August 29, 201312 yr I hope ActiveSky 2013 will be the answer. So far neither AS2012 or Opus are. Opus is great for more accurate destination weather and somewhat smooth could transitions, but the vicious wind shifts are unbelievable. That and the author refuses to believe it's his problem. I don't get those with ActiveSky. He'll say AS is fudging the numbers, but they in fact are always accurate according to NOAA.
August 29, 201312 yr I flew the NGX on many flights using Opusfsx as weather engine. I never experienced wind shifts. Nor have this happening using FSGRW. It may be a problem for some but certainly not for all. Great news reading that Active Sky is announcing a new version. Jos
August 29, 201312 yr See here: http://www.hifitechinc.com/forums/showthread.php?1147-The-next-version-of-Active-Sky Well, it's one thing to talk the talk, and another to revolutionize weather engine design. I've spent some time in marketing, and this announcement sounds a bit over hyped...that happens sometimes in this hobby. If they produce a great product, then that's good for them and simmers everywhere. I question whether it will really outperform FSGRW, as I've been thrilled with it like no other weather engine. August 29, 201312 yr Looking at the different wx engines for FS I think they have now reached the max limit what can be done without inventing something totally new finding ways to improve things that no other yet thought of and if it will be HiFi or someone else that will take the next BIG step time will tell. HiFi has been around for many, many years and have lots of both knowledge and experience so to me it wouldn't come as a surprise if they actually will come up with something totally new and spectacular but on the other hand looking at FSGRW which is the wx engine I'm currently using I'm sure this engine will also continue to be further improved. I'm pretty sure the developer of FSGRW in no way will be sitting still but might also very likely come up with new, amazing stuff. In the end very interesting indeed for all of us users to see what is around the corner when it comes to wx engines and personally I think wx engines in particular are one of the most interesting things in FS since the weather depiction in FS is such a huge part of the overall immersion when flying the virtual skies.

I couldn't agree more. Flying with real-world wx (or as close as can be had in FSX) is a huge part of what makes the sim a quality experience for me. Scott
September 2, 201312 yr FSGRW version 1.7 build #12 has just been released, enjoy! INFORMATION ABOUT THE CURRENT RELEASEVersion 1.7 Build #012 was released on September 1st 2013 and contains the following changes: .) Completely rewritten Network Bridge for better performance and multiple simulator support. .) A bug, that could cause unnatural wind shifts to occur after completely refreshing the weather, was fixed. .) A bug, that caused initial weather sets during flight when flying with a simulation rate other than 1, was fixed. .) A bug, that caused upper air temperatures to be too high in many circumstances, was fixed. .) A bug, that caused natural wind movements to appear in high altitudes although the setting was turned off, was fixed. .) A bug, that caused exceptions and lost connections when using Prepar3D, was fixed. .) Added a feature that allows one FS Global Real Weather Client to connect to up to 7 Network Bridges and distribute weather information to them. .) The user interface of FS Global Real Weather now supports all DPI settings (not only 96). .) Natural Wind Movements now only occur up to a certain altitude (around FL100, depending on the actual atmospheric conditions) which is closer to reality than the previous implementation. .) FS Global Real Weather will now display METAR strings for each weather station review. However, these will not be exactly the same as the ones from NOAA (or other official sources), because FS Global Real Weather creates them based upon the actual weather data that is collected from more than just METAR data sources. .) Data export will now automatically be done after a successful weather download to improve support for third-party add-ons using our data exchange file (previous builds only exported when starting weather transfer). .) Updated documentation which now includes a step-by-step guide on how to create a shortcut with autostart parameters. .) Fixed a lot of spelling errors and text areas that were to small to display the complete text in the UI.
September 2, 201312 yr This is great news, Bsal - and I'm enjoying the product more than any in a long time, BUT - where do I find the link to actually get the Update?? Perhaps I'm blind, but I don't see it anywhere on the site.. September 3, 201312 yr I did my first flight with FSGRW build #12 from Austin to Denver, great weather depiction all the way, no cloud popping, no wind shifts no problems. These are the settings I use FSGRW weather radius=100nm, max visibility 180km, FSX clouddraw 176km. Using dynamic download mode in standard depiction mode.
September 3, 201312 yr See here: http://www.hifitechinc.com/forums/showthread.php?1147-The-next-version-of-Active-Sky My interest in Activesky went from hardly at all to mouth watering. Sent from Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Eric
September 3, 201312 yr Looks I was wrong with my "only one free weather engine" statement. Never fear though, I'll discuss this one in a separate thread. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
