Private Airfield

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Does anyone know of any scenery that I can get my hands on that is of a private airport. Preferable with a runway long enough to get a 737 in and out of. Looking for something on the west coast of the USA - I'm wanting a little sanctuary where I can fly my aircraft collection (mainly the 737, and assorted WW2 fighters and bombers!) Does anyone know of anything like that? The closest I've found that I like is a (very good!) reproduction of Kermit Weeks' Fantasy of Flight - But Florida is a bit too flat for my tastes, plus the 737 is pretty much a no go!

If not 100% close to what I'm looking for, I'll also take recommendations of small airports that don't have a huge amount of traffic that are fun to fly from.

Thanks,

James

You could always make your own, if you have the Deluxe\Gold version, which contains the SDKs. Make a new airport, place objects, make approaches, the whole world would become your palette.

I'm afraid my ability when it comes to making anything is overtaken by your average five year old! I'm always happy to provide technical assistance to anyone or provide background coding, but my creative cells never seem to have grown!

If you have Megascenery Socal, look at KCRQ in Carlsbad

PC=9700K@5Ghz+RTX2070  VR=HP Reverb|   Software = Windows 10 | Flight SIms = P3D, CAP2, DCS World, IL-2,  Aerofly FS2

An airfield that comes free with Orbx PNW is KHQM. Of the Orbx payware/freeware out there that probably has the longest runway. It would only be a little tight on ramp space for a 7-3. Never tried that before but it could be done.

Kyle

Both 'private airport' and 'small airports' don't sound like airports suitable for a 737...

Well if you can afford a BBJ you can probably build an airfield :)

The 737 is quite a capable aircraft, it can handle under 6000'.  It can handle KHQM fine.  Orange County KSNA has a 5700' main runway, and is serviced by 757s.

Also you have to remember back in the 70s, 737s, 727s, DC-9s...etc were the RJs and frequently operated out of smaller airports.  I remember hopping on a PSA (or United..can't quite remember...I was 4 years old at the time and only remember the stripes on the side of the plane LOL) 727 from Arcata KACV to San Francisco, then from SFO, a PSA MD-80 to Burbank back in the early 80s.

As for the poster's request, KHQM is a nice detailed free airport that might meet his needs.

If you are capable with AFCAD and some BGL editing tools, you can modify an existing airport to make it more of a 'home'.  I modified FTX Orcas Island to have a small house/hangar attached to the airport. Orcas is a nice airport, 2900' runway can comfortably handle larger warbirds/GA...ie P-51, larger GA twins..etc. And it has a GPS approach, which helps with the PNW region's frequent IFR weather. I haven't found many airports with house/hangar property that also have an instrument approach.

How would one go about 'building' an airport in FSX? Is it particularly difficult?

It depends on how much realism you want it to have. If you just use defualt buildings and an AFCAD, then it is pretty easy. Just get ADE and you're pretty much set.

If you want a PR background, custom buildings with good textures, eye-candy(come on, who doesn't love a bit of eye-candy) etc. the difficulty steps up a notch with each "extra" element you want to have.

I had a look at ADE - that I could master - however I'm also quite the 'eye candy' person, and as previously mentioned don't have the skills to make such a place!

I loved the looks of KHQM but alas I don't have PNW scenery so it doesn't work properly. Are there any others in that area? I like the look of North Eastern states too... I'm looking really for a new area to learn and fly around as I've done up to now about 95% of my simmed flying in Europe.

Also once I've found a decent scenery I like, how would one go about removing the amount of AI traffic that bases itself at the airport? I run MyTraffic 5.4 (I think) I'm not wanting to turn the traffic slider to 0 as when I go away from 'home' I'd like to have to fly with other aircraft hence the wanting to kick the AI out!

Thanks,

James W

Enquire to John Travolta, he uses his for a 707!
