August 25, 201312 yr That's too easy. I know how the various modes work (and also that dynamic weather shouldn't show obvious updates in the game because the weather is only updated in the distance so out of sight) but well... what can I say: I suddenly saw clouds where there were none at first. I only had FSX running with TrackIR and FSGRW and I had even rebooted my PC to make sure nothing was in the way. Well...: Jeroen strange I'm preferring now FSGRW over OPUS due to the cloud shifting which I almost don't experience any more the effect is almost not noticeable... Stephen from OPUS just told me to live with it, and I don't agree with him because there are other ways to solve this ;-) I find it strange in OPUS to fly towards a cloud front and suddenly with OPUS after an update they are behind you that spoils the immersion factor for me personal. Including the turbulence and wind effects on the 3d model in FSX which I don't see with OPUS... The only problem I have is the haze layer suddenly sometimes disappears with FSGRW so they should have a look into that one.... From all the WX engines the last decade FS METEO/Active sky all versions/REX/OPUS/FSGRW get the last one now the most up time. André
August 25, 201312 yr Hey Jeroen, sorry if it came out that I was furstrated with you. Oh no, not at all!!! :friends:I only showed I agreed with you already! ^_^ From all the WX engines the last decade FS METEO/Active sky all versions/REX/OPUS/FSGRW get the last one now the most up time. Ah, well, ok, since I have FSGRW installed anyway and I've got about 10 points left (after one flight  ) I will keep on using FSGRW until the demo is done, just to give it a fair chance. Those 10 points should be enough for 5 flights so I will let you know what I think about it all when I am done! ^_^

We have a choice out several good WX products with all there positive and negative points, lucky us we have such choice and I applaud all that contribute to our wonderful hobby ;-) Just have fun in the virtual skies :-) André

You have replied to this thread about 10 times saying you prefer Opus which is awesome. No one is trying to pressure you into switching
August 25, 201312 yr Think I'm going to wait this one out and stay with REX for now ... but I've started having some weather data loading issues with REX now -- ugh. But thanks for all the input from the developers and community at large, I appreciate it ... the good, the bad, and the ugly. Cheers, Rob.
August 25, 201312 yr If you have and enjoy Opus why bother? You have replied to this thread about 10 times saying you prefer Opus which is awesome. No one is trying to pressure you into switching It's the same as with tweaking... The idea alone that something else might be better somehow... I just can't help it LOL Having doubts about addons and checking everything out about them is a major part of my hobby. ^_^ I also have this with Orbx regions: I bought Global and decided to only buy Norway South and nothing else (no SAK, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, whatever) but everyday I check out the topics and info about those regions and think 'Hmmmmmmm, maybe........' I am sure I am not the only one who has this 'problem' with addons.
August 25, 201312 yr I am sure I am not the only one who has this 'problem' with addons. You definitely aren't the only one

August 25, 201312 yr Ok, I did another short flight with FSGRW in Norway. First thing I noticed that the sky looked awesome! Can't say if it was realistic but it looked incredible mainly because it looked like FSGRW is using all kinds of clouds to create some very high layers (I don't know all the appropriate terms for all those kinds of clouds). Where OpusFSX shows REX cirrus textures up on high and cumulus clouds at lower altitudes (depending on the weather obviously) FSGRW seemed to use all possible types of clouds at various altitudes to create a sky that looked stunning. There wasn't a single cirrus texture in sight and still it looked like it. If you know what I mean. Can't remember having seen that with OpusFSX. Secondly: I didn't notice any popups this time. Third: problem was that when I wanted to compare FSGRW with OpusFSX (I saved the flight at two locations) OpusFSX showed me nothing but complete clear skies...! Now I don't live in Norway so of course I have no clue what the weather should be like down there right now, but one of the addons was COMPLETELY wrong, that's for sure. Fourth: those gentle movements that you get with FSGRW are nice indeed. Feels real. More real then the OpusFSX motion effects (which I turned off a while ago). So... I still have a few demo flights left but the FSGRW sky looked totally awesome... To be continued.
August 25, 201312 yr Yeah, I think I've tried all textures there are both freeware and payware ones and I've settled with the AS2012 textures. Might also mention that I use a resolution of 1024 for both clouds and textures and 32-bit textures. Thanks for posting your settings, I have installed these too. I really like them, only forgot to set the water effect to DXT1 format. The HD stuff just kills my system with both FSGRW and opus. Now doing my final demo flight from EHRD to LBBG after which I will decide whether to buy or not. Looking very good again so far. The only thing that worries me is whether I will like the weather as much when using dynamic weather. I currently do no see any sudden shifts in clouds, but that might be due to the static weather file that I use in the demo.. How are things when using dynamic updates? Edit: currently cruising at 37000 feet and it's raining with no clouds anywhere near this altitude.. What's going on there? Best regards, Alexander Rietveld
August 25, 201312 yr You're most welcome! I haven't experienced any serious sudden cloud shifting, I think what is important is to set all different sliders correct when it comes to distances.
August 25, 201312 yr but what I don't want is the on/off processing (i.e. clouds, no clouds, haze, no haze) over 100mi radius (or whatever cloud draw distance is set at). Understood. I can't say I never get this anymore with REX and Opus, but it's far less likely these days than it was a short time ago. Almost never is pretty accurate, which is probably why we're viewing the situation differently. Fourth: those gentle movements that you get with FSGRW are nice indeed. Feels real. More real then the OpusFSX motion effects (which I turned off a while ago). Interesting. I'm not a big fan of the Opus motion effects either I'm afraid, and REX currently seems to have erred on the cautious side of turbulence since the last update to keep some of the wind stuff at bay, so this feature is absolutely of interest to me as well. While I appreciate the amount of work the Opus developers took to gather real-world accelerometer data, it just doesn't always seem to translate to something that feels real to my screen. What I do is turn everything off except the required turbulence effects (Turbulent Bumps and Turbulent Motion), turn those down from defaults and then crank "Bump Aircraft" a bit above defaults. My personal preference would still be to have a way to just do bump aircraft, but I'm sure there are ties there that prevent this. Scott
August 25, 201312 yr One thing that certainly is in favor of FSGRW right now is something that used to be a big plus for OpusFSX too: simplicity. Over time the OpusFSX interface has because very busy and cluttered and there are way too many options to choose from: in the end I decided to go for the defaults almost everywhere but if that's the best, I don't know. FSGRW is so simple... just a very few easy to understand and logical options and that's it. Even less options than OpusFSX had in the beginning. One thing that certainly is in favor of OpusFSX is the ingame weather report.
August 25, 201312 yr In game weather report is a minus, it´s cheating basically. I now fly over small fields and check the wind socks out to determine my approach or check the forecasts on the net first so I know what to expect. Otherwise use ATIS at bigger airports. -Iain Watson-
August 25, 201312 yr I had forgotten about the Opus ingame weather report. It was nice to have, but also necessary. In the past Opus versions, the ATIS had wrong surface winds when you were above the recovery altitude. The report was the only place to get the correct weather for your destination. IIRC his has been now fixed. As I prefer to run my weather engines on my laptop, there is no need for ingame report (for me). For those who have a single computer setup and do not like to tune the ATIS, I can imagine that the Opus report is a very good feature.
