The importance of MUSIC in the sim

Just an update:

I got sidetracked at work today by seeing what I could accomplish with FSUIPC and Lua scripting.  16 lines of Lua script later (okay, plus maybe an hour or two of research) and I have the ability to start and stop iTunes based on the active frequency of Comm2. ^_^

A bit more research into the iTunes COM and there's a ton of flexibility there at my disposal: Playlists, track reporting, automatic volume control based on events within FSX, etc.

It never fails me as to what FSUIPC is truely capable of.

I'm not saying that running iTunes in the background is the way to go for everyone, but at least it seems to me to be pretty neat.  Plus this would be easy to do to also control iTunes on another networked pc.

Jim,

Don't forget us Niners! :P

Are talking about FS9?  In that case, the scripting that I've worked on may work, but it does rely on a registered copy of FSUIPC which I only have for FSX right now.  I'd imagine that FSUIPC in FS9 handles Lua scripts the same, but to be honest, I have no idea!

Once I get things working a bit smoother tonight with more functionality, I'll share my script and then anyone can play with it for themselves.

Jim,

I would venture to bet that the code is different for FSX than it is for FS 9...

Oh well... sounds like it's going to work like you want it to!

I wouldn't actually think that it's all that different - the offset that FSUIPC reads would be different for sure, but as long as FSUIPC for FS9 has Lua scripting capability, everything else would be the same.

I should note that somewhere today in my research I ran across a gauge for FS9 which plays music - looks like a CD player I think - but from what I read it doesn't work inside of FSX.  So perhaps for FS9 my efforts aren't as required as much anyways?

Also from my research, there's a few different music players for Windows that expose the functionality I need (COM) to access them from FSUIPC / Lua, so this wouldn't be tied just to iTunes.

The real world G1000 avionics unit has a full audio music suite, able to play long range / digital radio stations, and auxiliary fed music.

Keep in mind that aircraft can install optional XM Audio Panels as well, which of course can pull XM Satellite Weather, Radar, Radio, etc...  My good friend has them in his King Air B200 and Diamond DA42 and we use it all the time flying - it is amazing to have all the XM Radio Stations available to listen to at cruise.

You guys should try some progressive trance, or Guy J's 1000 words album. It's like that music was made for flying airliners.. at twilight.

I 2nd this.  Some progressive trance is amazing to listen to at cruise watching the sun go down.  Some of my favorites are:  Pryda - Vega; Eric Prydz - Pjanoo; Daft Punk - Tron Soundtrack.  Just like this video here - the music makes it so much better!

During long haul flights in my 747, 767, and MD-11, I like to plug in my headphones to my iPod and listen to either rap, trance, or rock, depending on what mood I'm in. It seems realistic enough to listen to your iPod during those boring hours at cruise altitude over the ocean.

Although in my 747, the spectacular sound of over 200,000 pounds of thrust is better to my ears than any music playlist.

Yep I'll listen to country, some nightcore, certain pop songs from 09 (brings me back to sr year of high school), and sometimes talkshows if they have anything interesting going on. Also Hans Zimmer movie soundtracks are good as well.

A<380 love at first flight

change of direction, but I just tried out the blue sky radio yesterday, flying a short dusk time leg from ENBR to ENHD and back in the js4100. Now to add to the immersion, I tuned in to ENGM app on LiveATC... I'm telling you guys I was SUCKED into my sim! That beautifull sunset over FSWC water, AS2012 sky textures and clouds, FTX global beautiful Norwegian textures, combined with that music (didn't know the artist, but fitted right in there) and a friendly women ATC on ENGM app - I was lost!Mas

Did you tune into the atc through blue sky radio addon?

No I simply used liveatc.net, and tuned in to ENGM_app.

I run everything but FSX on a remote PC (FSinn, IVAP, AS2012, VA software and such), and I simply play Blue Sky Radio in the browser of my remote PC, and tune into LiveATC on another browser. All sounds from my remote PC are re-directed to my headphones, which I also use to talk with FSinn and FS2Crew - I've attached a second microphone on the headset. I didn't like the Wee Beest app, as the sound was directed through my speakers...

I did a flight last again - lucky me, that just as I captured the ILS for ENAL, sailing along the mountain ridges over the water, and in sunset mind you, Pink Floyd tuned on with Is There Anybody Out There - awesome! Just having that ATC chatter in the background, and with accents that correspond to the contry I'm flying in, really adds to the immersion!

Ah okay, i'm trying to find a way to play live atc through my headphones without running a processor heavy program in the background as i'm currently on the one PC.

Wouldn't your browser do that, or does that go through the speakers as well?

It will, but i use Chrome and it's processor heavy on an already limited capability laptop ;)

Maybe VLC player is lighter on processor.

Whenever I fly nap of the Earth with the A2A Mustang I can't help but turn on Free Bird. It just fits so well haha.

I see - don't know about vlc - worth a shot I guess!
