Did win7 updates break my FSX?

Featured Replies

For a long time I have had auto updates turned off. Yesterday for no very good reason I decided to install all updates (quite a few) lots of windows security stuff and one for the drivers of my graphics card Nvidia GTX880.

Following this FSX is a non starter, I get 'fatal error' message on the splash screen.

Now to complicate matters, as always,  I had also been doing a lot of config tweaking and had used Bojotes tweaker. I got to the point of deleting the config from FSX to allow it to build another one which I was then going to modify. However FSX would not rebuild it, instead it produced two separate configs, both incomplete.  So now close to reinstalling FSX but obviously not really lookig forward to this..

set system restore to a date before the event. Then hold your breath and x fingers it resets. I feel your pain though..

Ive tried that, FSX starts without the 'fatal error' message but just hangs on the splash screen. In task manager it shows as not responding.

Not much consolation, for future reference though. Set up your Windows update to ask before install, then choose to install the updates you want to install rather than just go for the whole nine yards.

I only install critical updates for the most part and alway install only the hardware drivers I choose myself.

Sorry I can't offer a solution,

Regards,

Rick Hobbs

I have all the updates installed and no problem with FSX.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with my config changes. However FSX should be able to rebuild its config file......but mine is not doing this, which must be the problem but I have no idea what would stop it doing so. I have tried an FSX repair install with no improvement.

interesting you say this, as I had EXACTLY the same issue only last week. After a socalled update, FSX just sat there loading and loading and loading! After several attempts I counted my losses and reinstalled from a backup. It still took the afternoon though. Very annoying.

Have you tried a system restore, assumimg you don't have a backup...?

Yep tried a system restore. I had a backup of the config but even using that still no good. I am confused why FSX will not rebuild its own config! weird that it builds two incomplete ones? Really not wanting to reinstall

did u install them before fsx?  OP installed them after.

always try to install the updates first, then install other stuff after.  All those security/redist updates usually end up hurting other programs.

The only Win7 udate that would do that is the video driver update. Download the latest driver from NV. Go into Control Panel and UNINSTALL the video driver. Reboot. Install new driver. Adjust NI settings.

Actually, you're probably right Dave. If I remember correctly the Win update was interrupted or something, can't exactly remember what went on, but I remember it didn't download/install correctly, so maybe the Win registry got corrupted somehow. But it was definitely the update that caused the problem, albeit a corrupted update, and not a GPU driver, as it gave me the option to install the driver which I declined.

I think that a fresh install is the only option now cos sure as hell if its not perfect and even if I get it working now something else will go wrong.

Oh bugger, its just all those forgotten things, the big stuff like payware AC is easy enough. But the one thing I cant remember is where to get that fix for reduciing the halo size for lights (as I use TH2GO)

Also I have a superb FREE Grunman Goose which is better than some payware...where was that from?

Oh well here we go

I have all the updates installed and no problem with FSX.

Me too!

And updates were installed after FSX

Gerry Howard

I think I'd try every avenue before relenting to a full reinstall. Have you tried another update since doing a system restore? Registry clean? Just throwing out a few ideas. I'm sure some guru will have an answer...
