The importance of MUSIC in the sim

Featured Replies

You guys should try some progressive trance, or Guy J's 1000 words album. It's like that music was made for flying airliners.. at twilight.

Agreed with the Lancaster pilot above, when you have Merlin or Allison V-1710 music going on, you don't need any other tunes playing. B)   That being said, when flying something not powered by one of those beautiful sounding engines, I usually have winamp playing MP3s, playlist, or radio stream in the background.  Music of choice for me is the Blues, Funk, Soul, old rock like Pink Floyd, Doors, CCR...etc....

Flying a DC-3 (or in my case the excellent Uiver DC-2 that I fly), while listening to some classic Sinatra, Dean Martin, or Matt Monro is a very special experience.

New Yoooooorkkkkk...New Yooooooooooooooooork.

Just imagining flying a DC3 into NY right now with the Manhattan Skyline, with Sinatra playing through the headset.

I remember Bill Lyons old airplanes doing something like this.  Flying one of his old biplanes you could turn on the radio that would play music and news clips from the 20s.  Combined the sound of the old chugging engine and wind, it was actually very charming.  I miss Bill as am sure many do.  He really helped to put the FUN in FS back in the day.

Cheers

It might be worth getting a cable with a 3.5" jack on both ends, plugging your iPod into your PC's microphone jack, and tuning loopback sound on. That way you would only need the one pair of headphones.

That's what I use because it allows not only independent audio control but also the ability to change tracks without having to deal with yet another thing running on my PC.

Great idea, thanks! Alt+tabbing out of the sim to change tracks is a bit jarring and does take away from the immersion.

There are also Spotify Remote apps for Android and iOS, so you can control Spotify on your PC using your phone or tablet.

I like it that you can turn the radio on or off using Com2

Another one that runs through COM2 - http://www.easternhopswebradio.com/addons/tunetracker.rar

Thanks! ... I installed this one too and like it a lot.   In a way I prefer it to Wee Tune Beastie, because this one you just launch once (before starting FSX) and then start FSX, tune yuo're ready and you've got music.   With Wee Tune Beastie, you have to launch it,. start FSX, and then you must come back out, to the desktop to press a 'connect' button, which is a little annoying.

so yeah, like this Eastern Hops Player!   Love the way the volume works too (eg...Tune 135.30 for 30% volume, 135.90 for 90% etc).  Cool!

A good idea. I enjoy nostalgic aircraft, and the 40's to 60's music works well. Besides, I do listen to the Sinatra channel on Cirus/XM.....off & on.

Interesting stuff - I think there needs to be an application that would be just like the tunetracker / eastern hops player, except that it would allow you to tune it to a web station of your choice.

If such a thing doesn't exist, perhaps I might have to look into it...

Yes I think you're right Jimmy.   I think we've stumbled across a need that a lot of flight simmers would be interested in.  Would be great if someone could capitalize on that, and fill the need.

I'm thinking:-

  • Gauge based, with a config utility to add the gauge to all installed aircraft.
  • Gauge is a pop up 2D panel.
  • Gauge includes Presets for pre-selected internet radio channels, plus also a 'custom' way of setting one's own preference. (So maybe a cfg file that lists the channels that the gauge will read, and the user can change / add to them, with their own choices.
  • Volume control.
  • Must be light on CPU, and must for example, not use Win Media Player (don't think it would anyway, for internet radio).
  • Perhaps even an additional function to play WAV or MP3 files stored on the users HD, all from the same gauge, and all interchangeable with the radio station selection.

So there you go, whoever is able to take up the challenge, off you go!

Personally, I would pay up to about $30 for the above.

Pandora and TuneInRadioPro work all right, but sometimes TuneIn won't play some Local stations because of contractual obligations, and picks another station with the same format... usually one I don't want to listen to!

Jimmy, you and Dave (Q400) have hit on a great idea! I've always thought it would be neat to have a "FS Radio Station" like BlueSky Radio, but with a couple more listening options and music formats ala XM or Sirius Radio. I picture something like a college radio station, with FS related news and such, and different shows with different 'DJ's".

Now... would you want to listen to 'canned' music (a pre-recorded 'show' with selected tracks), or something live? Something where you could Request a particular track, perhaps like EasternHops?

Dave -- Gauge wise, almost like the old 'CD car stereo' Bill Lyons used to put in some of his models? Then, with some sort of interface to play Internet Radio, or a selected .wav or MP3 file, right?

Hmmm... maybe a little chat with Fr. Bill (n4gix) or Don (fxsttcb) might be in order about the Gauge...

Already looking into it...  ^_^

These are my thoughts, at least for a simple freeware version:

- A config file would list X number of settable COM frequencies that can be tuned in the sim.

- Each frequency could be set to a different internet radio station and / or playlist of mp3's.

- I really like using the decimals of the COM frequency to set volume, I'd like to copy that.

- Background program that would start / stop playback dependent on if one of the matching frequencies is tuned in the sim.

I realize that's not really all that you guys were thinking of, but keeping it simple means that 1) it has as minimal of an impact on performance as possible, and 2) that it's realistic for me to possibly try and write it.

Several years ago I wrote a command line based music player, so I might even have some old code to dust off.

change of direction, but I just tried out the blue sky radio yesterday, flying a short dusk time leg from ENBR to ENHD and back in the js4100. Now to add to the immersion, I tuned in to ENGM app on LiveATC... I'm telling you guys I was SUCKED into my sim! That beautifull sunset over FSWC water, AS2012 sky textures and clouds, FTX global beautiful Norwegian textures, combined with that music (didn't know the artist, but fitted right in there) and a friendly women ATC on ENGM app - I was lost!
