MSE Oregon - 3D objects project

Featured Replies

Default lighting still works 'through' the MSE layer, and I've always thought it looks great.   No problems with it at all.     Jim posted some pretty good nightime MSE pics somewhere.   Sure, it's not perfectly aligned to the MSE but it generally works well.

Q400 really? I heard from someone that v2 of MSE that the lights showing on top of photo real doesnt work anymore.

As I mentioned in another thread, you can get v1 autogen working in v2 areas that overlap if you have the v1 products. Just make a new "textures" folder where you have your MSE state installed and copy in the .agn files from the overlapping v1 texture folders. I've done this in Colorado, and so far the results look OK and I've not run into any issues yet. Sure was nice to see trees when looking up towards the Palmer Divide from the ramp at Centennial Airport (KAPA) last night.

We should ask MSE to provide those files.  It's a no brainer.  Autogen would help them sell.

Just curious - do you think you photoreal simmers would pay for this type of add-on to enhance your photoreal scenery?

Not only do I think it would sell, you'd probably be creating more photoreal simmers.  A lot of folks don't fly it because it is so flat.  I, myself, turn it off most of the time for that very reason.

If anyone here does release scenery here on AVSIM (as I have for NJ and also Al Wheeler for parts of CA and a few others with individual projects) do keep in mind sending me an email so I can add your projects to my catalog! I've spoken to the MSE people several times about projects like these but never got any real support from them, so now I've jumped ship for a time and am working with FranceVFR's photoreal scenery. But I still at some point want to polish off the 2 dozen or so airports I have left in NJ to do for MSE textures (also was turned off by the quality of NJ textures in v2. ugh!)

If anyone here wants any tips/advice feel free to send me an email. The website is in my sig (MSE Airports)

Yes, really, I fly at night all the time in MSE. It looks good.   It's things like UTX Lights that won't shine through photoscenery, as the latter is always 'on top', but default FS night lighting works just fine with MSE.

Same thing I did for MSE that you see on my site, except I don't place any 3D objects, just rework the airport files to blend with the textures, have accurate parking and taxi lines, etc. Here's a shot of LFKB in progress - still need to draw ground markings for the small aircraft parking up top:

Then too, they use my airport files as a basis for creating more detailed airports as a separate product with 3D buildings and objects to blend into their VFR line of scenery products.

So now with their more recent photo scene releases (I think starting with Midi-Pyrénées PHOTO HD Vol.1) not only do you get great textures but highly detailed default airports as well :)

Obviously MSE is a much bigger product, which is why I always like seeing more people become interested in blending airports for it and adding objects to make taxiing/arrival/departure a better experience.

Correct. Default lighting shows through the MSE scenery. What was read by the poster the above was answering was not correct. MSE v2 scenery uses default FSX night lighting. Not 100% perfectly aligned in all cases, but still very accurate and does the job.

So if you have UTX night lighting it won't use that instead?

Gaiiden, thats pretty cool stuff, I'm interested in seeing how this project turns out. This would definitely make photoreal much more immersive.

The two biggest problems I see are that they're sometimes incomplete from the point of view of how v2 is now sold -  v1 Colorado only featured a portion of the state for example - and they're fairly sparse.

And, as I've said, there may be lurking issues that I haven't seen.  Everything looks fine so far, but I've not tested exhaustively by any means.  For now I would only say that if you had v1 its worth a try.

Yeah, even the objects on Megascenery Socal are, for the most part, fairly poorly placed.  But I've sort of trained myself not to look too closely.

I see. How easy is it to add buildings and other types of autogen on top of photo real scenery? Are there any tutorials on how to do this. I'd love to give this a try.

yes, easy, but tedious

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/wiki/index.php?title=Autogen_editing_with_Annotator

Use the tutorial link at the bottom, works well.

I think this is a great idea and initiative, if I had more states i would add some agn files also. Keep in mind that using autogen over placeing objects with instant scenery will give you denser coverage with less of a performance hit. Plus, if you place trees with IS you get ugly shadows due to the way FSX lighting is with transparencies, whereas if you place the same type of tree with the autogen annotator, you get no shadows

The most efficient way to get some trees and buildings around your airports in MSE is to make note of what autogen tree types you want  Here is a list that shows all default objects and autogen

http://lc0277.gratisim.fr/sceneobjects/

Once you have the trees selected that you want, load up any MSE bgl in the annotator, select the trees you want, zoom in and place them around any airport on the image (and buildings also if you are comfortable with the annotator, but trees are much easier), then save. Now start FS and add any buildings you want with instant scenery (make sure to check the box to not have the object suppress autogen) and there you go. Once you get used to this, you can add trees and default objects to all airports in a state in a day easy.

Hi Michael,

When I try to run Annotator it runs Annotator Configurator...I guess maybe it wants to create a config file?  That's as far as I've gotten it go to...I get permission errors.  I can't reduce security on my system so, if it's wanting me to turn off more security it would not be an option for me.

Gregg I don't know what to tell you on that, never had that issue.

Here is what the annotator looks like open on my system. This is an island i am working on. You can see the green areas on the map that each define a different tree types.
