August 11, 201312 yr That's what I thought they were doing. Listen to RiceySpicey. Aim for smoothness and ignore the framerate counter. If you dont you will go crazy like I almost did lol. I have an i5 ivy bridge, 16g ram and an at 7770 and my system runs sweet. I'm finally at the point where I dont have to tweak anything else. I have all the scenery from orbx, a couple from flytampa and aerosoft plus others. I also use Opus and my traffic and my framerate is consistently 25-30 At busy airports on the ground in the VC I get about 15-20 and thats smooth enough for an enjoyable session. Once I get up in the air the FR goes up. Turn your clouds down to low or normal because with AA they are a big hit. Autogen and scene complexity I have set to dense. Try those settings and experiment to see what is acceptable to fly with
August 11, 201312 yr Hi, Just wanted to put my 10 cents in. Anyone with a high end computer setup (ie i7 xxxx and 8Gb ram and a 600 series Nvidia card) should be able to run FSX and the PMDG NGX without stutters or choppy animations. I originally loaded FSX with Acceleration and had a few minor glitches so I changed it to FSX with SP1 & SP2 and no problems. There are some graphics card settings that make a difference in the quality of your graphics and can be set/adjusted with Nvidia Inspector. For those of you who are having problems with stuttering or choppy animations may I suggets you uninstall FSX COMPLETELY and clear out any files/folders that are associated with FSX. Do a clean install and follow Nick Needhams install process (can't remember the website - just google Nick Needham, and - http://#####.wordpress.com/fsx-software-and-hardware-guide/ ) and Nvidia Inspector settings. Don't worry about frame rates - it doesn't tell you anything - the purpose is to get smooth graphics. If you follow the guides and do a clean install you should get good smooth graphics. I've never checked my framerates and I have very smooth, crisp, clear non-shimmering graphics. My setup is basic. Intel i7 3770k @ 3.5Ghz Asus P8Z77 Mobo 8 Gb RAM Nvidia GTX 680 Nvidia GTX 650 SSD Hard drive WD Hard drive 40" HDTV as main monitor 19" Flat screen 2nd monitor O/S Windows 7 64 bit. All FSX settings maxed out and traffic at 50%. Screen Resolution in FSX as for 40" monitor - 1920x1080x32 FSX, PMDG, Airport Addons x 6, Active SKY 2012, REX, Ultimate Terrain, EZDOK, and FS Build. August 11, 201312 yr I didn't read all the thread so excuse me if its mentioned but you can overclock and you should. That will go a long way for sure! i5 2500k here clocked to 44x and man what a difference this move made ZORAN

Indeed. Just take a look at the description of the YouTube video linked to in post #5, quoted in full below for effect (with some dodgy links removed). That guy has used so many recording and post-processing tricks in order to prettify the video, that comparing it to the quality of a raw FSX recording is next to pointless. They're two completely different animals, that's for sure. Note also that his PC isn't all that great, proving that you can make stunning YouTube videos even when FSX performance on one's system is mediocre at best. August 11, 201312 yr Put it this way - I am clocked at 5.0ghz and even with this - getting above 30fps on the ground with REX, a HD airport, a PMDG plane and EMB is still really really rare. Clocking helps, but only so much. 18-30fps is your holygrail of stability and smoothness - dont worry about going any higher - you honestly wont be able to see the difference. All about the smoothness Elliot Westacott
August 11, 201312 yr You might want to check you also are running latest drivers for your motherboard. Also have you tried playing around with your bufferpools setting? Can work for some; rejectthreshold = xxx where xxx is a value that you'll need to test to find the best setting, eg. 524288 for 512KB, 262144 for 256KB, 131072 for 128KB, but can be any multiple of 1024. Start with 524288 and move downward until you find what works best ... When too low you'll get artifacts and you'll know the previous value is where you should leave it. Danny Hicks
August 11, 201312 yr I understand your frustrations - your system is more than capable of running the NGX well by the looks of it. Go to this file:%AppData%\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.cfg and search for a line under [Graphics] called HIGHMEMFIX=1 - if you do not see this line in there then you need to add it in straight away. See if this helps your issues. HIGHMEMFIX=1 will do absolutely nothing to FPS, it will only increase stability of FSX. Daniel, let me help you with this with some easy steps. One critical line in your fsx.CFG to unleash great FPS is: [bUFFERPOOLS] PoolSize=0 There is absolutely no point of adding particular values for PoolSize= when using such a balanced system as yours, therefore, 0 is the best option. For extra stability, make sure you also have HIGHMEMFIX=1 under [GRAPHICS] And for the record, the animations inside the NGX are indeed very choppy, it's completely normal and everybody has this. Even if I get 60 FPS - which I rarely get - the yoke, throttle, speed brake, rudder and trim look like they're moving at like 10 FPS. At the same time, the default planes are much much smoother with regard to this. In other words, there is nothing you can do about this. Let's hope PMDG will fix this in their 777 and SP2 for the NGX. If not, it's probably a sacrification they had to make in order to make the NGX as good as possible. If you are also referring to smoothness and framerates when looking outside the window, then the BUFFERPOOLS tweak should help a lot. With high settings and that system, you shouldn't be going under 30 FPS a lot. In rare cases only, it should drop to the low 20's, assuming you're not using AI traffic. Even with high framerates, FSX is not smooth at all, it will be full of microstuttering and it will all be a little choppy. Using a framerate limiter won't fix these issues at all. However, there might just be a really good solution for you, that was discovered around a year ago which takes FSX's performance to the next level. You will need to download NVIDIA Inspector, browse to the MS Flight Simulator X profile in the search bar, and set Vertical Sync to 1/2 refresh rate and click "Apply changes". Now limit FPS inside FSX to 30, and voila, 100% smoothness without any choppy movement whatsoever whenever 30 FPS is maintained. Please note that this will only work properly on 60 Hz monitors. There is a reason 1/2 refresh rate is being used because 30 FPS is a realistic aim for framerate. For 120 Hz monitors you can use 1/4 refresh rate which will have the same effect. But let's say you have a 72 Hz monitor and use 1/2 refresh rate, then you'll need 36 FPS at all times for this tweak to work. If FPS drops below that, you'll have these stutters again. Also please note that this will not fix any choppy animations in the NGX. Arjen Vandervelde
August 11, 201312 yr Also, keep in mind that flying online on VATSIM can be a complete FPS murder if you configure aircraft matching incorrectly. Marko Milivojević
August 11, 201312 yr Author Thanks for all the feedback guys, i do have my bufferpool set at "0", and my frame rate locked at 30. If everyone else has this same problem with the animations, then I feel alot better about it. right now NGX is the only addon I have installed, for testing purposes, and I'm getting 30fps anywhere im testing. I'm not so much worried about fps, just smoothness. One last issue though, NGX is giving me microstutters...how might I go about getting rid of them? Thanks again. Daniel.
