This is the sort of thing xplane needs to advance the product, bring more users on board, and attract more third party development. Thanks for putting this together and looking forward to seeing more information soon.

Not what I would call a fudge but working with the platform. We are going to work with the default engine and real world weather, which works well and has plenty of options. I don't see a need to reinvent the wheel here.

Of course guys this is the add-on in alpha right now. When it is time for a release, we will not stumble and I understand any skepticism right now...

Will you be able to create different looking cloud formations, towering cumulus, cumulonimbus, cirrus, etc... Kind of like what REX offers ?

Clouds are procedurally drawn and completely 3d,  they are drawn into random shapes via the plugin, this is completely different than billboard textures so making a comparison like that is difficult.

Now with that said I am going to have quality settings built into the UI that can be adjusted to suit hardware and tastes......

Cumulunimbus thunderheads will be included in the package and show up during storms.  Here is an early look at that(notice the light maps):

Also depending on wind speed and direction the clouds will morph and stretch into a new formation.....

That looks great. Would you be able to provide a daytime, dusk, or dawn pic? Thanks.

Performance is actually pretty good so far, but we are sitting on top of the default cloud system.  I am using transparent PNG's to mask them.  This still creates a performance hit but once we can properly "kill" the default clouds we will see a huge gain.....

Awesome!! I'm sold already!!

Thank you for your hard work

Here is one you might enjoy......Keep in mind this is live in sim noty any edit in any way, shape, form, function, purpose, or gain.......The cerpuscular rays can be dialed down BTW.....

WOW!!

Those "God rays" are wild! Do they require HDR on?

No this is with HDR off.......;)

I gotta tell you I have been getting a bunch of valuable feedback from the community.  Changes to the UI are already being outlined because of it....

Well anyway here is another dawn pic...

How does it look like when we fly through one of those clouds? Could you make a video demonstrating maybe? Looks great!

Ah yes, Blender.  I remember working with that tool a bit.  But seriously, I wonder what a mountain scene would look like with X-Plane's water and lighting along with the crepuscular rays that are possible with Skymaxx.  I would really be curious to see how that would render.
