So far I've been very impressed with FSGRW, it's not perfect, but I like the way it does weather fronts. But I did notice something strange and I'm assuming FSGRW is doing this but I get flattened clouds?

I also don't get wind data sometimes (flight from KIAD to KJFK) I had no winds at all.

This is running in Standard Mode with Static Weather Download.

The ratio between flat stratus clouds and cumulus clouds can be managed by a slider in the FSGRW settings.

EDIT: It's under Tools > Settings > General > Weather Depiction Realism

The about not having winds at all. I have had this once when flying in Europe. I cross checked with PFPX wind data and sure enough, the wind speed at my cruise altitude was 0kts in both programs. This might be an error in the NOAA data as both programs reported the same conditions.

Interesting, I can't find any such setting?  Can you give me a hint on how to find it?  I don't see anything in the PDF either.

Thanks, Rob.

Very seldom get wind shifts. Maybe you have not set it up correctly, or your system is not up to it.

I have used 4 weather engines and Opus is the only one causing violent wind shifts.

My system is locked at 30fps and only goes below 25fps when on the ground at busy airports. Opus should have plenty of time to work it's magic. No such problems with FSGRW or AS2012.

Sorry about that. I edited my reply while you were typing :)

Slider to the right for more status clouds, slider to the left for more cumulus clouds.

Oh I see it, thank you ... the slider is all the way to the right so I assume that means more stratus cloud and less cumulus.

Absolutely correct.

I read the preview to the upcoming Active Sky Next in the link posted above. I don't own FSGRW but after reading all the great reviews and comments here and on the net, I was planning on buying it today. Since I don't own it yet, could someone explain whether the new version of Active Sky would be all that much better than FSGRW..

It seems like Active Sky will offer quite nice thunderstorm simulation and turbulence, up-draft and down-draft effects when flying through thunderstorm clouds, BUT, after reading their other features and thinking about FSGRW, would it REALLY become the gold standard of wx for FSX? My impression is that it'll have a few nifty features over FSGRW, especially in relation to thunderstorms, but it doesn't look like a madly revolutionary product.

I'd appreciate your input so I can decide whether to get FSGRW or wait for Active Sky. Thank you.

Well, of course none of us really know the answer at this point.  We can only guess based on a feature set and technical description.

I've also been moderately tempted to try FSGRW (I currently have Opus and and REX), but if the description of the feature set for the new AS is an accurate one then I DO think the product will be revolutionary, solving a number of specific problems/tradeoffs we've lived with for a long time with dynamic RW weather.

Only time and the release of the product will tell us for sure.

As stated by HiFi - ASNext will bypass the internal FSX weather engine and provide accurate weather for ALL types of flying without suffering from FSX built in issues. That alone is a giant leap ahead of other weather engines. The thunderstorm activity modeling is just one small part of the product.

I'm excited for the Active Sky product and will most likely buy it as soon as it's out. Because I needed a good weather program though, I went ahead and bought FSGRW. It is absolutely superb and very lightweight. I do not regret my decision to get it at all.
