSX with a faster video card.  Word Not Allowed's Titan review shows that much.

On my system, 0.3 FPS difference between GTX460 1GB and GTX 670 2GB, at 1920x1080, 16XS AA. Massive difference in other games, though.

I've been looking at the newest CPU's and thinking about getting one (in a new PC) but I wonder what the benefit will be since I have a i5 2500K running at 4.5 Ghz... Ok, so the newest greatest CPU running at 4.5 Ghz may be something like my i5 running at 5.0 but how much gain is that...? In percentages it isn't much so probably in fps and performance it will be even less...? I might add a GTX 780 to it all (I have a TGX580 now) but then I may probably get some better FSAA but all in all...

So I wonder if I should even bother...

I think Haswell is on the borderline of being worth it if you currently have a SB system. About 20% faster IPC and 10-15% better mem performance.

People running earlier CPUs than SB should upgrade. (Worth it IMO)

I have some other games which make good use of my GTX 670 4 GB. Bioshock Infinite uses around 2.5-3 GB worth of my VRAM at most (game uses high resolution 2048x2048 textures pretty much everywhere, AFAIK).

As for the CPU, I also do video encoding, so with FSX, I don't buy the chip with the highest clockspeed, because I use my system for multiple purposes.

I'm personally waiting for Skylake as my next upgrade for FSX. Should give a good boost over my current Sandy Bridge system. I've been kind of doing little upgrades here and there. Rather than a big upgrade every 2 years, I do that to have upgrades every 4 years

Glad Haswell turned out much better than expected. How are the temps? Is it voltage hungry? Done some FPS tests already Ryan?

Shame I can't afford an upgrade right now. But of course you can always donate.

I've got a Haswell i7-4770k for 5 days now. At stock speed and stock fan so far. I get 30 FPS in most scenarios with NGX. The lowest FPS I get is about 23-24. GPU GTX 560 Ti. I use REX 2 (NO OverDrive), Active sky for real weather and Word Not Allowed's guide for tweaks. I fly NGX With UK2000 and Aerosoft airports. The performance is very good and very smooth(I've got some flashes because of the tweaks) . As for the temps on gaming MAX 65 (Stock Fan). I am more than happy with the Haswell system since I've upgraded from Core 2 quad q9650. This is my humble few days experience with Haswell

There is no such thing as overkill in PC's world if you have the funds....period.

Nick has always been the best. Sometimes he has perhaps overreached with his opinions, but between him and Holger Sandmann, it is a toss up as to who is the greater genius.

We do not have to choose though. It is Nick for hardware and all things related, and Holger for scenery, and all things related.

But really, I think there are some here that shine pretty bright in both hardware, and software coordination for FSX. It is both...

Kind regards,

Stephen Wilcox

There is a lot of truth in this statement... lol
